Support what is Correct, Fight Cancer with Four great Methods

Supplement Qi and Yin to Fight Cancer

In the last chapter, we discussed Conso-#1 therapy method with a series of prescriptions from the eight major groupings of herbal medicine principles which come from the fourth method; the question of resolving toxins in the fight against cancer. Previously, we have noted the eight major cancer treatments; regulate qi, quicken the blood, disinhibit water, resolve toxins by dispelling illness, supplement qi, supplement yin, supplement blood, supplement yang. These are the most effective methods methods and now we will continue on to talk about how supplement qi, supplement yin work.

Number Five: Supplementing qi to Fight Cancer

When vacuous qi occurs in the body, then fatigue and weakness can occur, the four limbs show lassitude, the sound of the patient’s voice is weak and feeble, small amounts of food are eaten with indigestion, movement causes panting, the spirit is withered and unfocussed and other phenomena occur which are referred to in Chinese medicine as vacuous qi. In this condition, the body’s functions show low response, in other words, resistance power and immune power is insufficient. Because of this, supplementing qi is a goal in fighting cancer. It increases body functions, allowing it to have the strength to lift a fist to strike its enemy.

Ginseng root; grass based plant, primarily produced in Korea and China’s Jilin region. Grown in the wild it is also called ‘mountain root’, the cultivated kind is also called ‘round root’. Fresh ginseng after being washed clean and dried is called ‘fresh-dried root’. After processed with steam and then dried, it is called ‘red root’. Roasted and steeped in sugar and then dried, it is called ‘sugar root’ or ‘white root’. After going through processing the small rootlets are called ‘root whiskers’. The flavor is sweet, slightly bitter, with fresh dried root and sugar root both slightly warm, red root slightly hot, belonging to the heart, lung, spleen channel. It is effective at greatly supplementing the original qi, securing prolapse, producing fluids, boosting mentality and calming the spirit. In general, when beginning supplementation, root whiskers, sugar root or fresh-dried root can be used to regulate dosage, so as to not induce ‘rise of fire’. Red root, because it veers toward heat, is used for drastic supplementation and quick rescue to return yang. Ginseng contains fifteen kinds of saponin, with a saponin content always about 5%, also containing many kinds of carbohydrates, vitamins and volatile oil, etc. Experiments show that ginseng’s pharmacological activity emerges with dual functions often because an organism’s functional conditions are not the same, it. For example, on the hearts of many kinds of animals, ginseng first has an stimulating effect, then an inhibiting effect, emerging with a small amount of excitation and large amount of inhibition. In terms of the brain nerves in the central core, both excitation and inhibition processes have an increased function. Ginseng clearly shows; antibody restraint, anti-fatigue, lowering of blood sugar, promoting of biosynthesis of RNA and DNA, regulating cholesterol metabolism, promoting hematopoietic system function, reducing radiation influence on the hematopoietic system, increasing the immune function, increasing sex gland function, and is both antianaphylactic as well as antidiuretic. As for the oncoma aspect, ginseng saponin in mice has an S180’s inhibiting ratio which is relatively high, from 48% to 60%. Ginseng’s many sugars has a humoral immunity stimulating effect on normal mice and those carrying tumor cells. Ginseng’s enol types and volatile oils, etc. are also proven to have anti-cancer function. The dosage used ranges from 3-6 grams.

Codonopsis root; grass based plant, sweet flavor, calm nature, belongs to the spleen and lung channel, is effective at supplementing the center boosting qi, nourishing blood and producing fluid. In terms of function, Codonopsis root is similar to ginseng, however its strength is considerably less potent. However in general, when taking price into consideration from pharmaceutical sources, its enriching and supplementing nature can also reach a satisfactory outcome.

In addition, there is a kind of plant called Ming Dang Shen, with a sweet flavor, slightly bitter, a slightly cold nature, belonging to the lung and spleen channel which is effective at moistening the lungs and transforming phlegm, nourishing yin and the stomach. However, its function is completely different from that of codonopsis root, and should not be mistaken as the same product.

Codonopsis root contains saponin, small quantities of alkaloids, carbohydrates, vitamins B1 and B2, many kinds of trace elements, amino acids, etc. Experiments show that it has an inhibiting effect on the nervous system, is able to strengthen an organism’s resistance power, causing an increase in rabbit’s red blood cells and hemoglobin, regulating gastro-intestinal movement. It is anti-ulcer, inhibiting stomach acid secretions, lowering stomach protease, and is able to have an increased effect on white blood cells which have decreased due to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Dosage used is 10-30 grams.

Pseudostellaria; grass based plant, also called Haier Shen. It’s has a sweet flavor, slightly bitter, calm nature, belongs to the spleen and lung channel, is effective at supplementing qi and yin. Pseudostellaria has some combined effect with ginseng’s supplementation of qi and American ginseng’s supplementation of yin, however its strength is very light. It is most appropriate for those with a vacuous qi, vacuous yin constitution, especially for middle aged and older people. It contains many carbohydrates, many kinds of amino acids, trace elements, etc. Dosage used is 10-30 grams.

Milk-vetch root; grass based plant, sweet flavor, slightly damp nature, belongs to the spleen and lung channel, effective when its nectar is heated it can supplement qi and raise yang, boosts wei gu biao, used raw for disinhibiting water and dispersing swelling, drawing out sores and is myogenic. It contains types of glycosides, many carbohydrates, amino acid, trace elements, etc. Experiments show that is able to increase and strengthen immune function, disinhibit urine, has an anti-aging effect, lowers blood pressure, quickens healing from radiation induced organism damage, promotes regeneration of DNA synthesis, etc. Dosage used is 10-60 grams.

Other commonly used herbs for supplementing qi are; atractylodes [white] rhizome, Chinese yam, jujube, Siberian Solomon Seal rhizome, barley malt sugar, etc.

Number Six: Supplementing yin to fight cancer;

Since we are talking about supplementing yin, we need to understand what yin vacuity means. Please re-read chapter 41 where we explicated that yin vacuity means the body constitution has a water component deficiency and a fluid deficiency. With symptoms, yin vacuity primarily has the special characteristics of ‘dryness’, ‘heat’, and ‘perspiration’. As for dryness, there are three types; mouth dryness, stool dryness and skin dryness. As for heat, there is vexing heat in the five hearts, tidal heat, cheek redness. As for perspiration, there is night sweat. From the appearance of the tongue, vacuous yin manifests as a tongue shape that is thin, small and red. The tongue fur is very sparse and dry or there isn’t any at all. In the process of a developing cancer, especially during chemotherapy, yin vacuity is commonly seen.

American ginseng root; grass based plant, primarily produced in the United States, Canada and France. On the Chinese Mainland, it is generally referred to as American ginseng root, however American Chinese as well as other overseas Chinese oftentimes call it Hua Qi Shen. Its flavor is sweet, slightly bitter, a cold nature, [please note that ginseng’s properties are partial to damp heat]. It is effective at nourishing yin, clearing fire, producing fluids, supplementing qi. Comparing its similarities with ginseng root, ginseng root can supplement qi and nourish yin, American ginseng root can nourish yin and supplement qi, their particular emphasis is different. The same as ginseng root, American ginseng root also contains many kinds of saponin and small amounts of volatile oil, tree resin, starch, carbohydrates, amino acids, inorganic elements, etc. Experiments show the saponins it contains produces an inhibiting effect on the central nervous system, has anti-oxygen deficit effect, is anti-fatigue, anti-tumor, anti-stress, anti-arrhythmia, anti-myocardial ishemia, anti-myocardium oxidation. It increases cardiac contractility, stops bleeding and is an anti-diuretic, etc. Dosage used is 3-6 grams.

Adenophora root; grass based plant, divided into southern and northern adenophora root. The northern adenophora root is primarily produced in China’s northern regions, the southern adenophora root is primarily produced in China’s southern region. With different areas of production, the functions of the two are also not the same. The northern adenophora root has a sweet flavor, slightly bitter, slightly cold nature, belongs to the lung and stomach channel. The southern adenophora root has a sweet flavor, a cold nature, and also belongs to the lung and stomach channel. The northern adenophora root is effective at nourishing yin and clearing the lungs, boosting the stomach in production of fluid. The southern adenophora root nourishes yin and clears the lungs, transforms phlegm and boosts qi. The northern adenophora root contains alkaloids, volatile oil, starch, etc. Experiments clearly show that it lowers body temperature and is effective as an analgesic, lowers degrees of concentration of the heart beat, strengthens the heart’s contractibility, since high concentration can inhibit the heart-beat, etc. The southern adenophora root contains saponin, alkaloids, flavones, has an emolliating character, etc. Experiments show it dispels phlegm, strengthens the heart and has an antifungal effect, etc. Dosage used averages 10-15 grams.

Lily bulb; grass based plant, has a sweet flavor, slightly cold nature, belongs to the lung and heart channel, is effective using its nectar warmed for nourishing yin and moistening the lungs. Its primary function is to stop coughing and used raw, it clears the heart and calms the spirit. It contains colchicine and many other kinds of alkaloids and starches, protein and fats, etc. Experiments show that the lily bulb decocted in ammonia water induced an effective cough suppressant on young mice, for histamines induced antagonistic effect on asthma, moreover had an enduring hypoxia effect. Dosage used is 10-30 grams.

Ophiopogon tuber/ asparagus tuber; these are also distinguished by the names; Mai Men Dong and Tian Men Dong, respectively. Oftentimes, they are used together to strengthen efficacy. Both are grass based plants. Ophiopogon tuber has a sweet flavor, slightly bitter, slightly cold nature, belongs to the heart, lung and stomach channel, is effective at nourishing yin, moistening the lungs, boosting the stomach’s production of fluids, clearing the heart and eliminating irritability. Asparagus tuber has a sweet flavor, slightly bitter, cold nature, belongs to the lung and stomach channel, is effective at nourishing Yin and moistening dryness, producing fluid and clearing fire. Ophiopogon tuber contains liu ti saponin, B-gu liu chun, amino acids, many kinds of glucose, pu tao tang dai, etc. Experimental research shows that it is able to increase and strengthen mononuclear-macrophage system’s phagocytic power, elevating peripheral white blood cells, increase immune capability; moreover able to strengthen the pituitary gland and adrenocortical system functions, raising an organism’s adaptability, anti-arrhythmia, and expanding peripheral blood vessels and lowering blood sugar. Injections of ophiopogon tuber fluid in young mice clearly raises tolerance for oxygen deficiency. Experiments on the external body show effective inhibition of many kinds of bacteria, etc. Asparagus tuber contains asparagus tuber elements, phlegm, B-gu liu chun, 5-methoxymethylfural, and many kinds of amino acids. Experiments show that it has a definitive dehydrogenase effect for patients suffering from acute lymphatic leukemia, chronic granulocytic leukemia, acute monocytic leukemia. It also has anti-tumor activity and has an inhibiting effect on many kinds of bacterium. Dosage used averages 10-15 grams.

Dendrobium; grass based plant. Dendrobium has many types, among them, the strongest and most effective is called ‘Golden Clasp Dendrobium’, which compared to most other dendrobium is much more costly. It’s flavor is sweet, slightly cold nature, belongs to the stomach and kidney channel, is effective at nourishing yin, boosting the stomach, clearing heat and producing fluids. It contains; dendrobine, dendramine, nobilonine dendroxine, dendrine, phlegm, starch, etc. Experiments show that dendrobine has a definitive analgesic and fever abatement effect. Decoction taken internally is able to promote stomach fluid secretions, aid digestion, moreover it is able to strengthen metabolism, and is anti-aging, etc. The dosage used is 10-15 grams.

Other Chinese herbs which are often used to supplement yin include; reed rhizome, anemarrhena, ningpo figwort root, Solomon’s seal rhizome, trichosanthes root, fresh-water turtle shell.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to obtain more information, please continue on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Vacuous Blood: Supplementing Blood to Fight Cancer

Vacuous Yang: Supplementing Yang to Fight Cancer

In the last chapter, we continued a discussion of conso-therapy using the anti-cancer method of the first consolidation. Conso-therapy method uses Conso-#1 in addressing the ongoing question of supplementing qi and supplementing yin. Now we will focus on the question of analyzing the supplementation of blood and yang. After concluding analysis of Conso-#1, we will move on to Conso-#2.

Number Seven: Supplementing blood to fight Cancer:

Qi is the body’s moving force, blood is its material foundation. Therefore, Chinese medicine attaches great importance to qi and blood. If blood is vacuous, it can emerge with a whole set of nutritional deficiencies. What color is blood? Everyone knows it is red. In that case, what kind of appearance does vacuous blood have? Naturally, the red color is insufficient, therefore as we discussed earlier, vacuous blood has the distinctive feature of ‘white appearance’. White facial color, often called ‘bloodless face,’ lips that have also turned white, eyes appear white, as well as white fingernails, hair, skin, and light colored menses for women etc. In the course of cancer chemotherapy, vacuous blood often occurs and speaking from clinical experience, oftentimes there are insufficient blood cells including; red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, blood platelets, etc. Because of this, supplementing the blood is a key link in fighting cancer.

1. Chinese angelica root: grass based plant, has a sweet flavor, belongs to the liver, heart, spleen channel. It is effective used raw for supplementing the blood and vitality, moistening the intestines and promoting the bowels. Stir-fried in wine, it quickens the blood and disperses swelling, regulates the channels and stops pain. In addition, for blood supplementation, the body of the Chinese angelica root is used for quickening the blood, and the tail of the Chinese angelica root is used for supplementing and quickening blood. When both the body of the herb and the tail are used together, this is referred to as the whole Chinese angelica root. It contains volatile oil and water soluble matter. The volatile oil primarily contains ligustilide and butyliden phthalide. The water soluble material contains; ferulic acid, Chinese angelica root polysaccharide, angelicone, folic acid, biotin, etc. Experiments show that Chinese angelica root polysaccharide, had an inhibiting effect of up to 39% on mice with transplanted tumors. Aside from this, it also strengthens immune function, increases an organism’s blood creating function, promotes splenic lymph node cell proliferation, promotes phagocyte cell function, promotes liver cell regeneration, anti-hemolysis, anti-allergic reaction, anti-radiation damage. For the smooth muscle of the uterus, has the dual regulatory function of stimulation and inhibition. Dosage used is 5-15 grams.

2. Rehmannia: Grass based plant, includes both varieties; raw and cooked rehmannia. The raw rehmannia passes through a process mixed with yellow wine and steamed until inside and outside turn black and into an oily lubricant, or it is directly steamed until it becomes a black lubricant, and then it has turned into cooked rehmannia called Shu Di. However, the two function quite differently. When the body exhibits blood-heat or is losing blood, the raw rehmannia is used to clear heat and cool the blood. When the body has vacuous blood, the cooked rehmannia is used to supplement the blood. Therefore, we will focus on cooked rehmannia. Cooked rehmannia has a sweet flavor, a slightly warm nature, belongs to the liver, kidney channel and is effective at supplementing blood and enriching yin, boosting the kidney, enriching marrow. It contains rehmannin, mannitol, vitamin A, carbohydrates, amino acids, etc. Experiments show it stimulates bone marrow to increase red blood cells, hemoglobin, elevate blood platelets, moreover it can lower blood sugar, increase immune function, has anti-radiation damage effect, is calming and sleep inducing, etc. Six flavor

rehmannia soup caused the decline of squamous epithelial cell carcinoma of the stomach in mice induced with experimental carcinogenic chemicals. Moreover, it was able to extend the survival time of the mice carrying tumors.

3. Fleeceflower root: Grass based plant. According to ancient records, long ago there was an old person surnamed He, and although his age surpassed one hundred, his hearing was sharp and his step was sturdy. Especially strange was his head full of thick black hair. Later on, it was explained that originally he often ingested a kind of medicinal plant. Later on, that type of plant was named He Shou Wu. Up to present times, it is an important type of Chinese medicine and is still used as treatment for white hair, prevention of illness and longevity. Fleeceflower root has different functions depending on its manufacturing method. Raw fleeceflower root has a sweet flavor, bitter, a calm nature, and belongs to the heart, liver and large intestine channel. It is mixed evenly with fermented black beans, steamed until inside and outside are equally brown and then sun dried into processed fleeceflower. Whether or not it is raw or processed, its efficacy will be vastly different. Raw fleeceflower root moistens the intestines, promotes bowel movement, resolves toxins and stops malaria. Only processed fleeceflower root supplements and boosts essence and blood, secures the kidney and blackens the beard. Fleeceflower root contains anthraquinone derivative, primarily consisting of chrysophanol, rheum emodin, and it also has chrysophanic acid, physcion, chrysophanol anthrone, etc. Experiments show that fleeceflower root can increase and strengthen cell immunity and inhibits humoral immune function, is anti-aging, anti-oxidant, produces blood, lowers blood lipids, is anti-arteriosclerosis, and also inhibits monoamine oxidase activity, etc. Raw fleecflower root after passing through refinement process has an increased sugar content, and in combination with anthraquinone derivative its content decreases, free anthraquinone derivative content clearly increases, therefore a purgative effect no longer occurs.

Other Chinese herbs often used for supplementation of blood include: Ass-hide glue, flesh of longan fruit, white peony root, mulberry fruit-spike, human placenta, etc.

Number Eight: Supplementing yang to fight Cancer:

Qi is the body’s functional motility and yang is the source of motility. Just as the myriad things grow, naturally they must rely on their own functional qi, but if there is no sunlight radiating, then there is no way to produce strong functionality. Because of this, yang is the fire tinder, fire torch and fire flames. If yang is weak, all under heaven and earth will be an expanse of cold. If you think about where we live in the San Francisco Bay Area, when evening arrives doesn’t it turn very cold? Everywhere is the same with some degree of variation. In that case, if the body has yang vacuity, it is exactly like the phenomenon of an expanse of cold. We previously discussed the phenomena of cold hands and feet, chilled body, or a part of the body feeling cold or chilled. As for cancer in its late stages, the body’s functionality has already been ruined to the utmost degree by cancer cells and it suffers a pervasive cold, therefore it is critical to make a major supplementation of yang as an important strategy in the saving of life.

Dried ginger rhizome; grass based plant. Fresh ginger which is sun dried or baked dry becomes dried ginger. Let’s compare the difference between the two. Fresh ginger has an acrid flavor, a warm nature whereas dried ginger has an acrid flavor and a hot nature. Fresh ginger belongs to the lung, spleen, stomach channel whereas dried ginger belongs to the spleen, stomach, heart and lung channel. Fresh ginger is effective at resolving effusive exterior perspiration, warming the center, stopping vomiting, warming the lungs and stopping coughing. As for dried ginger, it warms the center and dissipates cold, returns yang, frees the vessels, warms the lungs and transforms rheum. Fresh ginger is primarily used to treat cold and wind flu, stomach cold, vomiting, moreover it can resolve pinellia tuberifera poisoning, arisaema consanguineum poisoning and seafood poisoning. Dried ginger is primarily used for cold and pain in the gastric cavity and abdomen, cold rheum coughing and panting, and is especially used for rescuing the return of yang. For more information on raw ginger, please refer back to chapter 61. Here I’d like to point out that when yang qi is severely vacuous, most important is to select dried ginger as a warm supplementation. Dried ginger chiefly contains volatile oil, and the main components in the oil are: Zingiberene, zingiberol, phellandrene, campene, citric acid, linalool, gingerol, etc. Experiments show that dried ginger is effective at calming vomiting, as a sedative, as an analgesic, dispelling wind and fortifying the stomach, stopping coughing, etc. Ginger’s alcohol extract liquid directly excites the heart and blood vessel movement in the core, etc. Dosage used is 3-10 grams.

Cinnamon bark: Arbor plant, tree bark of cinnamon, sometimes also referred to as cortex cinnamonmi. Its flavor is acrid and sweet. Its nature is hot and it belongs to the spleen, kidney, heart, liver channel. It is effective at supplementing fire to assist yang, dispersing cold and stopping pain, warming the channels and opening the vessels. In the case of a long illness, both qi and blood are insufficient, and in the supplementation of qi and boosting of blood, it is appropriate to add cinnamon which can spur on the growth of qi and blood. It contains volatile oil called cinnamon oil or cinnamic oil. The primary ingredients in the oil are cinnamic aldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, phenylpropyl acetate, etc. It also contains tannin, phlegm, etc. Experiments show that cinnamon can; expand blood vessels, promote blood circulation, promote coronary and brain blood volume, cause a reduction in blood vessel resistance, is an analgesic, a sedative, resolves heat, is anti-convulsive. It promotes gastro-intestinal movement, promotes digestive juice secretions, expels gastro-intestinal tract accumulated qi, moderately resolves gastro-intestinal spasm pain, etc. Toward many kinds of fungi it has a definitive inhibiting effect. Dosage used is 2-5 grams. It is appropriate for use in posteroinferior positions. It can be ground fine and infused in water, with each dose approximately 1-2 grams.

Chinese wolfberry fruit; shrub plant. The Chinese wolfberry is a mature fruit, with its most famouc production from China’s Ningxia region. Chinese folklore has a proverb: ‘When leaving home a thousand li, don’t eat wolfberry fruit.’ This is a warning to young men that when they go out traveling far away, they shouldn’t eat wolfberry fruit to avoid causing kidney yang to become excessively effulgent and sexual function to become hyperactive. Wolfberry fruit also has another special feature, it follows yang as a supplementary medicine, further enhancing yang, it follows yin as a supplementary medicine, further enhancing yin. It exhibits effective regulation in both directions, therefore some Chinese medicine books classify it as belonging to yang supplementary medicine and others classify it as belonging to yin supplementary medicine. Wolfberry fruit has a sweet flavor, calm nature, belongs to the liver, kidney channel. It is effective at regulating and supplementing liver and kidney, boosting essence and brightening the eyes. It contains betaine, polysaccharide, coarse fat, coarse albumen, thiamine, riboflavin, carotene, ascorbic acid, nicotinic acid and small quantities of elementary calcium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, etc. Experiments show that wolfberry fruit has an anti-aging effect, anti-mutation, anti-tumor, protects the liver, lowers blood sugar, elevates peripheral white blood cells, increases mononuclear macrophage system’s phagocytic capability, increases cell and humoral immunity, promotes function of creating blood, etc. Dosage used is 6-15 grams.

Cordyceps; is a kind a fungus from ergot bacterium. In winter, an insect larva parasite is based in its body, and in early summer when it digs out of the earth, it is termed; ‘winter insect, summer grass’, abbreviated as winter insect grass. It is processed by sun drying or low warmth drying to be used as medicine. It’s flavor is sweet, nature is calm, and it belongs to the lung, kidney channel. It is effective at boosting the kidney, strengthening yang, supplementing the lungs and stabilizing breathing difficulties, stopping bleeding and transforming phlegm. Chinese folk medicine often uses it as a food therapy cooked with chicken, duck, beef, pork or other meats as medicine or cooked separately as a medicine. Appropriate amounts of longan or Chinese wolfberry fruit can be added, etc. Cordyceps contains coarse albumen. Its hydrolyzate comes in the form of; glutamic acid, proline, histidine, alanine, phenylalanine, cordycepic acid, mannitol, many kinds of trace elements. Experiments show that it is anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-radiation, lowers blood pressure, improves renal function, elevates cell immunity, improves myocardial ischemia, reduces heart rate, dispels phlegm, calms panting, etc. Dosage used is 5-10 grams.

Other Chinese herbs used for supplementation of yang are; eucommia bark, black cardamon, psoralea, fleshy stem of broomrape, Chinese dodder seeds, Chinese leek seeds, walnut nut, etc.

Dear Reader, to go one step further, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Conso-#2, Health Recovery Soup

Strict Observance to the Eight Basic Prescriptions

In the last chapter, we concluded our discussion of conso-therapy of anti-cancer Conso-#1, including its eight main medical prescription principles. This chapter focuses on Conso-#2.

Conso-#2: Conso-health recovery soup method.

Some readers may think it strange that since there is the Conso-#1 therapy method, why do you still need to coordinate its usage with a conso-health recovery soup therapy and other therapies. This is because cancer is an extremely complex and difficult problem. According to current science and technology standards, using one kind of therapy, or treating it from only one perspective, oftentimes lead to results which are off target, since a single force is not enough. In response to this, my research has expanded a therapy method which is not based on a single prescription. This approach threads together the essence Chinese medicine into a therapy of synthesis.

We know that Western medicine is predominantly made up of chemical components, therefore using a small quantity is sufficient. Chinese medicine uses a method of selection and purification. In comparing the original Chinese medicine to medicine after purification, the ratio is approximately 5:1. Let’s take a capsule as an example. If you think about it, one capsule contains at most about a half gram to a whole gram; Chinese medicine oftentimes makes a complex prescription. If a prescription has ten types of herbs, then figuring according to the one gram per capsule, each kind of medicine can only occupy one tenth, which is 0.1 gram, which was originally 0.5 gram of the raw herb. One gram of processed medicine was originally five grams of original, raw herb. In that case, taking three capsules is comparable to about fifteen grams of raw herb. Everyone knows that Chinese medicine prescriptions oftentimes comes in packages, and each package contains ten different kinds of herbs. Each herb is calculated into ten gram portions with the total being a hundred grams. It cooks up to one large pot full of herbs. In that case, in taking three capsules which is comparable to fifteen grams of raw herb, there is a significant difference in dosage from one dose of medicinal soup. How then can we imagine that the efficacy of three capsules to be about the same as the soup dose? [Please note that the contents of the capsule is refined and condensed medicinal powder.]

My strategy for solving this problem is; in targeting cancer I simplify the capsules or tablets to the utmost, with each kind of component easily reaching maximum efficacy. This is the first step. The second step is to take Conso-#1 therapy method and divide it into prescription series. In this way, there is benefit based on usage for different cancers, with enough effective components for basic protection. The third step is that Conso-#1 concentrates its firepower on fighting disease power of the body and targets the crux of the problem, the malignancy of cancer. Other problems are given to a high level supplement to complete, that is the conso-health restoration soup method.

One look and you will understand that the conso-health restoration soup method in addition to targeting cancer’s core pathology, targets peripheral pathology promoting regulation and repair. We already know cancer’s eight main pathologies, what then do we mean by core pathology and peripheral pathology? Core pathology can be summed up in two words; ‘stagnating toxins’, which is blood stasis and thermo-toxins. Blood stasis forms tumor and thermo-toxins promote their spread. Peripheral pathology is a corresponding concept. My goal is to use cancer’s eight main principles of pathology that we previously discussed to make it easily understandable; qi stagnation, blood stasis, water obstruction, thermo-toxins, qi vacuity, blood vacuity, yin vacuity, yang vacuity. Conso-health restoration soup targets exactly these eight pathologies, and moves a step further by repairing them.

Please note that the eight main pathologies of cancer oftentimes have mutual cause and effect, are mutually interwoven, leading to the development of many extremely complicated pathologies. Because of this, conso-health restoration prescriptions have a fundamental plan, but adding to it or subtracting from it can be implemented based on the patient’s concrete condition.

Below I will introduce the eight main basic prescriptions for the conso-health restoration soup method and give examples of prescription changes based on the concrete condition of the patient. Please note that I do not recommend that cancer patients take these on their own because correct usage depends on correct diagnosis. Therefore, I hope that patients will go to a reputable Chinese medicine clinic in their area and use these under the guidance of a specialist. Moreover, in taking responsibility for everyone’s health, I have recommended six components in every Chinese medicine prescription all of which are extremely safe. Other components should be used based on the expertise of the Chinese doctor.

Example of changed prescription: Spleen with yang vacuity, add dried ginger rhizome; heart with yang vacuity, add cinnamon twig.

These eight basic prescriptions, in practical usage oftentimes are interwoven and connected. Therefore, if we made changes to prescriptions based on every development, probably at a minimum there would be a hundred, up to a thousand and perhaps even more. Actually, every pathological condition has its own special characteristics, so in concrete usage of conso-health restoration soup, it is extremely flexible, however their scope universally takes these eight prescription formulas as a foundation.

Dear Reader,in order to deepen your understanding, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Conso-#3, Acupuncture Therapy Method

Conso-#4, Moxibustion Therapy Method

In the last chapter, we discussed conso-anti-cancer method #2, the conso-health restoration soup therapy. This chapter will focus on acupuncture and moxibustion used in the conso-therapy method; Conso-#3, acupuncture therapy method and Conso-#4, moxibustion therapy method.

Conso-#3, conso-acupuncture therapy method:

Conso-acupuncture therapy method uses Chinese medicine’s needling skills to promote regulation of cancer pathology. Regarding acupuncture needling, many cancer patients harbor doubt and fear. Doubt as to whether acupuncture needling will be of any help, and fear that the needling will cause pain.

Is acupuncture needling effective? While I was editor-in-chief of a 1,300,000 word book entitled International Acupuncture and Moxibustion Medical Practitioner Exchange Handbook, I wrote that acupuncture and moxibustion’s medical skill originated three thousand years ago, and in fact it goes back to ten thousand years ago, and even further to several tens of thousands years ago during the Old Stone Age. At that time, people already ground stone to make a sharp point, and used point pressure to promote the cure of illness. Historians call this ‘stone probe’, ‘stone probe needle’, or ‘stone needle’. During the New Stone Age, people began to use animal bones to make bone needles. Following the development of science and technology, gold, silver and iron needles were developed, all the way up to present day stainless steel needles.

In the 1970’s, acupuncture and moxibustion medical skill advanced with a major breakthrough, disseminating throughout the world. California legalized acupuncture and moxibustion, moreover instituted an exam system awarding a specialist license for acupuncture and moxibustion. Subsequently, many states followed suit and presently there are forty five states which have legalized acupuncture and moxibustion. Most fascinating is the fact that licensed acupuncturists not only can engage in acupuncture and moxibustion but also have the right to prescribe Chinese herbs and do massage, etc. Therefore, in actual fact, in the United States, the acupuncture practitioner is the same as a Chinese medicine practitioner.

An opportunity has opened for acupuncture and moxibustion achieving recognition by the government of a Western country, the United States, moreover it has received legal protection. There must be reasons behind this. The root cause is that acupuncture and Chinese medicine, etc. have a definitive effect. Why is that?

Speaking from the perspective of Chinese medicine, the piercing of an acupuncture needle passes through and permeates the meridian system which transmits induction, achieving the goal of promoting qi and blood movement and regulating yin-yang equilibrium. Looking at the research of modern science on the analgesic mechanism of acupuncture, when the needle goes into the body, it produces a pain signal, and this signal passes through the spinal cord, then enters the brain’s analgesic system producing a stimulating effect, and from this an analgesic response is produced. During this process, cerebrospinal fluid and a kind of analgesic substance in the brain called endorphins clearly increases, moreover the concentration level of matter which leads to pain in peripheral blood, for example potassium-ion, histamines and bradykinin, decreases.

In 1997, after the National Institute of Health in the United States completed specialized topic research, they drew clear conclusions on the efficacy of acupuncture. With regard to post-surgical and chemo-therapy induced nausea and vomiting, as well as vomiting from pregnancy and post operative tooth pain, there was a definitive curative effect. Moreover, it was recommended to go a step further in implementing research on even more kinds of illness.

This puts the question of acupuncture efficacy beyond doubt. Moreover, the second problem of needles producing pain should now be completely resolved. Since the needling has a very strong analgesic effect, it is used to stop pain, not to exacerbate pain. Of course, it should be said that the split second during which the needle enters, there might be a feeling of discomfort similar to the sting of a mosquito, however, it disappears right away and also the degree to which there is pain when the needle is inserted depends on the skill of the acupuncture doctor. Now it is common to see advertisements in the United States from Chinese medicine oncology research centers which say; ‘No pain acupuncture and moxibustion, no bitter flavored Chinese medicine’. This reflects my goal, to exert the utmost effort to change people’s habitual perception of Chinese medicine as ‘Painful needles, Bitter herbs’.

Dear Reader, now that your doubts are gone and fear has dissipated, allow me to introduce the conso-acupuncture therapy method, and how it is used in fighting cancer.

When conso-acupuncture therapy is used concretely to fight cancer, depending on the needs of the pathological condition, there is a division between large needle method and small needle method.

The large needle method is actually not as you might imagine, big and long needles piercing the body. They are simply large compared to the smaller needles. The large needle method is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for body acupuncture. What then is body acupuncture? It utilizes the theory of Chinese medicine meridians, taking the acupuncture points of the body’s fourteen channels and vessels as the foundation, then implementing needle piercing. Since the human body has over four hundred acupuncture points, which one should be pierced? In conso-therapy, based on clinical intuition, I put forth the Nine Yang, Six Yin acupuncture method, and select the bilateral Zu San Li, bilateral San Yin Jiao, bilateral Zhao Hai, [ all of these acupuncture points are located on the leg and thigh], the bilateral Nei Guan, [on the upper limb], Bai Hui, [on the top of the head], a total of five acupuncture points, and nine needles. Here I would like to emphasize that the needle piercing actually has two secrets: The first is precise selection of the acupuncture point, the second is keen hand skill. So-called hand skill is the split moment of needle insertion and moving the needle after it is in. As for the hand skill in moving the needle, I utilize the Nine Yang, Six Yin method. Because this book was primarily written for the general public, for a doctor, some of the concrete operating methods of operation do not have many detailled references. Once a pathological condition has already been basically stabilized, or for those who cannot rid themselves of fear of needle piercing, I generally use two basic acupuncture points; bilateral Zu San Li, and bilateral San Yin Jiao.

Please refer back to chapter 67 for the functions and selection of acupuncture points; Zu San Li, Nei Guan, and Bai Hui. Here I will only briefly introduce San Yin Jiao and Zhao Hai. San Yin Jiao as the term suggests, are three lengths converged along the yin channel. San Yin Jiao basically belongs to the spleen channel, but the liver and kidney channel vessels also intersect here, therefore this acupuncture point has three functions: Regulating the spleen, the liver and the kidney. In addition, it has a regulating effect upon menstruation and is a key acupuncture point in gynecology. It’s concrete location is three inches above the apex of the Zu Nei Ke, behind the entocnenial border. Zhao Hai, is a kidney channel acupuncture point, located on the medial margin of the foot, below the apex of the Dang Nei Ke, in the hollow indentation. Its function is to enrich the kidney Yin, clear vacuous heat, disinhibit urine, quiet the spirit and regulate menses.

The efficacy of the Nine Yang Six Yin acupuncture method is in its ability to regulate qi and blood, promote original qi, and raise an organism’s disease fighting capability.

In addition to large needle acupuncture method, there is also the small needle method. I have previously mentioned the hologram theory which says that all the functions of the human body can pass through a certain, specialized local response, for instance the ear, foot, palm of the hand, etc. Because of this, there arose a method of ear, foot, hand, and scalp needles, etc. The conso-therapy method primarily uses ear needles.

According to the theory of ear needles in Chinese medicine, on the tiny surface of the ear, there is division into many reaction points. These points are divided into responses by the heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, stomach, large and small intestine, gall bladder, bladder and other organ functions. In addition, represented are; cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, all joints, the five sense organs, and other body tissue functions. In stimulating these points, they can regulate corresponding organ tissue function. There are many methods using the ear needle, and I primarily use the attach pressure method, which takes Chinese herbal seeds or magnetic pearls, places them in adhesive plaster and attaches them with pressure to designated stimulating points. The special characteristics of the ear acupuncture attach pressure method are its simplicity, convenience and safety. After attaching with pressure, the patient himself or a relative or friend can stimulate the spot to increase the therapeutic effect. I base the selection of acupuncture points focussing on the cancer, using corresponding organ tissue response points. In addition, depending on the concrete pathological condition, other response points which match appropriately are used. For those who cannot tolerate the big needle method and yet still hope to reap the benefits of the acupuncture and moxibustion method, the ear needle is an excellent choice.

                     Conso-therapy Number 4: Conso-moxibustion method

There are many situations where I combine the use of acupuncture and moxibustion. For various reasons, and when needle piercing acupuncture cannot be tolerated, the moxibustion method can be used by itself. The moxibustion method also has the advantage of being easy to teach to a patient or a patient’s family so they can treat themselves at home.

Conso-moxibustion therapy is different from conventional moxibustion therapy in that it utilizes the moxibustion as a vehicle, taking special Chinese herbal anti-cancer components and guiding them into the body. How does it guide them into the body? If you’d like to unravel the clue, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Moxibustion and Aromatics, Two Combined into One

Conso-salve Therapy, the Fifth Consolidation

In the last chapter, we discussed anti-cancer conso-therapy method #4, the conso-acupuncture method. Here we will begin with a brief review of chapter #78 where we used the term ‘consolidation’ for the conso-anti-cancer therapy methods. At present, there are eight consolidations, or eight types of therapies divided into; Conso-#1, conso-health restoration soup method, conso-acupuncture method, conso-moxibustion method, conso-salve method, conso-diet method, conso-vital point method and conso-heart method. This chapter will continue with Conso-#4 method and then turn to the Conso-#5 method.

Conso-moxibustion therapy, using moxa as a medium, takes special Chinese herbs with an anti-cancer component and leads them into the body. The basic rules of procedure are as follows:

Take an appropriate quantity of moxa and ignite it, placing it into the moxa box.

Place the moxa medicine pouch on the navel.

Place the moxa box on top of the conso-moxa medicine pouch.

If the weather is cold or the room is cold, a magnetic therapy lamp can be added above the moxa box.

My patients are likely to ask what is the rationale is behind this. My analysis is that the functional mechanism and efficacy of the conso-moxibustion method has three aspects. The first is material function; burning the moxa which will directly warms up a part of the body, promoting increased blood flow circulation. The second is chemical function; the moxa fuzz is used along with the pouch of conso-moxa herbs which can both, warming up and lead in the medicinal matter ions into the body, promoting blood circulation and producing a chemical response. The third is use of aromatics. What is their function?

Everyone knows that the fashionable aromatic method that began in Europe has now has become popular throughout the whole world. At present, aromatics are primarily still used for cosmetics. However, its curative efficacy has continually engaged the attention of the medical world. Certainly many people will be interested in my conso-moxa medicine pouch and some may think there is a secret component inside. In fact there is some truth to this, however one thing I can tell you that the answer to the riddle is use of the principle of aromatics. In the conso-moxa medicine pouch there are 2 parts; one part is easily absorbed through the skin, guiding in the anti-cancer Chinese herb component, the other part is aromatics used in Chinese medicine. This kind of aromatic use of Chinese herbal medicine starts out as a medium. Chinese herbs initiate this function by dispersing an aromatic fragrance. This kind of aroma will firstly promote even faster penetration of the medicinal matter through the skin to disperse inside the body, and secondly as it passes through the sense of smell in the nose, it also absorbs a portion of medicinal matter ions.

Here a question emerges; can Chinese medicine actually use aromatics to pass through and be absorbed by the skin into the body. In fact, it can. If you think about it, the therapy for skin illness is through medicinal ointment, so both Chinese or Western medicine are good at achieving absorption through the skin and having a curative effect. Another example is therapy for joint pain or waist pain, etc. where the external application of either Chinese or Western ointment will have a curative effect. Clearly this illustrates that the skin can absorb medicinal components. However, if dry medicinal powder is sprinkled directly on the skin, then absorption will be very difficult. Therefore, the conso-moxibustion method necessitates the use of aromatics as a medium and only then can the Chinese medicine dry powder components be enabled to be guided into the body effectively.

Here is an experimental example. If garlic juice is smeared on animal’s foot arch, a dissection of the animal 24 hours later shows an astonishing 70% of the animal tissue contains garlic component. The garlic itself was not fed to the animal, it was the strong odor that took the garlic component and led it into the body. Aromatic therapy is like this. The herbal material itself is not ingested through the mouth and yet it can pass through the skin by means of a strong aromatic odor where it permeates and is absorbed.

The last question is why choose the navel? Please do a quick review of chapter #68 where I introduced the navel as a vital point. It’s name is Shen Que, or Spiritual Watchtower. It belongs to the Ren Mai, the Controlling Vessel, it returns yang, and secures prolapse, boosts Xia Yuan, and has a regulating effect on the yang of the stomach. Recent research shows that of all of the skin on the body, the naval is the site with the most sensitivity and has the strongest absorption capability. Because of this, the navel is selected since it has a curative effect similar to a vital point, and is the site which most easily guides in medicinal matter. Please note that for some patients who have surgical scars in need of recovery or have tubes attached to the gastro-intestinal system and there is no way to engage the navel site, then selection of the Zhong Wan point can be used as a substitute, [please review chapter# 67] and in addition, other acupuncture points can be used as well.

               Conso-#5: Conso-salve therapy

I’d like to illustrate the efficacy of conso-salve therapy with a most recent example. A middle-aged woman with lung cancer underwent surgery and chemo-therapy in Malaysia. Afterwards, a metastasis was found in the colon and she went to Singapore for an additional surgery and chemo-therapy. However after a short period of time, the colon cancer re-emerged and she eventually came to the United States for treatment. When she came to see me, after continual chemotherapy treatments, she felt extremely terrified and hoped that Chinese medicine would be able to help her. Her lower abdomen was distended and projected outwards, near the navel area was a distinct, protruding lump and next to the lump was were corresponding smaller lumps. The feel of the entire area was like a bat with open wings. She had excruciating pain and began with using Western medicine morphine type drugs packaged in external stick-on pharmaceutical patch form to control pain, but later on it gradually became ineffective. In my treatment process, I selected use of Chinese herbal powder which was mixed into salve and applied externally. The result was that her abdominal pain clearly diminished and from this point on she emerged out of despair.

I have had many contacts with this type of patient, even those whose lives were imperiled by not being able to eat. I utilize this external salve therapy method which has obtained unexpectedly curative results for many patients. Because of this, it is my belief that external salve medicine is one of the outstanding characteristics of Chinese anti-cancer medicine. While I was editor-in-chief of China’s Shandong Science and Technology Publishing House and Taiwan’s Zhong Hua Shu Ju, publication of both the simplified and traditional Chinese version of the book: Zhong Guo Yi Xue Liao Fa Da Quan, The Complete Works of China’s Medical Science Curative Therapies , I named this type of method as ‘paste-on medicine method’. Those readers who are interested can use it as a comparative reference. Among the conso-therapies, I have coined the term: Conso-salve therapy method.

Conso-salve therapy’s concrete operational method is as follows: Take the Chinese herbs and grind them finely, pass them through a sieve, then use water, vinegar, or oil substances, etc. to mix into a pasty form, then spread evenly on cloth and attach directly onto the injured area. Overlay the outside with plastic thin covering, then use adhesive plaster to secure it. Generally speaking, every evening it should be attached and every morning removed, replacing it with a new one the following evening. Sometimes for convenience, I will also sprinkle the medicine powder on a ready-made analgesic medicine cloth and attach it directly on the injured area.

This brings up two questions: Firstly, where to apply the salve, and secondly, what medicine should be selected. The salve is, for the most part is placed on the injured area, for example for an abdominal tumor, liver tumor or skin tumor, it is placed on the site of protrusion. In addition, depending on actual circumstance, attaching to certain acupuncture points can also be considered. The medicine is primarily selected for its permeability and absorption through the skin. I have seen advertising promotions claiming to use externally attached paste which contains a high quality tonic from the ginseng category. This lacks credibility because the Chinese herbs of the enriching supplement types have great difficulty penetrating the skin and being absorbed. Most of Chinese herbs which easily penetrate the skin and are absorbed, oftentimes have a strong odor, for example: Borneol, field mint, clove flower bud, garlic bulb, etc. or have medicinal properties of being greatly acrid, greatly hot, greatly cold or be made up of other medicinal matter like cinnamon bark, radix aconti, rhubarb root, etc. In sum, it must be able to produce a definitive quantity of stimulation to the skin, promoting the skin to ‘Open wide the main gate, welcome the troops into the city.’

I will cite several minor prescriptions as an example:

1. Peking spurge root, 1.5g, Chinese date, 5 to 10 pieces, pound into soft, pasty form and stick to the navel. This is a cure for constipation.

2. Small red bean, pulvis arisaemae cum felle bovis in equal amounts, ground fine. Use ginger juice to mix a paste and attach to the Tai Yang vital point. This cures acute conjunctivitis.

3. Atractylodes [black] rhizome, aristolochia root, each 6g., amur cork-tree bark, coral bean bark, each 10g. Grind finely and mix with vinegar, applying salve to injured area. This is a curative therapy for moist-heat beriberi.

Perhaps some readers think it strange that my examples of external salve prescriptions don’t include cancer. Because cancer is such a problematic illness to overcome, external salve herbs necessarily require highly aromatic, strongly acrid, strongly hot and cold, even to the point of high levels of toxicity, only then are we able to reach a relatively ideal effect. However, we must avoid the occurrence of toxic side-effects. Therefore in the interest of protecting the health of the public, I do not plan on listing anti-cancer salve prescriptions in this book. For those who are in actual need, please contact your American based Chinese medicine oncology research center.

Dear Reader, we have already completed our discussion of the 5th anti-cancer consolidation, conso-salve therapy. Almost everyday in my clinic, I face patients with the same concerns; ‘for a cancer patient, which foods should I eat, or not eat’, or ‘should I convert to a strict vegetarian diet’? etc. In the next chapter, I will focus on the question of which foods a cancer patient should avoid. This leads us to a specialized discussion of the 6th conso-anti-cancer therapy, conso-diet therapy. If you’d like to unravel the clues, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #86

Dietary Restrictions Follow an Orderly Pattern

Anti-cancer Diet Therapy, the Sixth Consolidation

In the last chapter, we discussed the 5th consolidation, conso-salve therapy. This chapter will focus on the 6th consolidation: The conso-diet therapy method.

Concrete application of conso-dietary therapy has three primary conceptual aspects which will be explained below.

The first chief concept of dietary therapy is establishing new dietary patterns. Please review chapter #50 concerning the question of regulating dietary patterns. Why then is it necessary to establish new diet patterns?

In a considerable number of cases, the old eating patterns of cancer patients have been abnormal for a long period of time and many times they have irregular dietary patterns as well. For example, eating three meals a day at irregular intervals, sometimes going hungry, sometimes eating too much, sometimes drinking or eating to an excess, etc. After being stricken by cancer, the most pressing issue is to immediately establish completely new eating patterns. For example, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at set times, as well as eating a set amount. If the pathological condition is serious and eating is difficult or digestive power is weak, then small quantity meals can be eaten more frequently. However it is still necessary to strictly adhered to established times for eating. This can done either by oneself or by a family member who sets up a complete dietary plan.A set dietary routine helps regulate the body’s dietary metabolism, and from this the essential nutrients of the food obtain complete absorption and the food waste can be quickly eliminated. Therefore, the concrete establishment of new dietary methods is based on regular meals, three times a day, with controlled quantities; ‘In the morning eat well but a small quantity, at noon eat until 90% full, in the evening eat until 80% full.’ If conditions of illness necessitate it, then four, five or even six or more small meals can be consumed. In chapter #50, we also mentioned the restriction on eating snack food to avoid breaking down dietary regularity, a habit which increases the problem of burdening the gastro-intestinal system. This is of utmost importance.

The second issue which needs to be addressed is that of setting up new regulations for food selection. If you are not originally a strict vegetarian, then it is not necessary for you to change into a vegetarian. Please review the relevant content from chapters 63-65 which discuss the principle of food selection. The first principle concerns the main food of the meal, which should be eaten in small quantities, moreover should be combined on a regular basis with rice or wheat as well as corn, millet, potatoes and other coarse grains. The second principle concerns the side dishes which should be eaten in appropriate abundance. Please note that the principle of food selection is ‘ Five many, three few’.

The first of ‘Five many’ is to eat many vegetables and fruits; the second of ‘Five many’ is eat many sea foods; the third of ‘Five many’ is to eat many bean products; the fourth of ‘Five many’ is drink lots of cow’s milk; the fifth of ‘Five many’ is to drink lots of vinegar. The first of ‘three few’ is to eat less meat; the second of ‘three few’ is to eat less salt; the third of ‘three few’ is to eat less sugar. For concrete content and basic principles please refer back to earlier chapters.

The third principle is to combine regularly eaten foods with anti-cancer ones. One concept which requires clarification is that some people believe that sole reliance on food as therapy can reach an effective cure for cancer and this is not possible. Remember the theory: ‘Medicine and food, the same source’. That is to say that the production of Chinese herbs and food come from the same source. The ancients practiced the taking good flavors and easily cultivated plants and categorized them as daily food products, knowledge gained over a long period of time. They took the unpleasant flavored or difficult to find plants or ones that required special conditions for cultivation and categorized them as medicinal plants. Therefore, the Four qi and Five flavors are oftentimes mild tasting and primarily intended to satisfy the nourishment needs of the body. The Four qi and Five flavors of the medicinal plants oftentimes have extreme flavors and are primarily used for curing illness. Said another way, since the medicinal plants and foods come from the same source, then food items also have a definitive curative effect, and the medicinal plants also have a definitive food value. Please note that we are talking about natural vegetable herbs and not those chemically combined with Western medicines. Though food has a therapeutic effect, comparatively speaking, it has relatively light effect and cannot reach true cure efficacy for a hard to cure illness.

Even though this is the case, we still must take the medicinal cure potential in food products and develop it to the fullest. The cancer patient needs to combine food products from every day life with those which have anti-cancer properties. Chapters 51-61, discuss types of daily food products and their efficacy. Based on medical theory, I will introduce the use of commonly used anti-cancer food products.

We already know that the conso-therapy method for cancer pathology takes ‘stasis toxicity’ as the central core of the eight main pathologies. In utilizing diet therapy, ‘stasis’ is targeted by quickening the blood and transforming stasis.Toxicity is targeted by clearing heat and resolving toxins. In targeting other pathologies, use of other food products which have relevant functions are incorporated. Accordingly, conso-therapy method of anti-cancer foods are divided into categories and these commonly used product types are as follows:

Types for Rectifying qi: Tangerine peel, tangerine pit, field mint, kumquat, finger citron fruit, lemon peel, lichee pit, etc.

Types for quickening blood: Safflower flower, hawthorn fruit, young flower of Chinese rose, etc.

Types for disinhibiting water: Winter melon skin, corn silk, small red bean, etc.

Types for de-toxification: Green bean, sponge gourd, bitter gourd, green tea, chrysanthemum flower, dandelion, honeysuckle flower, white plum blossom, etc.

Types to supplement qi: Sclerotium of tuckahoe, Chinese yam, seeds of Job’s tears, Chinese date.

Types to supplement yin: Pear, sugar cane, watermelon, duck meat, pork meat rind, pig spinal cord, honey.

Types to supplement blood: Chinese angelica root, flesh of the longan fruit, mulberry fruit-spike, fleeceflower root, etc.

Types that supplement yang: Chinese wolfberry fruit, black tea, velvet of young deer antler, lamb meat, chicken meat, etc.

At present, conso-diet therapy can effectively target different kinds of cancers, and from research comes a series of dietary prescriptions. These prescription methods have been are clinically proven and show excellent results. I introduce them especially to help the extensive cancer patient community. Please note the following points:

Taking into consideration the different dietary habits of each individual, conso-dietary therapy primarily uses a boiled soup method because absorption of soup nutrients is almost 100%, and it allows everyone to eat easily and enjoy taking advantage of the widest food selection.

Although fighting cancer is the goal, it is still necessary to understand which foods should be eaten, and which should be avoided.

In each dietary prescription, the quantities measured according to an adult standard, therefore children and the elderly should reduce the quantity by half.

The seven day dietary prescription is only appropriate for cancer patients. Based on whether or not the pathological condition is minor or major, select a weekly cycle, every month implementing two to four cycles. For those ordinary people who have cancer prevention as a goal, then based on age and body constitution, add appropriate changes. On principle, every week select one to two prescriptions and taking doses for one to two days will be adequate.

For those who don’t eat meat, you can select the vegetarian food options.

The recipes above are best using a slow pot cooker and changing the prescription every day. Please note that if a basically normal diet can be maintained at the present time, then drink the above prescriptions as one small bowl at breakfast every day. If at present drinking and eating is reduced, then drink a small bowl every morning and evening. If food and drink intake is very minimal, then take a small quantity every 2 hours, 6 to 8 times a day. Drink each dose warmed up. If dosages are taken often, the shelf life cannot exceed 12 hours. If it is not possible to take anything in by mouth, it can be fed through a stomach tube six to ten times every day.

Below are some diet therapy related questions are the concern of every cancer patient and their relatives. The first question is whether or not fish and shrimp are appropriate to eat because of their effusion qualities. Any item has its advantages and disadvantages. In speaking of fish and seafood, firstly we must distinguish the concepts of fresh water and ocean products.

A fresh water river product such as mackerel, has a sweet taste, a harmonious nature and is non-toxic. It is effective a clearing heat, resolving toxins, and clearly is anti-cancer. Fresh water fish such as soft-shelled turtle, fresh water turtle, have a sweet and salty flavor, a calm nature and are also non-toxic. They are effective at enriching yin, cooling the blood, boosting the liver, supplementing the kidney, dissipating soft and hard binds and have anti-cancer properties. Turtle is divided into fresh water and ocean turtle. It’s flavor is sweet and sour, its nature is warm, and is effective at enriching and supplementing body strength as well as boosting longevity. Tortoise shell [ also called Gui Ban], can supplement the kidney, heart, blood and is anti-tumor. Field snail has a sweet flavor, cold nature, and is non-toxic. It is effective at clearing heat, disinhibiting urine, resolving toxins, dispersing swelling, and has anti-cancer properties. It is especially useful in dispersing cancerous swelling in ascitic fluid. Loach or mudfish have a sweet flavor, a calm nature and are non-toxic. They are effective at warming and boosting qi, resolving toxins, contracting hemorrhoids, and have anti-cancer properties. Earthworm, called earth dragon in Chinese medicine, has a sweet, slightly bitter flavor, and is slightly cold. It is effective at clearing heat, controlling tetany, opening vessel network, disinhibiting urine, calming panting and has anti-cancer properties. Crab is divided into fresh water crab and ocean crab. Their flavor is salty, nature is cold, and is non-toxic. It is effective at clearing heat and quickening blood, extending tendons to cure injury, enriching yin, and boosting qi. Crab shell are able to cure unnamed tumors, fall injuries, twisted waist injuries, frostbite, etc. Moreover, it has an anti-cancer function.

Ocean products: Sea cucumber has over twenty different types of which ‘plum blossom sea cucumber’ is the king. Its flavor is sweet, slightly salty, with a warm nature and is non-toxic. It is effective at supplementing the kidney and strengthening yang, boosting qi, enriching yin, opening passage for the intestine by moistening dryness, stopping bleeding, dispersing inflammation, is anti-toxin and anti-cancer. Oyster has a sweet and salty flavor, slightly cold nature, is effective at enriching yin, nourishing the blood, nourishing the heart, calming the spirit, transforming phlegm both soft and hard, clearing heat, disinhibiting dampness, dissipating dyspepsia and is anti-cancer. Shark has a sweet flavor, calm nature, and is non-toxic. It is effective at supplementing the core, boosting qi, nourishing blood, disinhibiting water and is anti-cancer. Shark, throughout its lifetime never has an occurrence of cancer, and research shows that shark have an astonishing amount of immune power. Its immune system can secrete a kind of enzyme which destroys cancer cells, moreover it contains high levels of vitamin A, which is also an important protective substance against cancer. Fish maw is considered by China to be one of the treasures of the sea, and is primarily the stomach of the shark, the eel, yellow croaker, etc. It has a sweet flavor, a calm nature, is non-toxic and is effective at supplementing kidney, securing essence, moistening lung, fortifying spleen, quickening blood, supplementing blood, dispersing inflammation in muscle, extending old age and is anti-cancer. Ribbonfish is a kind of scaleless, high fat fish, with a sweet flavor, warm nature, is non-toxic, warms the stomach, supplements vacuity, moistens skin and is anti-cancer. When eating it, do not scrape away the oily layer of silver white color on the surface. Kelp, called kunbu in Chinese medicine, is highly renowned for containing high amounts of potassium. Its flavor is salty, and its nature is cold and slippery. It is non-toxic and is effective at dissipating soft and hard binds, clearing heat, disinhibiting urine, dispersing swelling and is anti-cancer. Before eating it, it should be soaked in water for up to 24 hours, and vigorously scrubbed in the water to remove arsenic and prevent arsenic poisoning. Seaweed, also called sea grass, contains large quantities of coarse fiber. Its flavor is salty, nature is cold, is non-toxic and is effective at dissipating soft and hard binds, clearing heat, disinhibiting water, dispelling phlegm and is anti-cancer.

To further our understanding of the basic fresh water and ocean products above, let’s look at some answers:

The types of fresh water and ocean products in the examples above all have excellent nutritional value and a definitive anti-cancer effect. For those who enjoy seafood, it can be eaten often as a cancer preventive, but it should not be eaten everyday. In order to avoid excess, vegetables and fruits should still be the mainstay of the diet.

For those whose goal is to fight cancer after cancer has been discovered, regardless of what type of medical treatment measures are selected, in all cases there should be a prompt reduction in the consumption of fish and shrimp products.

Dear Reader, please read on to gain more analytical understanding in the next chapter.

Chat #87

Great Supplements: Raw Food and Hunger

Vital points, Massage, Consolidation-#7

In the last chapter we discussed 3 concepts of conso-dietary therapy among the conso-anti-cancer methods. In addition we addressed the concern about whether or not cancer patients should eat fish and shrimp. Now we will continue with related questions.

3. While taking the conso-anti-cancer treasure tablet and conso-health restoration soup, on principle it is not advisable to have fish and shrimp. In other words, as long as Chinese medicine is being taken either orally [or through the stomach], in both cases, fish and shrimp should be avoided due to its stimulating nature and its influence on digestion and absorption of food. However, there are 2 exceptions; One, is if the patient is able to eat only a very miniscule amount of food and is extremely weak and thin. At this point, on principle, the patient can eat whatever they want, in order to maintain nutrition under the most limited conditions. Two, is if the patient ordinarily enjoys eating fish and shrimp and if suddenly eliminating it will cause a feeling of discomfort both mentally and physically. In those cases the way to manage this situation is as follows:

The first step: first eliminate shrimp because shrimp has a comparatively ‘effusive’ nature.

The second step: select fresh water products to eat and avoid sea water products.

The third step: gradually reduce eating frequency, and gradually increase vegetable products.

4. As in the cases described above, when taking Chinese medicine everyone should pay attention to accompanying the dosage with green beans and honey products to resolve toxins and prevent ‘effusion’.

The second question concerns the use of supplementation with Chinese medicine and food products. China’s extensive supplementation with food items, comes from a food product culture which is often referred to as: ‘Mountain delicacy, Ocean flavors’. Representative examples include; Shark fin, [ using the shark’s back fin, chest fin and tail fin, processed for production], bear paw, swallow nest, monkey head, [this is not the head of a monkey but rather a kind of mushroom called monkey head mushroom], etc. In terms of Chinese medicine, there are great supplement capabilities including; Ginseng root, American ginseng root, cordyceps, velvet of young deer antler, xue lian Tibetan saffron, etc. Needless to say, these food and medicinal items are very costly and for many people they are out of reach. An alternative is to select items such as: Chinese wolfberry fruit, longan fruit, pulp, Chinese date, huai Chinese yam, etc. My method is to take the precious food and medicinal ingredients and combine them with inexpensive food ingredients to make Chinese medicine. It is necessary to incorporate the precious ingredients but ordinarily the inexpensive ingredients are also satisfactory. If one is able to maintain equilibrium using inexpensive ingredients to enrich and supplement, then a small quantity may be enough to accumulate to a definitive level, and this may also produce effective quantitative as well as qualitative changes.

However, in the case of a life hanging precariously, the precious food ingredients in the Chinese medicine oftentimes are able to stimulate the body’s potential strength in an instant.

The third question concerns eating raw food. Of course, we have repeatedly emphasized the importance of eating an abundance of vegetables and fruits. Here we will focus on the use of raw foods for those with cancer. According to American natural therapy practitioner, Dr. Weigemoer’s research, there are two sources for illness, one is unhealthy nutrition, the second is chronic toxicity. If a certain section of the body is relatively vacuous and weak, then poor nutrition can easily turn into illness; if unhealthy food items are eaten, then toxic elements remain inside the body which can accumulate and turn into disease. He considers raw food as giving the body complete nutrition, preventing the build up of toxic elements and eliminating them from the body. In addition, cooked food which has gone through processing and heating, destroys many nutritional components. I consider this a good concept, however, I do not completely endorse eating only raw food, because eating too much raw food can also lead to the gastro-intestinal system blockage of digestion and absorption. When the ancients invented fire, this spurred on the production of cooked food which reduced gastro-intestinal system illnesses as well as others. Therefore, I advocate a combination of raw and cooked foods, and in this way we can expand our food item selection even broader.

The fourth question concerns the starvation therapy method. For all kinds of reasons, one being to a stop dietary accumulation or to stave off indigestion, the starvation method is very effective. However from the point of view of cancer, I oppose the food starvation method. Once the body has been stricken with cancer, on the one hand the body’s immune system is insufficient, on the other hand the cancer cells are desperately fighting to swallow up the body’s nutrition. The nutrition that we give to the body is intended to raise the body’s resistance, creating an opportunity for repair. Of course, during this process the cancer cells also benefit from this outcome, taking the opportunity to nourish themselves. Therefore, we must take action to attack the cancer cells, making it impossible for the cancer cells to obtain nutrition from the body.

The 7th Consolidation: Conso-vital point method

In chapter #67, we discussed the vital point method in the conso-health restoration method, namely, hot point: Lao Nei He, sore point: Zhong Bai Qi, selected points: San Li Wei, rubbing heat to the ear: Yong Fu. These are primarily used for personal health protection. The conso-vital points discussed here are directed for use by a doctor, under the guidance of a doctor, or done by a professional masseur. A portion of this skill can be taught to the patient and their family for self-implementation.

Appropriate symptoms: Cancer induced pain, cancer or chemo-therapy induced fatigue, head, neck, shoulder, back, waist, thigh muscle tension and sore pain during the course of illness, emotional depression, pressure, insomnia, cancer recurrence, etc.

Symptoms prohibited from using vital point massage: ulcerated skin, red swelling, spotted rash. None of these conditions can utilize the vital point massage. Patients with bleeding must also be cautious in using vital point massage. Those with bone cancer, and bone substance with a serious degree of areosis also cannot use vital point massage.

Amount of force: best is to use a light and gentle motion, controlling it to within a moderate degree.

Finger power: There are the one ,two, three, four and five finger meditation methods.

The one finger meditation has 2 forms: One uses the thumb belly as a point of force. The second uses the index finger extended out straight with the thumb and middle finger tightly pressing on the first joint of the index finger. This causes the index finger shape to form a cone, its finger point and finger belly form the point of force.

In the two finger meditation, the index finger and middle finger combine together with the finger point and finger belly form the point of force.

In the three finger meditation, the index, middle and fourth finger combine together with the finger points forming a level shape, the thumb and pinkie finger separate from both sides and squeeze together, making the three finger points and finger bellies to form the point of force.

In the four finger meditation, also called the fist finger meditation, the hand tightly forms a fist [with the thumb sustaining pressure on the middle joint of the index finger, the center of the fist faces down with back side of the second joint of the index, middle, fourth finger and pinkie form the point of force].

Five finger meditation also called hook finger meditation, is the martial arts hook hand in which the pinkie fingers stretched straight, the five finger bellies are brought together forming an eagle mouth hook, using the five finger points and the finger bellies to form the point of force.

                Method: Three Types

The first method is a fast and effective control of pain, with the thumb using the one finger meditation method. Begin by having the patient practice deep breathing method. While practicing this technique, place the thumb of one hand lightly on the painful area, and as the patient breathes deeply, use the thumb to follow the breath and exert pressure at the top of the painful area. Then afterwards, follow the patient’s slow deep breath and lightly withdraw the thumb. In general, repeat 5-10 times to see effective results, 1-3 times each day. The entire process should be done slowly, gently, with force going from shallow to deep, from deep to shallow.

An easy version of the second method is regulating by using the governing vessel. Earlier I introduced the governing vessel which primarily circulates in the center of the back, follows along the vertebra from the vertex to the sacrococcyx. The governing vessel always governs and regulates the entire body’s yang qi, causing it to move freely, and stimulating the body’s yang qi to flow. Start the second method by having the patient lie in a prone position or sit straddling a chair. Remove upper clothes exposing the back; follow with the following steps: 1. Induce yang: Using the thumb in the one finger meditation method, support with pressure the bai hui acupuncture point, the vital point on the top of the head, [see chapter 67], for about 1 minute. 2. Open passage for du, governing vessel: Use the 4 finger meditation method from the nape of the neck to the sacrococcyx, following along the central line [ bottom portion of which is called governing vessel]. Use gentle force pressing from above to below. Repeat 3 times. Then use the 2 finger meditation method, pressing on both sides of the governing vessel. Repeat 3 times. Then use the 3 finger meditation method, pressing the vital point of the governing vessel on both sides. Repeat 3 times.

Getting rid of rash: The practitioner stands at top of the patient’s head or at his side, using both hands in the 4 finger meditation method, makes a fist horizontal to the body, follow along the governing vessel and its 2 sides, push from high to low, until the skin turns flush. [If the massage is done by a doctor or a professional masseur, you can go one step further and cause the skin to breakout in a rash].

In an awakened state: use the five finger meditation method, follow along the governing vessel and its two outside edges with a light touch. Repeat 3 times, with the amount of force going from relatively heavy to light, and the last time extremely light and gentle. Afterwards, allow the patient to rest quietly for a few minutes, covering the back with either a towel or a blanket, etc. The entire process can be accompanied by soft, gentle music, and the awakening stage can also be accompanied by Qi Gong. The third method is to reduce pressure to aid sleep [the simple and easy method]. The original method requires accompaniment by the hand massage method. The patient lies down facing upward, with the practitioner standing behind the patient’s head, 1.Relieve pressure: Use the index finger and one finger meditation method. Exert pressure on the pair of points on both sides of the tai yang acupuncture point, circle 60 times to the left, 60 times to the right; then use the thumbs of both hands starting from the front of the forehead yin tang, with the two finger bellies intersecting to move and press the forehead skin, from inside to outside, from bottom to top, moving to and fro 3 times; then use the middle finger belly of both hands, starting from the nose bridge near the eye area, follow along the entire eye socket with rolling pressure, 3 times; Then use both hands 4th finger bellies on both sides strumming as if playing the piano. Repeat 3 times. 2. In an awakened state: Use both hands supporting the back of the head, at the same time using finger strength to press the head, gradually extending to the entire head. Repeat 3 times. Finally, use the thumb, one finger meditation method to lightly support the bai hui acupuncture point, slightly vibrating the point for about 1 minute.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to move ahead one more step in your understanding, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #88

Form of Body and Spirit of Heart Regulate Together

Conso-heart Therapy, the 8th Consolidation

In the last chapter, we discussed the 7th consolidation among the conso-anti-cancer therapies, namely the conso-vital point method. This chapter deals with the last conso-therapy method, the 8th consolidation, the conso-heart therapy method also called the conso-heart and spirit release method.

The 8th consolidation: Conso-heart therapy method.

Before we begin, I would like to explain that I constantly receive a stream of mail seeking advice and engage in frequent phone call discussions, however due to the limited focus of each chapter, it isn’t possible to reflect these common concerns in a timely matter. Among them, some I have chosen to incorporate into my writing, some I have held back to answer together at the end of the book. However, now I would like to make an exception and respond to a question, since this involves someone who must immediately select suitable action. Mr. Wang from New York asks: I was just recently in San Francisco visiting relatives when I read your book A Hundred Chats on Chinese Medicine Fighting Cancer, and it just so happened that my younger cousin called from Taiwan telling me he was stricken with lung cancer and had heard people say that he should select the starvation method for treatment. He was preparing to stop eating foods and only drinking liquids for a period of time. After reading your chapter 87 concerning the concept of starvation as a dietary method, I was in complete agreement with your point of view. As I prepare to tell him to not to hastily select the starvation diet method, would you be able to give me even more convincing information to help persuade him not to take this course of action.

Answer: Yes, there is a medical experiment in which a group of rats with tumors were deprived food for 24 hours, and their tumors rapidly increased 2-4 times in size. After resuming their regular diet, the tumor growth went back to its original speed. Therefore, patients with tumors should not eat less or select the starvation therapy method. They need to maintain a normal diet and find a way to increase nutrition. For those patients with a poor appetite, they must exert their effort to whet their appetite so that they can eat.

Here I will refer to the so-called heart-spirit release which contains the double significance of psychological and spiritual release. Psychological release is release after knowing about the cancer; spiritual release the release from facing death after cancer. Since we are discussing the spiritual release from cancer, this necessarily involves whether or not the occurrence and development of cancer is related to psychological factors. In chapter # 1, I began to point out the changes of human emotions, and the fact that they are closely related to the onset and development of cancer. Which emotional factors are these? Human beings have 7 emotions; joy, anger, anxiety, longing, sorrow, fear, fright and anger. The feelings of anxiety, longing and sorrow are related to cancer.

Looking at the development of the Western model, the earliest is called the ‘biological model’, namely seeing the body as a single biological form. Later on, a ‘biological and psychological medicine model’ developed, which recognized the close relationship between the organism and its psychological factors. Going one step further is the promotion of the ‘biological, psychological, societal medicine model’.

What then is the Chinese medicine model? From ancient times to the present, Chinese medicinal science considers the human body as a ‘unity of form and spirit’. What exactly does that mean? Form, is the body, since it has physical shape; spirit, is the spiritual realm, the soul, because it is formless. ‘Unity of form and spirit’, expressed in modern terms is the so-called: ‘Medicinal science of body and mind’. In addition, more than 2000 years ago, in the fundamental writing of the Inner Classic of the Yellow Emperor, [Huang Di Nei Jing], the standard sought for high level doctors was: ‘Above, know the writings of heaven, below, know the principles of the earth, in the center, know the affairs of man.’ If we take the Chinese medicine principle of form and spirit unified into one, and combine it together with the quote above, then form is the physical body, spirit is the human spirit, affairs of man is human society, the writings of heaven and the principles of the earth are the natural world. Therefore, I advocate the proposal that the model for Chinese medicine should be: ‘biological, psychological, societal, natural medicine model’ , and I believe that in the future there will be a commonly developed model from Chinese and Western medicinal science.

Why the need to talk about all of this? It is my belief that cancer therapy and cure should seriously consider the ‘biological, psychological, societal, natural world medicine model’. Only in this way can the cancer patient’s spirit find release. And, why is that? The most salient feature of the biological, psychological, societal, natural world medicine model is to take the body and spiritual psyche, society and natural world and see their influence on the human body as one whole organic entity. This perspective breaks through the greatest barriers, and for cancer and all other difficult to cure illnesses, as well as for the health of all mankind, it will produce enormous benefits. Of course, here I will focus on the main topic of discussion, the spiritual release from cancer. Using the biological, psychological, societal, natural world medicine model to fight cancer will help achieve the cancer patient’s spiritual release. With concrete application of the conso-heart therapy method, you can make operational the health method for the emotional prevention of cancer that I introduced earlier. At the same time, for the cancer patient, it is critical to combine this with the 6 main methods below.

Number One: White cat or black cat method. One must take responsibility for one’s own body. For the cancer patient, whether Western medicine or Chinese medicine is used, if it cures the illness then it is good medicine; whether the cat is white or black, as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat. Don’t rely solely on your imagination, or on one sided words which negate the Chinese medicine therapy method. Before rejecting something that you really don’t understand, go to a genuine Chinese medicine professional for a chat [avoid charlatan practitioners], and this might open another bright window in your heart. Perhaps this is a gift from God, so make yourself knowledgeable about related topics and become informed.

Number Two: Self examination method for the cause of disease. Up to the present day, understanding the causes of cancer are still not unequivocal. Howeve, many carcinogenic factors are well known. After a definitive diagnosis of cancer, using the knowledge provided for you in this book, diligently analyze your own illness to figure out what were the related carcinogenic factors. Please carefully re-read chapters # 1-36, concerning the pathogenic analysis of cancer, and compare your own related illness factors. Moreover, use the conso-therapy methods provided in this book, including conso-prevention of cancer and conso-anti-cancer methods to select a strategy for self help therapy and combine it with medical methods.

Number Three: Psychological release method, in other words, the emotional equilibrium method. We have already discussed that among the multitude of pathogenic factors, Chinese medicine takes internal reasons as the fundamental impetus for change, and external reasons as the conditions under which change occurs. Internal reasons are emotions of which there are seven; external reasons stem from society and the natural world. Transforming nature depends on the diligent efforts of collective societal strength, however every individual is most capable of transforming himself. The highest priority for self transformation is regulation of our 7 emotions; joy, anger, anxiety, longing, sorrow, fear and fright. In doing so, we can reach a state of mental serenity like that of water. In the human body, past accumulation and present production of impulsiveness, uneasiness, anxiety and worry, nervousness, pressure, resentment, jealousy, fear, etc, all kinds of changes from the 7 emotions, are detrimental to our psychological health, and when we extricate ourselves from these emotions, then the psychological release can strengthen the natural defense against cancer cells inside the organism. Those who do not have cancer can avoid it, and those who already have it can reduce its severity to the point of full recovery.

Number Four: Spiritual release method. The mental attitudes of humans belong to outside layers of psychology, namely emotional changes. In addition, there are deeper layers which belong to spiritual changes. Changes of the spirit also have their external form, and that is manifested as faith. Back in 1990, I was chief editor of: Chinese Medicine Therapy Methods, the Complete Collection, the simplified character edition: Shandong Science and Technology Publications, and Taiwan Zhong Hua Shu Ju, the traditional character edition. In the 12th section of chapter #27 of the book, there is a specialized analysis of faith therapy. Faith can produce a super natural strength giving a person self confidence and hope, bringing a calm attitude toward death, reducing or completely eliminating the fear of death. This kind of release, or ultra-release definitely is not achievable by ordinary psychological therapy methods, therefore I term it spiritual release or psychological release on a spiritual level. At the same time, this kind of spiritual release provides an even greater opportunity to create a cancer cure and a recovery.

Number Five: Social power method. When a person is suffering from cancer, the encouragement and help from surrounding family and friends offers an enormous support to the spirit. Whether the support is spiritual, verbal, behavioral, financial, or through daily care, any aspect will touch the heart of the patient, arousing their courage to keep on living and the faith to defeat the illness. The cancer patient also should reflect back with sincerity at past times and try hard to get along with surrounding family, friends and colleagues with an understanding heart, with a tolerant heart to forgive others, and a positive heart to strengthen all relationships as well as establish new friendships. Friendship has an uncanny power to promote the cure of illness.

Number Six: Return back to nature. Having been stricken with cancer should further strengthen one’s love of the natural world; Mountains, water, chirping birds, fragrant flowers, placing oneself more fully in the embrace of nature, abundantly enjoying the richness of the natural world, and taking stimulation from the tireless pulse of nature to nourish the body’s own everlasting vitality. For spiritual release, this can be of the utmost help. The cancer patient’s final release is dependent on two factors; one is body’s release, in which case the cancer disappears, the second is when the body is struggling to release or simply cannot find a way to release, yet despite this the spirit is able to release. These 2 factors complement each other, the body release contributes to spiritual release, the spiritual release contributes to the body’s release. Chinese medicine calls this ‘Form and spirit unified as one’. How can this unification of form and spirit be achieved? In a word, it is by utilizing the biological, psychological, societal, natural world medicine model which is the essence of the conso-heart therapy method. In concrete application, it takes the health method of emotions which guard against cancer and organically combines them with the heart therapy method, one of the 6 main methods.

Dear Reader, this concludes our discussion of the conso-anti-cancer methods. Starting from the following chapter, we will introduce conso-anti-cancer clinical application. If you’d like to obtain even more information, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

To Regulate Body Constitution use Chinese Medicine

In the last chapter, we finished our discussion of the conso-anti-cancer method. We know that the consolidation methods include conso-cancer prevention methods and conso-anti-cancer methods. Conso-health plan primarily has 4 main methods: Emotional health, dietary health, life style health, and environmental health. The detailed content is presented in chapters#44 - 77. The conso-anti-cancer method primarily has 8 main therapies namely: Conso-#1 therapy, conso-health restoration soup therapy, conso-acupuncture method, conso-moxibustion method, conso-compress method, conso-dietary method, conso-vital point method and conso-heart therapy method. The detailed content appears in chapters# 77 - 88.

From the title of the book, A Hundred Chats on Chinese Medicine Against Cancer, you know that we still have 12 chapters left ahead of us to talk about Chinese medicine’s anti-cancer methods and its concrete application in all kinds of cancer, a deep concern to cancer patients, their families and friends. I will devote ten precious chapters for analysis on this; and in the final 2 chapters, I will take accumulated questions of common interest to synthesize explanations. Therefore, I welcome everyone to eagerly come forward asking questions.

Cancer in different locations, tissue and organs has different names, and added together there is a sum total of over 100 kinds. If I discuss them one at a time, then I’d probably have to change the title of my book to One Thousand Chats on Chinese Medicine Fighting Cancer. Therefore, I have selected to synthesize types and put emphasis on introducing methods, paying the utmost attention to the needs of cancer patients of all types.

Below I will discuss representative types of cancer starting from the head and neck, chest hypochondrium, abdomen, lymph, female cancers and bone cancers. Representative types of cancers will be divided up for review.

Number One: Head and neck cancer Types

1.  Nose and throat cancer: As the name indicates, these types of cancer occur in the nose and throat. However, to be precise, occurrence is at the top of the cavity and in its side walls. Looking at geographical distribution, it is found most commonly in Southeast Asia, with an especially high occurrence in China’s Southeastern region. As for age distribution, most occurrences are among people between 30-50 years old. As for gender distinction, there are more cases among men than women. Early stage symptoms of nose and throat cancer are atypical. In general, there is the emergence of a stuffy nose, bloody mucous from the nose [crucial symptoms], headache, ringing in the ear, etc. These are often mistaken as rhinitis, pollen symptoms, upper respiratory infection, etc. If these symptoms are accompanied by neck lymph swelling, feel as hard as stone, are set in place and not moveable, then this demands a high priority of diligent attention. The symptoms of a late stage nose and throat cancer can manifest itself as ear ringing, deafness, head pain, double vision, large amount of swelling in the neck lymph nodes, etc. indicating that the cancer cells have already invaded the craniocerebrum. If someone has the symptoms stated above, they should immediately seek out medical examination. Diagnosis of nose and throat cancer must include a microscopic examination of the nose and throat, an exfoliation examination of cells, a fluorescent examination, an X-ray examination, and a biopsy of neck lymph nodes, etc. Examination will reveal the outward signs of nose and throat cancer; evidence of ulcer, nodules, cauliflower-like mass, infiltration etc. Pathological biopsy will reveal many squamous cells, undifferentiated carcinoma, lymph epithelial cancer and spindle cell carcinoma. Looking at the cause of disease, nose and throat cancer is possibly related to heredity, viral infection, environmental factors, vitamin A deficiency, etc. As for treatment and cure, Western medicine first selects radiation, supplemented by chemotherapy. Based on my experience, Chinese medicine can encircle Western treatment and be used before, during and after Western protocol. In general, I do not advocate the sole selection of Chinese medicine for treatment but rather bring together the superior aspects of both Chinese and Western medicine. Analysis of nose and throat cancer from Chinese medicine theory indicates that the illness is expressed in the nose and throat but is coming from the nose qi passage to the lungs. The lung orifice is the nose, therefore pathological changes in the nose primarily will influence the function of the lungs. Because of this, in fighting nose and throat cancer, it should be considered from 3 angles: first, the pathological changes in the nose and throat area, second, pathological changes in the lung, third, the effect of nose, throat and lung illness on the tissues, organs and functions of the entire body. In concrete application, I plan 3 periods of therapy, one before radiation, one during and one after. These distinctions will be introduced below.

2.  [1] Before radiation: From our understanding of the 8 main principles of pathology in the conso-therapy method to fight cancer, the core of the pathology of nose and throat cancer is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, with the early period inclined toward lung heat, the appearance of bloody nose mucous or, morning’s first mouthful of phlegm carrying threads of blood. Also appearing are nose bleeds, stuffy nose, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, dizziness and fullness in the head. The tongue texture will be slightly red, tongue fur pale yellow, lung pulse with ascending fish border, fine or slightly rapid. In late stages, tendency is towards thermo-toxins, with the original site of illness pressing on surrounding organs and inserting infection into them. Going up, the infection turns to the base of the skull or cranial nerves, going down, infection moves into the neck lymph nodes. Manifestations include: Head pain or tendency toward head pain, visual power which is blurry or double vision, crooked tongue, eyes askance, neck lymph nodes large with swelling, nose stuffed up with thick, foul smelling mucous, a sense of agitation and insomnia, ears ringing and dizzy head, tongue texture red, tongue fur yellow and putrid, pulse slippery and rapid.

3.    Among the 8 major groupings to fight cancer, on principle the core of anti-nose and throat cancer is to quicken the blood and resolve toxins. In the early period, the lung-heat is inclined towards the exuberant stage, so emphasis is placed on clearing lung heat, resolving toxins; In the late period, thermo- toxins are inclined toward exuberance, so emphasis is placed on clearing heat and resolving toxins. At the same time, close attention must be paid to quickening the blood to fight cancer, and according to the concrete condition of each individual, implementation aimed at other aspects of the 8 pathological principles can be used to form a plan. An example of nose and throat cancer conso-therapy method prescription: Conso-#1, 3000 mg., Conso-#306, 3000 mg., divide into morning and evening doses and take after eating. In addition, with conditions where lung heat and thermo-toxins are inclined toward exuberance, select a conso-toxin resolving soup, and divide the focus of Chinese medicine between clearing lung heat and resolving toxins. In addition, allocate a prescription that aims at symptoms. Moreover, according to the actual condition of the patient, devise a conso-dietary plan and use other consolidation therapy methods.

During radiation treatment: Among our understanding of the 8 main pathologies in anti-cancer conso-therapy, after radiation treatment for nose and throat cancer, most common is the occurrence of yang vacuity and internal heat, for instance dry mouth, parched tongue, inclination toward cool drinks, mouth cavity with eroded sticky membrane, glossopharyngeum in pain or having difficulties, dizziness in the head, ringing in the ears, five hearts vexed and hot, or night sweats and constipation. Other symptoms include; short voiding of reddish urine, tongue texture tender and red, very little fluid, little or no tongue fur, or yellow, putrid tongue fur, pulse fine and rapid. Another condition is an inclination towards qi vacuity, which is primarily lung and spleen qi vacuity, manifested as fatigue and exhaustion, words spoken in a soft, barely audible voice, bland taste of food lacking flavor, loss of appetite, stomach bloated and nauseous, vacuous perspiration and fear of cold, sloppy and thin stool, clear and long urine, tongue texture pale white with teeth marks on the side edges, tongue fur white and slimy, soggy pulse.

Most important among the principles in the 8 main categories of anti-cancer prescriptions to be used during the radiation treatment stage for nose and throat cancer, is nourishing yin and clearing heat. For instance, qi vacuity must supplement the lung and spleen qi. At the same time, according to the concrete condition of each individual, implementation should be aimed at other aspects of the 8 main pathologies to devise a plan. Here is a sample of the nose and throat cancer conso-therapy formula: Conso-#1, 306A, 3000 mg.. #314, 3000 mg. divided doses to be taken morning and evening after eating. In addition, aiming at yin and qi vacuity which are inclined toward an exuberant condition, select conso-yin supplement soup, and conso-qi supplement soup as well as allocating a prescription which aims at symptoms. Moreover, depending on the condition of the patient, devise a conso-dietary plan and other conso-therapy methods.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to deepen your understanding further, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Thyroid Cancer and Brain Tumor

Chinese Herbal Medicine has Prescriptions to be Sought

In the last chapter, we discussed Chinese conso-therapy methods to be used before and during radiation treatment. Now we will continue with post-treatment questions. Then, we will move on to thyroid cancer and brain tumor.

Post radiation prescription model: American Precious Ling Zhi, 3000 mg, divide into two doses, morning and evening to be taken before meals with warm boiled water. In addition, Conso-#306, 3000 mg., divided into 2 doses after meals. At the same time, according to the body constitution, allocate a dietary therapy plan adding the 4 main conso-health methods, paying close attention to regular development of other conso-health restorative methods. Sample case: The patient, male, 46 years old, engineer, first diagnosed on March 6, 2000. Usually has nose allergies and one month ago, the left nostril became stuffed up and dripped blood. On the upper right side of the neck a lymph node 2 cm by 3 cm was felt, category 3 degree of hardness, degree of movement very poor. A Western pathological biopsy of the nose and throat area indicated: Poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, neck area lymph nodes found cancer cells. Diagnosis: Nose and throat cancer. Passed through cobalt radiation 25 times, [ 50 ge rui], In the process of radiation, manifested localized burn pain, dry mouth, parched tongue, low fever night sweats, tongue with little fur, pulse fine and rapid. The Chinese medicine diagnosis considers the nose and throat area to have entrenched blood stasis and thermo-toxins, with radiation therapy injuring yin and engendering fire. The principle of recuperation is to nourish yin and clear out heat, quicken the blood and resolve toxins. Prescription: Conso-yin supplement soup customized as; Asparagus tuber, 6g., ophiopogon tuber, 6g., adenophora root, 10g., Solomon’s seal rhizome, 10g., trichosanthes root, 6g., lily bulb, 15g., Chinese foxglove root, 15g., red peony root, 10g., cortex of tree peony root, 10g., charred atractylodes [white] rhizome, 10g., tangerine peel, 10g. Each day one preparation divided into two doses to be taken after meals. In addition, Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #306, 3000 mg., also advisable is to add lotus root, etc. into the dietary therapy method. Take preparation for one week, and all symptoms will greatly reduce, with success achieved by adjusting this formula based on increase or decrease of symptom changes. Throughout the whole radiation process, no longer will side effects occur. Following afterwards, the patient will then again receive chemo-therapy, still assisted by conso-therapy. After chemo-therapy, then regulate with Chinese medicine and dietary therapy. From his visit in June, 2003 until now, the patient has followed this protocol,is still healthy and has returned to work at his company.

2.  Thyroid cancer occurs commonly among women between 20-50 years old. It is relatively rare in men. Commonly seen pathology type models are mammilliform gland cancer and follicular adeno-carcinoma. Mammilliform gland cancer mostly occurs singly, as firm and tenacious, irregular, unclear borders, a mass with little movement, often accompanied by cystic change, easily metastasized into the lymph. Follicular adeno-carcinoma for the most part appears in tumor form either large or small, with a smooth, slippery surface, firm and tenacious, unclear borders, easily invades blood vessels and metastasizes by blood in many cases to the skull or lungs. Analyzing the pathogenic reasons and related factors are achieved by: Taking radioactive nuclein iodine, low iodine drink or radioactive rays leading to the thyroid tumor matter by shoot out to the thyroid and excising part of it. Chinese medicine in ancient times had the name ‘goiter tumor’, considering that the pathogeny is related to emotion, diet, lifestyle and environmental factors. Diagnosis of thyroid cancer can be done by inserting a thin needle to pierce into the cells to make a biopsy resulting in a definitive diagnosis. B Chao examination is helpful in determining the size of the thyroid tumor, and its relationship to surrounding tissue as well as the condition of surrounding lymph nodes. Aside from this, there is also radioactive nuclein examination and other methods, etc.

As for treatment, Western medicine uses surgery to excise it, as well as radiation treatment as the main methods, accompanied by chemo-therapy or endocrine therapy. Analyzed from Chinese medical theory, the thyroid pathological mechanism is primarily blood stasis and thermo-toxins, qi stagnation, water obstruction [ chiefly phlegm coagulation] from the thyroid. Therefore the key regulating aspect is dissipating stasis, resolving toxins, rectifying qi, transforming phlegm. Clinical experience shows evidence of: Tumor on one side or on both sides of the thyroid, firm and hard as a stone, sunken or protruding unevenly, with a tendency toward thermo-toxins leading to burning pain and constipation, red tongue with yellow fur, pulse slippery and fast. With a tendency toward qi stagnation, there will be stuffy chest and suppressed qi, agitation and anger easily aroused, tongue qualities: Dark and pale, tongue fur: Thick and greasy, pulse: Stringlike and fast. With a tendency toward phlegm coagulation, there will be coughing with plentiful phlegm, tongue qualities; Purple and dark, tongue fur; White and greasy, pulse; Bowstring and slippery. In addition, there is a kind of condition with a tendency toward yang vacuity, with symptoms of fatigue and lack of energy, spirit withered and scattered, fear of cold and cold extremities, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, perspire easily, intake very little, sloppy stool, tongue pale and dark purple, tongue fire white and slippery, pulse:; Sunken and fine.

Among the 8 main principles of cancer prescription groupings, the core method to fight thyroid cancer remains transforming stasis, resolving toxins. A tendency toward thermo-toxins requires laying emphasis on resolving toxins and dissipating binds. A tendency toward qi stagnation requires laying emphasis on breaking qi, dissipating binds. A tendency toward phlegm coagulation requires laying emphasis on cleansing phlegm, dissipating binds. A tendency toward yang vacuity requires laying emphasis on supplementing yang, dispersing binds. Coordinating radiation therapy, chemo-therapy and surgery principles and methods will appear in later, related chapters. Thyroid cancer conso-therapy sample prescription: Conso-#1, 3000mg, #307, 3000mg., divide into morning and evening doses to be taken after meals. In addition, to target thermo-toxins, qi stagnation, phlegm coagulation which tends towards a condition of exuberance, separately select conso-resolve toxin soup, conso-rectifying qi soup, conso-disinhibiting water soup, conso-supplementing yang soup, as well as mixing prescriptions which target symptoms. Moreover, according to the physical condition of the patient and the 8 main principles of pathology, devise a plan which utilizes conso-dietary therapy and other conso-therapy methods. Medical case example: female patient, 46 years old, accountant, in the summer of 2001, she felt something hard lodged in her throat and couldn’t swallow it nor expectorate it. During the night her chest was tight, suffocating breath, dry cough with no phlegm. Then medical examination determined that the right side of her thyroid was largely swollen, and finally the pathological diagnosis was thyroid gland cancer, with lymph node and lung metastasis. From September 9, 2001, when she was first diagnosed, examination of the right side thyroid was swollen as large as 4cm x 6cm, a hard mass, fixed in place, unclear borders, not following up and down with swallowing. In the upper area, several hard lymph nodes approximately 1cm x 2cm could be felt, with the right side of the thyroid feeling swollen and hard. A dry mouth with bitter taste, strained emotions, depressed and irritated, throat with burn pain, swallowing with difficulty, solid and dry stool, yellow colored urine, tongue: All red, tongue fur: Yellow, thick and dry, pulse; Slippery and rapid. Chinese medicine diagnosis considers that blood stasis, thermo-toxins were forcibly occupying the thyroid gland, replete with heat and internal binds, dry phlegm coagulated and clumped together. The regulating principle is to dissipate the stasis, resolve the toxins, cleanse the heat, chase out the phlegm. Use Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #307, 8000 mg., divided into 2 morning and evening doses, or follow with assisting conso-toxin resolving soup in one dose using: honeysuckle flower,15g., forsythia fruit, 10g., red peony root, 10g., glabrous greenbrier rhizome, 30g., woad root, 60g., cortex of the tree peony root, 10g., selfheal spike, 30g., ningpo figwort root, 15g., thunberg fritillaria bulb, 15g., kelp thallus, 30g., seaweed, 30g. Boil in water and divide into morning and evening doses after eating. At the same time, have the patient take a drink with 5 natural colors to expel toxins, use conso-acupuncture, conso-moxibustion and conso-compress therapy methods. After 5 days, when all the symptoms begin to subside, then confidence will greatly increase. After regulating with therapy for 6 months, all symptoms will basically be under control, the thyroid tumor no longer grows, the lymphatic swelling is greatly dispersed and eliminated, the right lung which originally had a yin shadow, disappeared. It was recommended to the patient to return to the Western doctor for appropriate surgery. The surgery was resection of the thyroid, followed by chemo-therapy, and during this period the patient continually using conso-therapy methods. The patient has now returned to work, maintaining use of conso-cancer prevention methods.

3.  Cerebroma: a summary term which includes several tens of types of intracranial tumors, with nerve glioma as the most, and others such as meningoma, hypophysoma, angioma, neurinoma, craniopharyngioma, danzhi liu, or metastasized tumor, etc. For certain diagnosis select methods such as; cerebrospinal fluid inspection, craniocerebral X-ray plain film, encephalogram, ultrasound, CT, nuclear magnetic resonance, angiography, immunologic test, etc. Clinical symptoms are of two types; one type involves cranial internal pressure increasing very high, manifesting in headaches, nausea, vision disturbance, and in addition head pain, dizziness, double vision, ear ringing, lethargy, epilepsy, mental symptoms, stiff neck, corneal reflex reduction, etc. Another type involves localized symptoms, such as tumor site at the occipital lobe, which will manifest in lateral and hemilateral blindness. If the site is the cerebellum, it will manifest in unsteady walking, and ataxia. If the site is frontal lobe, it will manifest as progressive mental retardation, personality changes, seizures. If the area behind the frontal lobe, precentral gyrus motor area of the cerebrum is under pressure, it will manifest as a tendency towards hemilateral paralysis. Consotherapy theory considers that the pathology of brain tumor core mechanism is the problem of blood stasis, thermo-toxins, forcibly occupying different intracranial sites, initiating different brain tumor problems. With a tendency toward blood stasis, symptoms seen will be piercing head pain, the painful site is immobile, face color is dark, tongue color is cyanosis, pulse sign is stringlike and rough. With a tendency toward exuberant phlegm, symptoms seen are head swelling pain, numb limbs, or hemiparalysis, tongue unyielding with no words, thoracic cavity with fullness and oppression, body is heavy with lassitude, coughing with lots of phlegm, tongue pale and purple, tongue fur white and slimy or yellow and slimy, pulse slippery and rough.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to delve deeper in your questioning, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.
