New Preface

Human knowledge and time constantly progress. From 2004 until now, the traditional character edition of this book has been 5 years in the making. During this time, I have been invited to give close to a hundred lectures at medical organizations, symposiums and church groups. In addition, there have been more and more diagnoses and treatment of cancer as well as handling patients with various kinds of complicated illnesses. All of these challenges continually renew and deepen my thirst for knowledge and cause me to feel there is an essential need to take these new insights and incorporate them into my book for all to share.

In 2007, when the simplified edition was published by

China Science and Technology Publishing House, I made many revisions and supplements which now contribute to form a strong foundation for this revised traditional character edition.

Following the feedback of readers, this edition has been adjusted to provide new categorical structure allowing for enhanced readability.

In 2003, this book was published by San Francisco’s oldest Chinese newspaper, Jin Shan Ri Bao. It was printed in a series of 206 installments. Jin Shan Ri Bao later merged with Hong Kong’s Xing Dao Ri Bao, and I will always be grateful to them for launching this book.

I am very moved, moved that after reading this book, so many American company executives as well as people from many societies and all walks of life, bought several dozen to several hundred copies of the book to give to personnel, family and friends. I am moved that many Chinese mainland readers told me excitedly how much this book has helped them personally or helped their family and friends to slow down the progression of cancer, even to the point of eliminating the suffering caused by cancer. I am moved by letters and emails from readers throughout the world brimming with enthusiasm and encouragement who all offer excellent suggestions.

I am even more moved that on August 13 of this year, Linda G. Wang, after diligently working on translation for 3 years, completed the English edition. She is an American from New York with a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in Oriental Languages. She formerly studied Chinese in Taiwan, married a Chinese from Hubei, and benefited from many years of invaluable tutorials from her erudite father-in-law. She delved into the depths and complexities of this book, being compensated only by a belief that this book fulfills a need to help the English reading population achieve good health. This translation will now facilitate the sharing of rich and profound knowledge of Chinese medicine with people everywhere.

The original title of this book was One Hundred Chats on Chinese Medicine Fighting Cancer. With the completion of the English translation, Linda translated the title as A Second Chance: Approaching Cancer Through Chinese Medicine. This title captures the essence of the book’s content and therefore I have decided to use it as the new title of the Chinese second edition.

I continue to wholeheartedly welcome feedback from readers and will revise this book as I continue to strive to reach excellence.
