Throat Cancer, Carcinoma of the Tongue, Upper Jaw Cancer

Oral Medication, External Compress Both see Curative Effect

In the last chapter, we discussed brain tumor and related questions, This chapter will continue the discussion and then introduce other kinds of head and neck tumor cases for analysis.

Brain tumor with a clinical manifestation show a tendency toward blood stasis and tendency toward exuberant phlegm has been explained above. Now we will turn to conditions which tend toward yin vacuity and yang vacuity. Those with a tendency toward yin vacuity primarily have a liver-kidney yin vacuity with symptoms manifested as; Dizziness, blurred vision, ear ringing, deafness, dry mouth and pharynx parched, large and dry stool, five hearts vexed and hot, tidal heat night sweats, waist and knees sore and limp, tongue red with little fur, pulse: Sunken, fine and slightly rapid. Those with a tendency toward yang vacuity, primarily have kidney yang vacuity with symptoms manifested as; Dizziness, lack of strength, waist and knees cold and painful, fear of cold with cold limbs, soft barely audible speech, sloppy stool, urine clear and long, tongue pale and cold, tongue fur white with much liquid, pulse sunken and fine.

Among the 8 main principles of cancer prescriptions, the core method of fighting brain tumor remains transforming phlegm and resolving toxins. With a tendency toward blood stasis, emphasis is placed on quickening the blood and transforming the tumor. With a tendency toward exuberant phlegm, emphasis is placed on cleansing phlegm and transforming the tumor. With a tendency toward yin vacuity, emphasis is placed on supplementing yin, transforming the tumor. With a tendency toward yang vacuity, emphasis is placed on supplementing yang and transforming the tumor.

Sample conso-therapy prescription for brain tumor: Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #314, 3000 mg., divide into 2 doses to be taken morning and evening after meals. In addition, aiming at conditions of blood stasis, exuberant phlegm, yin vacuity, yang vacuity tendencies, divide up and select use of conso-blood quickening soup, conso-disinhibiting water soup, conso-supplementing yin soup, conso-supplementing yang soup as well as targeting symptoms to implement a prescription blend. Moreover, based on the 8 main pathologies of cancer and the physical condition of the patient, devise utilization of conso-dietary therapy and other conso-therapies. For brain tumor pressure on the nerves which initiates tendency toward paralysis, accompany with acupuncture therapy as the main thrust.

Sample medical case: Patient a 52 year old male, boss of tree association. By means of introduction, on March 16, 2002, he sent an email from Japan, for a long distance diagnosis. One year before, he had suffered dizziness and head pain, and having gone through nuclear magnetic resonance was diagnosed as having a brain tumor. He endured a half year of gamma dao therapy without any clear curative effect. Later on, he underwent surgery, with 80% removal of the tumor. However, not long after the surgery, his head pain intensified, both eyes drooped down, he had double vision, restricted eyeball movement, ringing ears, felt lethargic, right side limbs tended toward paralysis, words spoken with difficulty, corners of the mouth salivating. The local Chinese medicine association reported his tongue quality to be dark purple, tongue fur yellow and slimy, pulse, stringlike and slippery. Chinese medicine diagnosis considers this to be blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the inside of the brain, blood stasis exerting pressure on channels and vessels, heat and phlegm coagulating and gathering. The regulating principle is to dissipate the stasis and resolve the toxins, cleanse the phlegm and clear the heat. He used Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #314, 6000 mg., divided into morning and evening doses after meals. In addition, he used a conso-blood quickening soup to transform and reduce symptoms: Szechuan lovage root, 10g., safflower flower, 10g., turmeric tuber, 6g., bur-reed rhizome, 6mg., zedoary rhizome, 6g., salvia root, 6g., red peony root, 10g., Radicis Angelicae Sinensis, 10g., tabasheer, 6g., sweetflag rhizome, 6g., raw oyster shell, 30g., [first cook], then add notoginseng root powder, 3g., follow the soup with dose to flush down the medicine. In addition, I introduced a Japanese acupuncturist to implement acupuncture therapy. After taking the prescription for a month and a half, the dizziness and head pain reduced, the ear ringing and head pain were also reduced. The herbal prescription was adjusted with increases and decreases over an entire year, and as a result the head pain stopped, the double vision was reduced, the eyeball movement increased and strengthened, verbal ability improved and after acupuncture in Japan, the patient was able to move limbs, stand up straight and walk with a cane.

Throat cancer, tongue cancer, upper jaw and sinus cancer medical case examples:

[1] Throat cancer medical case analysis: Patient, a 49 year old woman, a professor, who came to Beijing from Anhui for first diagnosis. Two months previously, she had been diagnosed at the hospital as having throat cancer and went through 3 chemo-therapy treatments. Because of an overly strong response, she voluntarily stopped and turned toward Chinese medicine for diagnosis. According to a laryngoscopic examination report, the area was under pressure by a cauliflower shaped tumor and there was no way to clearly view the vocal chords. At that time, the throat area had burning pain, with no desire to speak, choking and coughing on food and drink, dizzy head and glaring eyes, agitated and unable to sleep, constipated stool, dry mouth and thirsty, with need to take frequent small sips of cool water. The patient was in extreme discomfort and completely discouraged, tongue quality was red throughout, tongue fur yellow, putrid and black, pulse string-like and rapid. Chinese medicine diagnosis considers this to be blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the throat, the gastro-intestinal system accumulating heat, and fire blazing between the lungs. The regulating principle is to quickly drain the vigorous fire, remove the firewood from the bottom of the cauldron. Conso-toxin resolving soup to transform and reduce symptoms: Honeysuckle flower, 15g., forsythia fruit, 10g., red peony root, 30g., glabrous greenbrier rhizome, 30g., woad root, 60g., cortex of tree peony root, 15g., root of the ballon flower, 6g., birthwort fruit, 15g., tendrilled fritillaria bulb, 10g., sophora root, 6g., whole scorpion, 3g., raw rhubarb root, 6g., [ground into powder and divided into soup doses]. Boil in water, 1 dose per day, divide into several frequent sips. In addition, take Conso-#1, and Conso-#306 each in 3000 mg., divide into 2 doses to be taken after breakfast and dinner. In addition, rhinoceros horn powder, antelope horn powder, cattle gallstone, borax, borneol, each 1g., ground together into fine powder, blowing a small amount on the affected area. After using the above prescription for 2 days, the patient was able to defecate a large quantity of dried, black stool. On the 5th day, the burning pain in the throat area was significantly reduced, moreover she was able to sleep peacefully. Repeated changing and adjusting over a period of 3 months, all symptoms were basically under control and she was able to ingest a semi-liquid diet. The patient was not willing to repeat examination, and carried back a 2 month supply back to her village. The following visit one year later, she was still taking herbs to regulate and already was able to return to a regular diet. Comment: throat cancer occupies 1-2% of the whole body with malignant tumor. Rate of occurrence is high among men. External appearance has nipple pattern, nodule pattern, ulcerated pattern. The pathology is divided into squamous cell carcinoma, occupying over 95%, and adenocarcinoma 1-2%, and sarcoma which is seldom seen. Illness site is divided into supraglottic region, glottis region, subglottic region, with the prognosis at the original site of glottis occurrence relatively good. Clinical studies show the voice to be hoarse, progressively more serious, throat section with a feeling of a foreign body sensation, swallowing discomfort, hypopharynx painful, or accompanied by a piercing cough, phlegm carrying blood, serious breathing difficulties, neck area mass. Research shows that 80-90% of patients have a history of smoking, moreover the year of illness occurrence 10 years earlier than non-smokers. In addition, drinking alcohol and long periods of contact with asbestos types which has harmful dust have a definitive connection. Looking from the perspective of Chinese medicine, the patient’s temperament is easy going, has a penchant for rich, sweet and strong flavors, and a body constitution which ordinarily tends towards heat, etc. Note: This example and other related medical cases, all used Chinese herbal medicine that meet United States FDA stipulations and regulations, following animal protection laws. In addition, all of the people involved are qualified doctors with experience in Beijing, and other places. These examples reflect the actual facts but are only intended as reference for the reader and should not be applied mechanically.

2.  Analysis of a medical case of carcinoma of the tongue: Patient, a 56 year old male, from Shenzhen who came to Beijing for diagnosis. A businessman who was first diagnosed on February 26, 1994. The body of the tongue was ulcerated on the left side for a long time and had not healed for over 6 months. A biopsy of the body of the tongue at a local hospital revealed a diagnosis of‘squamous cell carcinoma, 2nd stage. The patient refused surgery and radiation therapy and hoped to see a Chinese medicine doctor. When he came for diagnosis, the body of tongue on the left side was severely swollen, the front half area one could see 1x1.5 cm helcoid, margins, uneven protrusions and indentations, color was white with rotten quality, center was indented, sunken in about 0.5 cm., color was black-red. The tongue tip had burning pain. His heart was agitated and he was unable to sleep, mouth was thirsty and carried a foul smell, his head was dizzy, eyes were blurred, qi was in short supply, he was fatigued, torpid intake, emaciated thin, tongue quality red, tongue fur yellow, putrid and dry, his pulse was string-like, slippery and fast. Chinese medicine diagnosis considers this to be blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the tongue, the heart and stomach with exuberant fire, qi and yin both injured. The regulating principle is to dissipate the stasis, resolve the toxins, clear the heart and stomach, assist by nourishing yin and boosting qi. Conso-toxin resolving soup to transform and reduce symptoms: Honeysuckle flower, 10g., forsythia fruit, 6g., red peony root, 15g., glabrous greenbrier rhizome, 30g., woad root, 30g., cortex of tree peony root, 6g., Chinese foxglove root, 30g., lophatherum stem and leaves, 15g., akebia caulis, 6g., sophora root, cattle gallstone, 1g., [divided and rinsed], coptis rhizome powder, 3g., [divided and rinsed] . Boil in water and take a full dose every day, divided into morning, noon and evening doses after meals. In addition, use Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #306, 3000 mg., divided into morning and evening doses after meals. External prescription: rhinoceros horn, 1g., antelope horn, 1g., raw shanzhi, 3g., borneol, 1.5g., Indigo Pulverata Levis powder, 3g., alum, 1g.,pearl powder, 1g. Grind all finely together, divide doses frequent spreading on the ulcerated area. Patient’s response: after using medicine for 2 days, expelled out large mouthfuls of black pus and blood. After one week, tongue swelling clearly reduced, burning pain greatly decreased. Over a period of about one year, the pathological condition changed repeatedly and in the end came under control. The ulcerated surface of the tongue completely disappeared, followed by all the other symptoms. Advise to the patient to use ACT over the long term, and implement conso-cancer prevention methods. A follow-up visit in March, 2000, found the patient still in good health. Comment: Tongue cancer occupies first place in oral carcinoma, frequently occurring in people 50-70 years old, with an external appearance of papilla type, ulcerated type, infiltrated type, with the ulcerated type the most often seen. The pathology classification for the most part are squamous cell carcinoma, and a small number of adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma. Approximately 40% of the patients exhibit lymphonodi cervicales metastasis. The perspective of Chinese medicine toward tongue cancer has a similar name for the illness, called Tongue Gan. From Chinese medicine theory, the tongue is the sprout of the heart, and carcinoma of the tongue takes clearing the heart fire as its main principle.

3.   Medical case analysis of carcinoma of maxillary sinus: Patient, a 41 year old male engineer, first diagnosed on March 10, 2002. Ordinarily, he suffered nose allergies, and one year before, the right nostril had congested projection, and sometimes the right nostril would bleed, sometimes the right side would be inclined toward headache. A half year before, the right lower jaw bone was unbearably painful, the right eye protruded outward, and after going through biopsy, he was diagnosed as having maxillary sinus sticky liquid type of epithelial carcinoma. The patient hoped to coordinate radiation therapy with Chinese medicinal herbs. In addition to the symptoms above, he felt lethargic and fatigued, his waist and back were sore and painful, stool dry, red urine, tongue red, tongue fur white, thick interspersed with yellow, pulse string-like and slippery. He was diagnosed as having blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the maxillary sinus, gastro-intestinal system filled with damp heat and accumulated stagnation, central qi insufficient. The regulating principle is dissipate stasis, resolve toxins, clear heat, disinhibit dampness, supplement the core and boost qi. Use of Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #306, 3000 mg., divided into two doses to be taken after breakfast and dinner. In addition, conso-toxin resolving soup, conso-supplement qi soup, together with prescription to transform and reduce symptoms: forsythia fruit, 6g., red peony root, 15g., glabrous greenbrier rhizome, 30g., woad root, 30g., cortex of peony root, 6g., raw milk-vetch root, 15g., atractylodes [white] rhizome, 10g., sclerotium of tuckahoe, 10g., Chinese yam, 6g., cocklebur fruit, 6g., bugbane rhizome, 6g. External use prescription: Chinese gentian root, 3g., Indigo Pulverata Levis, 3g., raw shanzhi powder, 3g., grind together finely, use aloe leaf juice to mix in, take out an appropriate amount evenly spread out on gauze cloth, apply externally on protrusion over the eyes.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to know what the outcome was, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chinese and Western Therapies Combine to Treat Breast Cancer

Obstinate Lung Cancer also has a Prescription

In the last chapter, we discussed throat cancer, tongue cancer and carcinoma of maxillary sinus cases. Now we will continue with carcinoma of maxillary sinus and begin a discussion of sternocostal cancer types.

Word spread that a patient, before radiation treatment began, started taking conso-anti-cancer treasure and conso-toxin resolve in addition took qi supplement, and in one week saw improvement. Amazing! It already had some real effect. Especially the pain in the lower jaw was greatly reduced, appetite also increased, gradually and definitively maintained a coordinated Chinese medicine formula throughout radiation. During radiation, the patient took conso-anti-cancer treasure # 314, conso-qi complete soup, conso-yin supplement soup to change and reduce symptoms. Basically, there were no obvious side-effects from radiation. After radiation, the patient continued to recuperate for approximately one year and is in a stable condition.

Note: Carcinoma of maxillary sinus is most commonly seen as nasal sinus malignant tumor, more cases in men than women, with likely occurrence in the 40-60 age bracket. The pathology is divided into main types of; squamous carcinoma and other adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, malignant neurinoma, etc. It easily metastasizes into surrounding lymph nodes, with metastasis to far locations at only 2%, for example lungs or bones, etc. In general, it is discovered by unexplainable tooth pain, nose bleeds, chronic maxillary sinus inflammation which doesn’t heal for a long time. Men over 40 years old should be especially vigilant.

Number 2: Sternocostal part cancer types:

Mammary cancer; mammary cancer occurs in lobule of mammary gland and duct epithelium malignant tumor. Occurrence is highest in women, with occurrence in men occupying only 1%. Highest occurrence is in 40-60 year olds. Mammary cancer has 7 kinds of susceptible populations. 1. History of hyperplasia of mammary glands, nipple discharge, medical history of fibroadenoma of the breast; 2. Family history of breast cancer, especially before menopause on both breasts; 3. Menstruation beginning before the age of 12, with menopause occurring over 50 years old, or menstruation lasting over 36 years; 4. Women over 30 unmarried or married late in life, or after marriage didn’t have children, women of an older age who didn’t breast feed; 5. Women who in their youth received many X-ray examinations; 6. Women who in their youth or at the time of menopause were obese; 7. Those with an introverted personality, have depression and cheerlessness, or those with a history of mental upset.

The 7 danger signs of breast cancer are: 1. A tumor in the breast and in the area above is seen relatively often. Its quality is hard and firm, borders are unclear, irregular circular form or oval shape containing a mass. The largest number occur singly; 2. Women over 30 years old, within several weeks the breast can quickly enlarge, moreover accompanied by skin redness and swelling, moreover has an unexplainable inflammatory sign. Be on guard against inflammatory breast cancer; 3. The breast shrinks in size, nipple elevated. Be on guard against mastoscirrhus; 4. Nipple or areola of mamma site, occurrence of plum-like rotting ulcers, be on guard against eczematoid cancer; 5. Skin on the breast pulls in toward adductor, shrinks and indents, its shape change to dimple-like symptom or like an orange peel, many times indicate late stage breast cancer; 6. Nipple recurrently has bloody fluid, it is duct-type cancer. 7. The discovery of a swollen mass below the armpit, one should first consider the possibility of breast cancer in the lymph nodes which have metastasized.

The diagnosis of breast cancer primarily involves implementation of X-ray examination, nipple discharge smear, needle aspiration to look for cancer cells smear, biopsy of pathology examination, etc. As for divisions of pathology types, breast cancer can be divided into 2 main categories: one has a high degree of malignancy, such as scirrhoma, medullary carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer; the second is low degree of malignancy; such as papillary carcinoma, duct cancer, adenocarcinoma, eczematoid carcinoma of nipple, and lobule cancer. Clinical experience shows division between localized symptoms and whole body symptoms. In the early stages, localized symptoms are primarily the 7 danger signs explained above; in late stages, localized symptoms can, because of skin diabrosis, appear as turned over floriform. In the early stages, there is no pain, in the late stages the pain is relatively severe. Below the armpit and supraclavicular lymph nodes, due to metastasis, are then big with swelling. Whole body symptoms include emaciation, anemia, cachexia, etc. In Western medicine, surgical resection is the main treatment for early and middle stages, in combination with radiation therapy and chemotherapy as well as endocrinotherapy. In late stages, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and endocrinotherapy are the main focus. In ancient Chinese medicine, there are records of breast cancer and medicinal therapy experience. In the ancient books, breast cancer was called breast rock, breast gan, breast bi, etc. Chinese medicine considers:’ breast nipple belongs to the liver, breast belongs to the stomach’. Based on this we know that the liver and stomach are closely related to the the breast. In diagnosis and recuperation, there is full emphasis on the liver and stomach functions and their influence on breast cancer and the significant effect of regulation of their functions on breast cancer. We know that the core pathology of carcinosis is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, and breast cancer is no exception. The basis of blood stasis and thermo-toxins also has different degrees of pathological changes. In the early stages, the emphasis is on qi stagnation pathology, primarily qi stagnation of the liver and stomach, with symptoms seen as a mass in the breast, in many cases on one side, its nature rock hard with surrounding area either clear or unclear, the breast swollen and painful, with both sides full of swelling or swelling pain. Because of this, emotions are sparked and intensified, or premenstrual swelling pain is increased, menses is irregular, tongue nature is dark red, tongue fur is thin and yellow, pulse is string-like and fine. In the middle stage, the emphasis is on thermo-toxin pathology, symptoms seen as mass in the breast increasing in size, ulcerated and painful, cloudy liquid mixed with bloody water overflowing out both malodorous and foul, insomnia pain, flush face, red eyes, red tongue especially around the edges, tongue fur yellow and dry, pulse slippery and fast. In the late stages, the mass extends under the armpit, above and below the clavicle, as far as metastases occurring in the liver, lungs and skeleton, etc. Especially deep invasion in the pathology of blood stasis and thermo-toxins with both the qi and blood of the whole body injured, therefore accompanied by fatigue, lack of strength, absent-minded spirit, gradual emaciation, dizziness, blurry eyes, shortness of breath when moving, a fearful heart, insomnia, soft waist and knees, small quantity food intake, sloppy stool, spontaneous sweats and night sweats, toenails turned white, dry and a shriveled, pale tongue enlarged with teeth imprints on the edges, tongue fur is white and slippery, pulse is slippery and without strength.

The applied principle of conso-anti cancer method is to dissipate the stasis and resolve toxins as its main thrust. Based on qi stagnation or thermo-toxins, the two vacuities of qi and blood have different emphasis; coordinating the regulation of qi and blood, the clearing of heat, supplementing qi and blood, etc. In conditions where the tumor mass protrudes out at a localized site and is red, swollen, and ulcerated etc., the selection of using the conso-compress method can be considered for use. Moreover, based on differences in the patient’s selective use of surgery, radiation, chemo-therapy, etc., implement a coordinated regimen. As soon as radiation and chemo-therapy are completed, all aspects of conso-therapy methods should be increased and utilized to prevent revival of the dead cancer cells. In addition, it is recommended that women over 30 years old, or those who although young in age have a weak constitution with many illnesses, and especially those who have undergone mental upset, should all vigorously select preventive measures, with conso-preventive cancer method as an excellent choice.

Medical case: Patient, a 48 year old woman, clothes designer, of Chinese American descent, first diagnosed on January 26, 2002. Three years before, a lump was discovered in the right breast, without any symptoms whatsoever. She went through a biopsy and diagnosis revealed the right breast duct infiltrated with cancer. A radical surgery was performed in addition to radiation and long term doses of hormones. A half a year ago, it was discovered that the right side incision, next to the sternum had a prominent lump, approximately 2 cm. by 3 cm. One month later, the localized site at the chest wall had diabrosis, on the right supraclavicle a hollow was found with swollen lymph glands. This was diagnosed as a chest wall metastases tumor after breast cancer surgery. The patient hoped that before radiation, Chinese medicine would offer her some help. When she came for diagnosis, the chest wall had diabrosis with burning pain. The right arm was swollen with restricted movement. She was listless and without energy, dry mouth and thirsty, pain in swallowing, constipation, tongue fur thin and yellow, with a pale red nature, pulse was slippery and without strength. The diagnosis is in the category of blood stasis and thermo-toxins which have not be cleaned out ,qi and blood which is injured, yin vacuity and efflugent fire. The regulating principle is to dissipate stasis and resolve toxins, supplement qi and blood, enrich yin, bear down on fire. Use of Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #302, 3000 mg., divided into two doses, morning and evening were to be taken in warm, boiled water. In addition, conso-supplement soup for qi, blood and yin soup prescription to change and reduce symptoms with: raw milk-vetch root, 15g., atractylodes [green/white] each 6g., sclerotium of tuckahoe, 10g., Chinese yam, 6g., raw and processed fleeceflower root, each 6g., adenophora root, 10g., lily flower, 15g., rehmannia, 15g., Spina Gleditsiae Sinensis, 10g., hornet nest, 6g., pearl powder, 3g. Each day, one dose, cooked in water, divided to be taken morning and evening. In addition, add raw gardenia, 15g., cuttlefish bone, 10g., coptis rhizome, 6g., Indigo Pulverata Levis, 6g. ground together into fine powder, and using an appropriate amount of petrolatum to mix in, evenly spread out on a sterile gauze and applied externally on affected area, each day changing the medicine two times. In addition, conso-acupuncture and moxibustion therapy methods were utilized. After being used regularly for two weeks, the chest wall pain clearly diminished as well as the arm swelling. An obvious increase in appetite and physical strength was also apparent. After this, coordinated radiation therapy followed by recuperation for over a year at which time the chest wall diabrosis healed, lymph node swelling disappeared, the overall condition was very good and the patient prepared to enter the conso-preventive cancer stage.

Lung cancer: occurs in the bronchial sticky membrane, or lung vesicle wall. Many of these type of illnesses occur in people over 40 years old, with the ration of men to women, 5:1. There are 2 main pathological categories: one is non-small cell cancer, the other is small cell cancer.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to gather more information, then read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #93

Phlegm Stasis, Vacuous Water in Talking about Lung Cancer

Qi Stasis, Vacuous Water in Discussing Liver Cancer

In the last chapter, we discussed breast cancer and then began looking at lung cancer. Now we will continue discussing lung cancer and then move on to liver cancer.

Non-small cell cancer is more commonly seen than small cell cancer, moreover the growth and metastasis is even slower. Non-small cell cancer primarily includes 3 types which are divided into; squamous cell carcinoma [ also called epitheloid cell carcinoma], adenocarcinoma cancer and magnocell carcinoma.

Small cell lung cancer is also called oat-cell carcinoma and is not seen as often as non-small cell carcinoma. However, this type of lung cancer grows extremely quickly, moreover easily metastasizes to other organs in the body.

Looking from clinical experience, there is division between respiratory system symptoms and whole body symptoms. Among respiratory system symptoms, the first seen is coughing, for the most part paroxysmal or irritating hiccup cough, without phlegm or with a small quantity of sputum crudum. The second is hemoptysis, for the most part persistent or intermittent, repeatedly with small quantity of bloody phlegm, occasionally there will be a large hemoptysis. Third is chest pain, for the most part vague pain, if, in the course of illness it manifests as continuous megalgia, this oftentimes indicates pleura or chest wall metastasis. Fourth is shortness of breath, for the most part triggered by cancer swelling that obstructs or puts pressure on the large bronchi. The whole body symptoms are: Fever, exhaustion, thinness, anemia, torpid intake, etc.

Through the course of illness, there can also be the emergence of hoarseness from tumor pressure or invasion into adjoining tissue, head and upper limb swelling, greater supraclavicular fossa lymph node enlargement, thoracic cavity fluid accumulation [ hydrothorax], and in addition, because of brain, liver and bone metastasis, etc. different symptoms occur. There exists a definitive relationship with lung cancer and smoking, atmospheric pollution, some occupational factors [ such as asbestos, arsenic, chromium, tar pitch], certain radioactive materials, chronic lung disease, incomplete immune function, endocrine disorder and hereditary factors. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, in addition to the factors mentioned above, there is also the emotional factor, especially relevant is the emotion of grief.

Diagnosis of lung cancer must rely on X-ray, exfoliative, expectorative cytology, fiberbroncoscope, CT, etc. As for treatment, Western medicine focuses primarily on surgery, radiation ad chemotherapy. Chinese medicine’s understanding of lung cancer, from ancient times had the pathology name of ‘lung accumulation’ and ‘glomus aggregation’, analogous to modern lung cancer.

The perspective of conso-therapy utilizes an understanding of cancer pathology to implement treatment. The core of lung cancer pathology, still remains as ‘blood stasis, thermo-toxins’ which occupy the lungs and from this other pathological changes occur. Based on clinical summary, lung cancer is generally classified into 4 types; phlegm, stasis, vacuity and water.

With phlegm type lung cancer, the symptoms seen are coughing with abundant phlegm, phlegm color white or yellow, with a bubbly or sticky nature, chest is oppressed with pain, loss of appetite, sloppy stool, tongue characteristically pale and fat, with teeth mark edges. Those inclined toward cold-dampness, have tongue fur that is white and slimy, pulse is slippery and moderate. Those with an inclination toward hot-dampness, have tongue fur that is yellow and slimy, and pulse is slippery and rapid.

With stasis type lung cancer, symptoms seen are: Central chest pain, pain from a definitive spot, like a needle-piercing feeling, phlegm carrying blood, blood color which is dark red, lips, nails, tongue characteristics with dark purple color, tongue fur is thin or yellow, pulse is string-like and rough. Vacuity type lung cancer who those inclined toward yin vacuity show symptoms of: Coughing without phlegm or with a small amount, or phlegm which carries blood, blood color bright red, to the extent of coughing up blood non-stop, chest pain, mental vexation, low fever, night sweats, or high fever that won’t abate, thirst, constipation, tongue characteristically red, body of tongue thin and small, tongue fur scarce with yellow color, pulse fine and rapid. Those inclined toward yang vacuity, show symptoms of: Coughing with shortness of breath, clear and thin colored phlegm, dizziness, palpitations, fear of cold, chilled limbs, fatigue and lack of energy, absentminded spirit, tongue characteristics pale and fat, edges with teeth marks, tongue fur white and slippery, pulse sunken and fine. Those inclined toward both yin and yang vacuity, have mutually overlapping symptoms of vacuity.

Those with water type lung cancer have thoracic build up of fluid as an exhibiting sign, with a slow onset of illness, the quantity of accumulated fluid is small and can be symptom free. With a quick onset of illness, the accumulation of fluid quantity is moderate, with shortness of breath occurring with movement and palpitations. When a large quantity of fluid advances rapidly, obvious breathing difficulty emerge, oppressed chest, chest pain, palpitations, cyanosis, etc., moreover this can lead to the lungs not opening and therefore become infected.

Application of conso-therapy method principles takes dissipating stasis and resolving toxins as its core using: Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #303, 3000 mg., to be taken morning and evening after meals. At the same time, phlegm-type lung cancer, is assisted by cleansing phlegm to protect the lungs using conso-disinhibiting water soup, increasing quantity of transforming phlegm medicine. For stasis-type lung cancer, assist with blood quickening to protect the lungs, using conso-blood quickening soup. For vacuous-type lung cancer with yin vacuity, then use conso-yin supplement soup, and for yang vacuity, then use yang supplement soup. For those with both yin and yang vacuity, then use conso-supplement soup which combines supplementation for yin and yang soup in combined prescription. For water-type lung cancer, assist by expelling water to protect the lungs, use conso-disinhibiting water soup, increase disinhibiting water to expel water quantity. Based on the condition of illness and actual situation, use other conso-therapy methods with discretion.

Medical case example: Patient, a 58 year old male, retired professor, first diagnosed on November 22,1992. Three months before, he began coughing and the phlegm carried strands of blood, his chest was oppressed and had shortness of breath. After going through a hospital examination, it was discovered that the right side of his chest cavity had accumulated fluid, the chest water analysis showed adenocarcinoma cells, X-ray examination revealed right side hilum pulmonis had a round shaped parenchyma shadow, approximately 3 cm. by 4 cm. big, with irregular borders. After going through 5 chemotherapy treatments, he had serious dizziness and chest oppression which pressed down until vomiting food, numb fingers, white cells extremely low, etc, With no way to maintain, he had to discontinue treatment, and hoped that Chinese medicine would be able to help him. When he came for diagnosis, the symptoms seen were: Chest pain, a dry cough, small amount of phlegm that was difficult to come up. When it did come up it was mixed with blood, the blood color was bright red, agitation with a low fever, night sweats, thirst, constipation and urination with heat. His tongue was red with a thin form, tongue fur scarce with a yellow color, pulse fine and rapid. The condition was diagnosed with as blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the inside of the lungs. Chemotherapy injured internal fluids, yin was vacuous and fire efflugent. The regulating principle is to dissipate the stasis, resolve toxins, enrich yin, clear heat, cool the blood and stanch bleeding. Using Conso-#1, 5000 mg., #303, 3000 mg., to be taken morning and evening after meals. Assist with conso-supplement yin soup to transform and reduce: asparagus tuber, 6g., ophiopogon tuber, 6g., adenophora root, 10g., Solomon’s seal rhizome, 10g., trichosanthes root, 6g., lily bulb, 15g., roasted stemona root, 6g., roasted purple aster root, 6g., roasted birthwort fruit, 6g., roasted loquat leaf, 6g., agrimony, 10g. Each day one dose cooked in water, divided into morning and evening dose after meals. In addition, notoginseng root, 3 g., ground into powder and swallowed after the soup. Diet therapy instructions are lotus root crushed into juice or accompanying vegetables lightly stir-fried. After the above recipe was used for one week, the coughing of blood was clearly reduced. According to the principle of ‘accompany the earth brings forth gold’, add appropriate amount of hyacinth bean, Chinese yam and sclerotium of tuckahoe types. Back and forth, adjusting therapy for a half year, all symptoms were basically under control. Going through a CT scan, verified the tumor already shrunk down to a size of 1 cm. by 2 cm. Once again maintaining adjustments for a year, the lung cancer shadow was already no longer clear. After this, he was instructed to take ACT for the long term, maintaining development of conso-nurturing skill. Follow-up visit in 2002, found the patient still in good health.

Liver cancer: Liver cancer is divided into two types; primary and secondary types. Primary type refers to occurrence of malignant tumor in the liver organ, secondary indicates metastasized cancer. Liver cancer has high occurrence in 30-49 year old age group, with male to female ratio, 3:1. Liver cancer has the appellation of ‘Cancer King’, describing the quick development of illness and relatively poor treatment results and high death rate. The forms of liver cancer can be divided into massive type, nodular type, diffuse type. From pathology types, liver cancer can be divided into hepatocellular liver cancer, cholangiccarcinoma of liver, and mixed type liver cancer. In diagnosis, blood serum a-fetoprotein is detected in approximately 70% of patients who have elevated amounts in the early period, for liver cancer diagnosis reaches a rate over 90%. In addition, there is B-chao, CT scan, X-ray and liver blood vessels contrast, diagnostics. As for the cause of disease, liver cancer can possibly be closely related to viral type hepatitis, cirrhosis of liver, aflatoxin, nitrosamines, azobenzene type compounds, malnutrition, heredity and other factors. Chinese medical science considers that the formation of liver cancer is closely related to the emotion of anger. As for the symptom aspect, in the majority of cases, there are no obvious symptoms in the early stages, in general a physical exam predictably discovers a-fetoprotein. Some patients, at one time had a history of secondary hepatic disease, cirrhosis of liver, hepatalgia, abdominal distension, etc. After the middle period, many symptoms emerge, such as: Hepatalgia, swelling of the liver, abdominal distension, reduced intake, fatigue and thinness, sloppy stool, fever or jaundice, ascitic fluid, etc. As for treatment, Western medicine primarily relies on surgery in the early stages of liver cancer to remove it. In the middle and late stages, radiation, chemo-therapy as well as hepatic artery embolism therapy are the primary thrust, and in addition there are: Hhepatic artery intubation, medicinal perfusion therapy, cold therapy and immunotherapy, etc.

Conso-therapy utilizes Chinese medicine theories in its understanding of liver cancer, making concrete use of 4 terms which sum it up: ‘Qi, stasis, vacuity and water’. Qi: Refers to qi stagnation, stasis: Refers to blood stasis, vacuity: Refers to detrimental vacuity, water: Refers to water accumulation. These are also divided into 4 clinical types; qi stagnation type liver cancer, blood stasis type liver cancer, detrimental vacuity type liver cancer and water accumulation type liver cancer.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to clarify the details, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #94

After 10 Years, Able to Renew Life from Liver Cancer

Pancreatic and Esophageal Cancers can be Cured

In the last chapter, we concluded our discussion of lung cancer and began to look at liver cancer. This chapter will continue our discussion of liver cancer and then analyze medical cases of pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer and cardiac cancer.

Qi stagnation type liver cancer, see symptoms of: Both sides of the chest full of swollen pain, gastric cavity with dyspepsia and swelling, belching, pantothenic acid, nausea, reduced intake, sloppy stool, lack of energy, mental state depressed or easily angered with both symptoms of depression and anger increasing in intensity. Tongue character is dark or purple, tongue fur thin, white or thin yellow, pulse stringlike. Blood stasis form of liver cancer, sees symptoms of :Piercing pain in hypochondriac region, pain in distinct areas, perhaps increasing in intensity at night. Lower right costal region has palpitation and tumor, liver palms, spider nevi, emaciated with bloated abdomen, reduced intake, or food intake with difficulty, face color darkened, tongue character purple and dim, or with purple spots, tongue fur white or yellow or thick, pulse is string-like and rough.

Vacuity harming type liver cancer, inclined toward qi vacuity; primarily with weak spleen qi, with symptoms seen as: Spirit fatigue, lacking energy, low appetite and thin body, abdomen full with bloating, feeling of pressure and heat, both flanks painful, abdominal diarrhea, tongue character pale and fat with teeth marks, tongue fur white and slippery, pulse soggy.

For those with an inclination toward yin vacuity; there is primarily liver and spleen vacuity, symptoms seen are: Both flanks with dull pain, dizzy head, blurry eyes, waist pain, limp thighs, little food intake, thin body, five hearts vexed and hot, low heat and night sweats, dry mouth and stool, urination yellow or red, tongue red with little liquid, tongue fur: Sparse, yellow and dry, pulse: stringlike, fine and slightly rapid. Water accumulation type liver cancer sees symptoms of: Flanks painful with glomus lump, abdomen swollen with water or at the same time limbs with superficial swelling. For those inclined toward replete heat, these symptoms may be seen: Yellow jaundice, fever, heart vexed and easily angered, itchy skin, bitterness in the mouth and dryness when swallowing, dry stool and red urine, tongue red, tongue fur yellow and slimy, pulse: Stringlike, slippery and fast. For those with inclination toward cold vacuity, then these symptoms may be seen: Fear of cold and chilled limbs, desire for warmth and heat, tongue pale, tongue fur white and slimy, pulse stringlike and slippery.

The regulation of liver cancer by consotherapy is based on cancer’s core pathology of stasis and toxins, summarized above into 4 main types, and in addition is based on identifying theories upon which treatment is based. Because of this, the 4 types all need to use Conso-#1 and # 301, generally speaking in a dose of 3000 mg. each, divided into morning and evening doses to be taken before meals. Fundamentally, this is coordinated with conso-health restorative soup. Qi stagnation type liver cancer, coordinates with conso-qi rectifying soup with appropriate adjustments. Blood stasis type liver cancer, coordinates with conso-blood quickening soup with appropriate adjustments. Vacuous injured type liver cancer with a tendency toward qi vacuity coordinates with conso-qi supplement soup with appropriate adjustments. A tendency toward yin vacuity coordinates with yin supplement soup adjusted accordingly. Water accumulation type liver cancer, with a tendency toward replete heat uses conso-disinhibiting water soup together with conso-toxin resolving soup adjusted accordingly. A tendency toward vacuous cold uses conso-disinhibiting water soup in conjunction with conso-yang supplement soup adjusted accordingly.

Medical case: A 46 year old male patient, a writer, first diagnosed on March 10,1993. Ten years ago, because of lack of appetite, low intake, fatigue and lack of energy, the patient was examined for liver function damage, diagnosed with hepatitis type B , passed through therapy to remove symptoms, however had an Au reaction from beginning to end with yang type response. Over the last ten years, his health hasn’t been particularly troublesome, however a year ago, due to personal reasons, his spirit became depressed and joyless. An alcoholic addiction returned, and a half year later pain emerged on the upper right side of the abdomen. He became thin, food intake reduced, spirit was exhausted and lacking energy. After a hospital examination, laboratory AFP was positive, electrophoresis AFP less than 1 milliliter, going one step further, the blood biochemistry and B of special grade etc. in examination, with diagnosis as the original liver cancer. Moreover, the illness already occupied a size of 10 cm. in the liver. Recognizing that life was bordering on the edge, he was unwilling to once again accept injurious therapy. He then resigned from his job, travelled all around seeking a famous Chinese doctor. Examination showed that his liver was swollen below the large flanks by 5 cm., below the xiphoid process 8 cm., with a hard nature, on the surface showing uneven indentation and protrusion, and was painful to a light touch. He felt that both flanks at times emitted shooting pain, he felt depressed, ate little, had sloppy stool, a withered spirit, darkened face color, dark purple tongue with ecchymosis, tongue fur: Yellow, thick and dry, pulse very stringlike. According to conso-therapy theory, this is categorized as blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the liver. As a blood stasis form of liver cancer, there is spleen and stomach qi vacuity. However, the spirit of the patient was still strong, with a very powerful hope to continue to live. Using Conso-#1 5000 mg. #301, 4000 mg., taken morning and evening in divided doses on an empty stomach, in addition he took conso-rejuvenating health soup, and conso-blood quickening soup as well as conso-qi supplement soup together with changes and adjustments: Szechuan lovage root, 10g., safflower flower, 10g., turmeric tuber, 6g., bur-reed rhizome, 6g., salvia root, 6g., pseudostellaria, 30g., atractylodes, 10g., finger citron fruit, 10g., stem of perilla fruit, 15g., tangerine peel, 15g. Boil in water and take morning and evening on an empty stomach in divided doses. In addition use the conso-ointment therapy method: vinegar roasted soft-shelled turtle, 100g., Eupolyphaga sinensis insect, 100g., whole scorpion, 50g., centipede, 50g., white alum, 30g., borneol, 30g. Grind together into powder, mix in water and apply externally. In addition, give conso-cancer prevention method information, urging emphasis on evolving morale toward preventing cancer health method as well as conso-restorative merit method, and abstinence from alcohol. The patient asked the time frame for therapy, my answer was 10 years. After this, I regulated using the methods above [during which time external ointment method was used for 3 months], and the 8 years that followed, we basically communicated through correspondence. The patient, surprisingly persevered for 10 years. Not long ago, a CT scan verified that there were 2 peanut sized tumors still in the liver. He has already embarked on his second decade of course of treatment.

Below is medical case analysis of thoracic and hypochondrium areas of cancer.

Pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, cardia cancer [ the upper orifice of the stomach]

1.  Pancreatic cancer medical case analysis: The patient, a 56 year old male, first diagnosed on February 16, 2002. Three years before, had abdominal swelling, belching, lack of appetite. He was treated for chronic gastritis on the Chinese mainland at a hospital in Jilin province. His medical condition stabilized, however still had stomach discomfort, mostly suffering from swelling, and occasional concealed pain. Because the symptoms were relatively light, and didn’t occur on a daily basis, he didn’t pay much attention to it nor did he seek out treatment and came to the U.S. to develop his career 2 years ago. One month ago, suddenly he felt severe pain in upper abdomen, and a recurrent emergence of whole body jaundice occurred, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. He vomited up yellow and green water, and quickly went to the hospital. Laboratory tests showed that the jaundice indicated several liver functions all had abnormalities. Going through a CT scan, with pancreas and gallbladder organ contrast etc., he was diagnosed with head of pancreas cancer. The patient stated that because his hospital health insurance was not yet set up, he took a conservative therapy treatment for jaundice which then subsided, symptoms lightened, finally he decided to come out of the hospital. Through an introduction, he came to the Ai Kai Er Chinese Hospital to understand how conso-therapy methods could potentially help his medical condition. At that time, he was emotionally depleted, thin and lacking energy, hungry and yet unable to eat, eating and then feeling nauseous, speaking in a low, weak voice, moaning now and then, with abdominal bloating, constipation for several days without a bowel movement, and urinating yellow urine. Upon examination, the upper abdomen enveloped a lump, hard and resistant to pressure, the tongue nature was dark red, tongue fur yellow and thick, pulse stringlike and slippery. These symptoms belong to blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the pancreas, middle burner with humid heat, yang qi depressed and blocked. The regulating principle is to disperse the stasis, resolve the toxins, and at the same time, implement dispersion of humid heat, opening passage of yang to reach the outside. This requires use of Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #301, 3000 mg., divided into morning and evening doses to be taken before meals. In addition, conso-disinhibiting water soup to regulate and adjust: Polyporus sclerotium, 10g., sclerotium of tuckahoe, 10g., water plantain rhizome, 6g., akebia caulis, 6g., seeds of Job’s tears, 15g., atractylodes [ white] rhizome, 10g., [Saigon] cinnamon twig, 6g., tangerine peel, 10g., roasted Si Xian Ge, stir fried radish seed, 6g., chicken gizzard’s internal lining, 6g. Boil in water and take as one day’s portion, divided into morning and evening dose before meals. In addition, rotation of conso-acupuncture and conso-moxibustion was used. After one week, the patient’s stool was moving, the abdominal swelling was somewhat decreased, food intake was slightly increased. After 3 months of regulation, the symptoms were basically under control, and his spirit was clearly enhanced. Continuing regulation for 6 more months, the condition of illness continued to take on a stable appearance. The patient decided to return to his homeland, and up to the present still maintains communication in order to rejuvenate his health. Note: Generally speaking, in people over 40 years old, if they evidence weight loss, painful upper abdomen, with the onset of jaundice, swollen, big, gall bladder etc. then be vigilant to the possibility of pancreatic cancer. One third of patients have anemia and at times the blood serum amylolytic enzyme can increase. When the islets of pancreas break open, blood sugar can rise up. Liver function can have many abnormalities, and blood sedimentation can increase in speed. Diagnosis oftentimes is a combination of CT and X-ray, ultrasound laminogram scan, pancreas and gallbladder with contrast, etc. Modern medical statistics show that treatment for pancreatic cancer is relatively difficult, with the difference between before and after summed up that only 5% lived past 5 years. Use of Chinese medicine helps patients lessen their pain and suffering, raise their quality of life, extend their life span by weeks, and in some cases can possibly reach a cure.

 2. Esophageal cancer medical case analysis: The patient, a 52 year old male, accountant, first diagnosed on June 12, 1988. Ordinarily, he had enjoyed good health, however almost every night stayed up very late, enjoyed eating a hot and spicy diet, ingested his food quickly. One month ago, he felt some difficulty in swallowing food. The local doctor thought that possibly it was a series of laryngopharyngtis, but having gone through anti-inflammatory therapy was ineffective, the symptoms continued to increase in intensity, and at the time of diagnosis he was only able to eat semi-fluid food, and had great difficulty swallowing. He progressively lost weight, his chest was oppressed and stool was sloppy, tongue character was dark purple, tongue fur was white, slippery and blotchy, pulse string-like and slippery. He went through a gastrofiberscope examination, and discovered the esophageal clavicle plane surface showed ulcerated change of about 5cm., and appeared to have cauliflower-like changes. Pathological biopsy proved it to be squamous carcinoma. Diagnosis from Chinese medicine considers this to be blood stasis and thermo-toxins to be forcibly occupying the esophagus, with spleen and stomach qi vacuous, damp, turbid, and spreading unchecked. The regulating principle is to disperse the stasis, resolve the toxins, warm the spleen, dissipate the cold, transform the dampness and expel the turbidity. Using conso-yang supplement soup to transform and adjust: Codonopsis root, 10g., atractylodes [white] rhizome, 10g., glabrous greenbrier rhizome, 30g., Chinese yam, 6g., pinellia rhizome, 6g., Hua red part of tangerine peel, 10g., white mustard seed, 10g., tendrilled fritillaria bulb, 10g., seeds of Job’s tears Ge, 15g., Fructus Citri Aurantii [ ripe fruit of bitter orange], 10g., tangerine stem, 6g. Use Conso-#1 and #301 each 5000 mg., to include in decoction, boil in water, each day taking a full dose divided into 10 portions taken at a leisurely pace, accompanied by conso-acupuncture, moxibustion and conso-restorative health merit, etc. Altogether, adding, subtracting and changing, he passed through one year of therapy and the patient’s medical condition stabilized. In a gastroscopic examination of the esophagus, the ulcerated surface already shrunk down to 1 cm., the cauliflower-like changes had clearly been eliminated, and a pathological biopsy did not see any cancer cells. The therapy has continued for the past 2 years with a stable medical condition. Dear Reader, if you’d like to gain more understanding, then please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #95

Stomach Cancer has 4 Types

Qi, Dampness, Stagnation, Vacuity all have their Differences

In the last chapter we discussed liver cancer and introduced medical cases of pancreatic and esophageal cancers. This chapter will first continue with comments on the esophageal cancer medical case and then introduce a cardia medical case and move on to a discussion of cancers in the abdominal region.

Note: For the most part, cases of esophageal cancer occur in people over 40 years old, more among males than females. Pathological types are divided into; squamous carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, carcinosarcoma, etc. Pathological causes are primarily related to diet, nutrition, life environment and heredity. Surgery is a relatively effective treatment in the early stages, with 90% survival rates possibly reaching as long as 5 years. However, in the late stages occurring in the upper segment and positioned on the aortic arch in the middle section, these medical cases are not appropriate for surgery and oftentimes select radiation therapy. Chinese medicine’s understanding of esophageal cancer over a long period of time is illustrated by one of the ancient 4 main obstinate symptoms; Wwind, consumption, drum, occlusion, either [ wind stroke, lung consumption, drum distention, dysphagia]. Occlusion primarily points to the esophagus, cardia and stomach cancer, etc. and because of this, Chinese medicinal science has a wealth of experience accumulated toward therapies.

Cardia cancer medical case analysis: Patient, a 55 year old female, farmer, first diagnosed on October 10, 1990. Three months ago she had undergone a radical surgery for cardia cancer in which her stomach was removed, esophagus, jejunum terminated lateral anastomosis etc. Pathology report said that the cardia cancer was second stage, invaded deeply into the muscle layers, and in one place metastasis was discovered in the lymph glands. At the time of diagnosis, her body was very thin, her spirit was unsettled, torpid intake, dry stool, thirsty mouth and drinking often. When the abdomen was swollen, it was painful, tongue red with little tongue fur, pulse was fine. After surgery, both qi and blood were greatly damaged and yin exhausted with injury. Treatment taken was to nourish yin, clear out heat, supplement qi, nourish the blood, in order to prevent cancer recurrence. Having been given conso-potential stimulating element, each day divided into 2 doses, morning and evening following conso-yin nourishing soup taken fully soaked. The conso-nourishing Yin soup was regulated and adjusted accordingly: Asparagus tuber, 6g., opiopogon tuber, 6g., adenophora root, 10g., Solomon’s seal rhizome,10g., trichosanthes root, 6g., lily bulb, 15g., sclerotium of tuckahoe, 10g., Chinese yam, roasted fleeceflower root, each 6g., fleshy stem of the broomrape, 6g., finger citron fruit, 6g. Boil in water and take in one day divided into 6 doses on an empty stomach. After regulating with therapy for one year, the patient’s medical condition stabilized, then reaching normalcy. At this point, she took only conso-potential stimulating element and each month taking a one week prescription for conso-nourishing yin soup to regulate and adjust accordingly. Following up on a return visit after 5 years, she declared that for the entire time her body had been in a basically healthy condition, though there was still weakness and vacuity which caused her to fatigue easily. Her stomach and intestine X-ray film shown that both the surgical openings were normal. Note: Cardia is the upper opening of the stomach, the lower segment connected to the esophagus. This example is a medical case regulated after surgery. Chinese medicine considers that after cancer surgery, qi and blood to a greater or lesser degree, have a definitive amount of damage. Because of this, it is extremely important to take care of the body for recuperation after surgery, in order to prevent the cancer from recurring and metastasizing. This requires serious attention.

Number Three: Stomach Duct-Abdominal Cancer Types:

1.  Stomach cancer: Is often seen as digestive tract tumor, with occurrence among men four times higher than that of women, with high degree of occurrence in the 40-60 year age range. Pathological types include: adenocarcinoma, zhan ye cancer [zhan ye glandular cancer], solid adenocarcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, etc. The pathological reason for stomach cancer can possibly have chronic gastropathy factors such as: Atrophic gastritis, gastric ulcer, stomach polyp, etc., as well as dietary factors such as; Foods that have latent carcinogenic material in smoked foods, foods containing nitrite which have enzyme change, etc. In addition there are heredity and environmental factors. Chinese medicine also especially emphasizes the relationship of the emotional factor, particularly that of anger [ feeling of oppressive qi with easy eruptions of a fiery temperament] as well as anxious thoughts which have accumulated over a long period of time. Diagnosis of stomach cancer primarily uses: Gastrofiberscope to do a pathological biopsy, Chong shua, suction of exfoliative cytologic examination, stomach tube irrigation or air pocket abrasion method to take a stomach fluid specimen to implement an exfoliating cell examination. X-ray examination, etc. is done as well. Looking at symptoms, in general what is often seen is: Distended glomus, gastric discomfort with acid regurgitation or pain which intensifies after eating or on an empty stomach, followed by a medical condition which develops with intensified pain which can shoot out from the waist or back area. Other symptoms are: Torpid intake, lack of energy, belching pantothenic acid, thinned body shape, etc. In late stages: Cachexia, low fever, left supraclavicle lymph nodes swollen large, epigastrium palpitation and tumor, even to the point of emerging ascetic fluid, etc. can be seen. For example, occurrence of cancer in the upper opening of the stomach, the cardia, or in the stomach lower opening, the pylorus, can trigger blockage symptoms. Ulcerated stomach cancer types have the appearance of stomach ulcers, for instance: Hunger pain, pain at night and pantothenic acid. Polyp type stomach cancer bleeds easily. Looking from the perspective of treatment, Western medicine primarily uses surgery and chemotherapy, with surgery as the first choice. Use of Chinese medicine’s conso-therapy method is primarily based on the core pathology of cancer which is blood stasis, thermo-toxins and the development of pathology types which then need regulation. Reports from clinical experience divide these primarily into four main categories; qi, dampness, stasis and vacuity.

Qi stagnation type stomach cancer is inclined toward stomach qi being stagnant and blocked, with symptoms seen as: Stomach duct glomus swelling or oppression, stomach clamoring, belching, stale and putrid nausea with upset stomach, and vomiting clear or sour water. In addition, after eating there is a heavy feeling, dark red tongue, with tongue fur thick and turbid, stomach pulse: String-like, slippery, floating or turning like a snake.

Those inclined toward liver qi stagnation and blockage basically have the above symptoms, and also seen are: The two flanks swollen and all kinds of symptoms resulting from emotional changes, especially from anger which induces and aggravates both conditions of oppressive qi easily arousing a fiery temper, with the liver pulse emerging: String-like, slippery and floating.

Damp congestion type stomach cancer sees symptoms of: Chest and stomach duct full of oppression, body heaviness, torpid intake, aversion to foods that are fatty or sweet, inundated with vomiting sticky phlegm, regurgitating the evening meal, abdomen bloating, sloppy stool, tongue character fat and big with edges showing teeth marks. Those inclined toward cold dampness have tongue fur which is white and slimy with a string-like, slippery pulse. Those inclined toward damp heat have tongue fur that is: Yellow, slimy, slippery, with rapid pulse.

Blood stagnation type stomach cancer shows symptoms of: Stomach duct with piercing pain, with pain in definitive places becoming more severe at night or possibly palpitating, having a tumor, stool as dark as pitch, vomiting coffee colored blood, full abdomen with no desire to eat, tongue nature dark purple or showing green-blue sinews, having stasis speckles or stasis macules, tongue fur that is: Thin, white or thick, and pulse is rough.

Vacuous damage type stomach cancer is inclined towards stomach yin insufficiency with symptoms seen as; Stomach duct burning pain, dry mouth and thirst, swallowing dry and stool dry, tongue body thin and small, tongue body color red, tongue fur sparse, pulse fine and rapid.

Those inclined toward insufficient stomach yang, see symptoms of: Stomach duct with dull pain, finding relief from pressing and staying in darkness. Encountering cold exacerbates the condition, morning meal is vomited at night, evening meal is vomited in the morning, all the grains are undigested, inundated with vomiting clear water, face color withered and yellow, sloppy and thin stool, tongue nature pale and dark, tongue fur thin and white, pulse sunken and moderate or fine and weak. As for the regulating aspect, originally one must still take aim at the core pathology cancer: Blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implementing dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins with a prescription for the original Conso-#1, 3000mg., # 304, 3000mg., divided into two doses morning and evening to be taken after meals.

Basically, qi stagnation type stomach cancer coordinates with use of conso-rectifying qi soup to change and adjust accordingly. Damp-congestion type stomach cancer coordinates with use of conso-disinhibiting water soup to change and adjust accordingly. Stagnation of blood type stomach cancer is coordinated with use of conso-blood quickening soup to change and adjust accordingly. Vacuous injured type stomach cancer is coordinated with use of conso-yin supplement soup and yang supplement soup to change and adjust accordingly.

Medical case example: The patient, a 52 year old woman, pediatrician, first diagnosed on December 6, 1995. One month ago, because the diagnosis of gastric antrum cancer, surgery was performed, however after opening the abdomen, a tumor was discovered which was already an extensive adhesion with no means of eradication through surgery. Only through the pylorus, an attempt was made to do a palliative excision to prevent blockage. After over 20 days in the hospital, it was considered incurable and she was released. When she came to me for diagnosis, her symptoms were abdominal pain that would not subside, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Her face color was withered and yellow, her spirit was listless, she was extremely weak and only ate a small quantity of liquid diet. Her tongue was light purple with static macules, tongue fur white, slimy, putrid smelling and dry, pulse sunken, fine and without strength. She was diagnosed with blood stasis, thermo-toxins internally occupying the stomach, spleen and stomach yang qi greatly damaged. However there was one section of stomach qi which had a degree of vitality. Therefore, the therapy originally was to first protect the stomach qi, then gently restrain the cancer with: Su Agastache rugosa [ wrinkled giant hyssop], 10g., green tangerine peel, 6g., Citron medica, 10g., betel nut and skin each 6g., roasted radish seed,6g., chicken gizzard’s internal lining, 6g., pinellia rhizome, 10g., fried atractylodes rhizome, each 6g., magnolia bark, 6g., cardamon, round cardamon fruit, each 3g., [posteroinferior]. An additional recipe for emergency conso-return yang soup was included with: prepared daughter [accessory] root of Szechuan aconite, 6g., red root [ginseng root] 6g., American ginseng root, 6g., cordyceps, 6g., saffron from Tibet, 6g., snow lotus, 6g. Concentrated simmer in water for 60 minutes, then repeated dripping the liquid under the tongue. After continuing for one week, the patient felt stronger mentally, and began to increase the quantity of the liquid diet with the strength of the body comparatively improved. After one month, although the patient was still on a liquid diet, the food intake had clearly increased, the most difficult problem being an inability to stop Western pain medication. The soup prescription then changed to conso-yang supplement soup to change and adjust accordingly: Aerial parts of epimedium, 10g., fleshy stem of cynomorium, 6g., fenugreek seed, 6g., dried ginger rhizome, 6g., atractylodes [white] rhizome, 10g., sclerotium of tuckahoe, 10g., pinellia rhizome, 10g., Chinese yam, 10g. Then raw, sundried white ginseng root, 6g., American ginseng root, 6g., prepared daughter [accessory] root of Szechuan aconite, 6g. was added. First boil for 30 minutes, add in water and boil another 30 minutes, then the addition of: Tangerine peel, 10g., young fennel,6g., and boil again for 10 minutes. Each day take all the decoction divided into 6 doses. In addition, a prescription for conso-analgesic soup: Vinegar corydalis rhizome, 6g., stir-fried Sichuan pagoda tree fruit, 10g., roasted ci wei pi, 6g., stir-fried jiu xiang chong, 6g., scorched Ganoderma lucidum, 6g., raw cattail pollen, 6g., stir-fried flying squirrel feces, 6g. Grind all together into a fine powder and reserve part of it to take orally. Each time take 3 grams, 6 times a day. To the remaining portion add ice shavings, 6g., alum, 6g., each time taking out 6 grams to use with vaseline mixed into a paste. Spread evenly on sterile gauze, place on the stomach area, then use a hot water bottle to press down the heat. This method is also very effective for other types of pain. After 3 months, the patient completely stopped using Western pain medicine and began to take Conso-#1, #304, and each week taking 3 doses of soup medicine. The therapy has been maintained for 5 years. In 2001, at a follow-up visit, she was able to eat semi-liquid diet and was already able to perform medical document editorial work every day for half a day. The illness condition basically stabilized.

Dear Reader, to go one step further, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat #96

Intestinal Cancer is Divided into Dampness, Stagnation and Vacuity

Prostate Cancer’s Responsibility Lies with the Kidney

In the last chapter, we discussed the question of stomach cancer and in this chapter we will move on to intestinal cancer and prostate cancer.

Intestinal cancer: also called carcinoma of the large intestine, includes carcinoma of colon and anorectal cancer. Occurrence is highest among those 30-50 years old with a 2:1 ratio of men to women. Usually in the high occurrence age range, bowel habits change with: Many bowel movements, stool carrying blood and mucus, thin stool, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation, both of which alternate. The anus is weighed down with pain, rectal tenesmus, and stool feels like it is weighed down with swelling. At the same time the whole body lacks energy and for no apparent reason there is weight loss, the body becoming thin and anemic. While trying to eliminate chronic enteritis, ulcers and other acute illnesses, yet undergoing therapy does not see effective results. In this case, it is necessary to be on high alert for the possibility of intestinal cancer. In diagnosing intestinal cancer, in general anorectal digital examination, fibro-colonoscope and biopsy, x-ray, B-chao, CT, etc are selected. Western medicine’s first therapy is surgery followed by surgery with radiation, chemo-therapy and immune therapy. As for the question of cause of disease, it is considered to be related to intestinal enteritis, intestinal polyps and adenoma. In addition, ingesting high animal fat, high protein, low fiber food over a long period of time can easily produce intestinal cancer.

Chinese medicinal herbs used for intestinal cancer can be coordinated with pre-surgery and post surgery as well as before, during and after radiation therapy to regulate the body constitution, reducing and eliminating side-effects or conditions of discomfort from surgery, radiation or chemo-therapy. Conso-anti-cancer theory divides intestinal cancer into three categories in the discussion of cure: Damp-heat, stasis and vacuous harm. Symptoms from damp-heat type intestinal cancer which are commonly seen are; Occurrence of abdominal pain, stool which has red and white pus and blood, rectal tenesmus, nausea with torpid intake, tongue character: Fat and large with a red color, tongue fur: Yellow and slimy, pulse: Slippery and rapid. Stagnation type intestinal cancer shows symptoms of: Abdominal bloating with sharp pain, abdominal tumor which is hard and unmovable, stool which is purple-black with pus and blood, rectal tenesmus, tongue nature dark purple or has ecchymosis, putrid tongue fur, pulse is string-like and rough.

Vacuous damage type intestinal cancer for those inclined toward yang vacuity show symptoms of: Continuous abdominal pain, relief from pressing and from warmth, diarrhea at dawn, fear of cold limbs, fear of soiling oneself repeated loss of control, proctoptosis tenesmus, shortness of breath with no strength, face color withered yellow or ashen white, tongue pale, fat, with teeth marks, tongue fur white and slippery, pulse sunken and fine, without strength.

Those inclined toward yin vacuity, show symptoms of: Abdominal area with burning pain, constipated stool and bound, body shape emaciated, the 5 hearts are vexed with heat, waist sore, night sweats, dizzy head , ringing ears, red tongue with little fur or none, pulse fine and rapid. The regulating principle is to target the cancer core pathology which is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implement dissipation of stasis and resolve toxins by using Conso-#1 and #308. The fundamentals here accord with the changes which emerge from pathological differences. Damp-heat type intestinal cancer clears out and disinhibits damp-heat and uses a combined prescription for conso-disinhibiting water soup and conso-resolving toxin soup to transform and adjust accordingly. Stasis type intestinal cancer regulates qi and quickens the blood and uses a combined prescription for conso-qi regulating soup and conso-blood quickening soup to transform and adjust accordingly. Vacuous injury type intestinal cancer for those inclined toward yang vacuity, uses a prescription for conso-yang supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly. For those inclined toward yin vacuity, prescription used is conso-yin supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly.

Medical case example: The patient, a 45 year old male, an engineer first diagnosed on May 9, 2001. Twenty years ago, as the intellectual youth got sent out to the countryside on the Chinese mainland, the patient had an acute attack of enteritis, went through through therapy and made a complete recovery, however every time he encounters a food product that is too cold, or seafood, or greasy foods, he has diarrhea. He came to the United States three years ago, often working late into the night and eating an unregulated diet. A month ago, because his stool continually showed blood, he went to the hospital for examination and he was diagnosed with rectal carcinoma [ undifferentiated cell carcinoma]. He was unwilling to undergo surgery or chemo-therapy because of over response which resulted in interrupted treatment. He examined all kinds of information and decided to give Chinese medicine one last try. When he came for diagnosis, the bloody stool had already been stopped by Western medicine treatment, however abdominal pain flared up and each morning he had diarrhea, fear of cold in his limbs, with the lower abdomen and anus both having the feeling of tenesmus, exhaustion, lack of strength and yet he ate with good appetite. His tongue was dark, tongue fur white and stained, pulse sunken and slippery. The diagnosis was categorized as blood stasis, thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the rectum, spleen and kidney with yang vacuity. The regulating principle is to dissipate the stasis, resolve the toxins, fortify the spleen, nourish the kidney. The prescription is as follows: Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #308, 3000 mg., divided into two doses morning and evening on an empty stomach. The prescription for yang supplement soup is: aerial parts of epimedium, 10g., fleshy stem of cynomorium, 6g., Japanese teasel root, 10g., fenugreek seed, 6g., fennel fruit, 3g., Chinese dodder seeds, 10g., psoralea, 6g., evodia fruit, 6g., nutmeg seeds, 6g., dried ginger, 6g., fried hyacinth bean, 30g. Boil in water and take in one day in divided doses morning and evening on an empty stomach. In addition, he was advised to use conso-moxibustion and conso-acupuncture therapy methods. Moreover, the patient needed help establishing new regulated dietary and rest patterns. From beginning to end, regulation continued for 2 years and all symptoms were under control and did not reoccur. The patient was able to return to work, and has continued to practice conso-life nurturing skills.

Prostate cancer: Prostate gland is one of the body of glands of the male reproductive system. It is located below the bladder, in front of the rectum, encircling the upper portion of the urethra. If the prostate is too large, urine flow can be reduced and slowed down even to the point of stoppage. Prostate depends on male hormone to function normally. Male hormone causes males to have masculine characteristics, moreover the primary male hormone is the testicular hormone, which is primarily produced by the testicle, and a small quantity produced by the adrenal gland. Prostate cancer is the second highest cancer occurrence in the U.S. and is close to occupying first place. Each year there are over a million new cases diagnosed in the U.S., and it is the second highest cause of cancer deaths among men. In the U.S., one out of every 10 men is in danger of contracting prostate cancer. The danger factors for prostate cancer are,Age: with a high rate for men over 55, accompanied by obesity which often accompanies prostate gland enlargement, family history of a father or brother with a history of prostate cancer. Ethnicity: Non-caucasians with prostate cancer seldom seen among Asians and Native Americans, Dietary habits: Those who like to eat a high fat animal diet have a higher incidence than those who like to eat fruits and vegetables. Early stage illness may not manifest symptoms, however prostate cancer can trigger the following symptoms: Frequent urination, especially at night, difficulty starting urination or back flow suppressing urination, urinating without strength or stopping intermittently, urinating with pain or burning, painful ejaculation, blood in urine or hemospermia, frequent lumbosacral, hip, and upper thigh areas have pain or stiffness. Diagnosis of prostate cancer requires implementation of digital examination of the rectum and other finger gloved secretion test examination and blood tests to examine the prostate-specific antigen, PSA, as well as cytoscope, B chao, CT and biopsy, etc.

Prostate cancer is divided into 4 stages: In the first stage, the rectal examination cannot detect it by hand, since the cancer had not yet spread beyond the prostate. In the second stage, tumor invades the prostate gland and even more tissue can be felt by hand passing through the rectum, however the cancer has not yet spread beyond the prostate. In the third stage, the cancer has already spread to adjoining tissue outside the prostate, and in the fourth stage, the cancer has already spread to the lymph nodes or the other parts of the body. Western medicine’s handling of prostate cancer is divided into: Monitoring, surgery, radiation and hormone therapy. Among them, monitoring is used in the early period, where there is slow development and advanced age or accompanied by other medical problems which make it impossible for the patient to endure surgery, radiation or hormone therapy. However, those who choose monitoring, risk possibly triggering the spread of cancer. Chinese medicine can be used in the early monitoring period toward prostate cancer, moreover it can accompany the stages of surgery, radiation, chemo-therapy and hormone therapy as well as the recuperative stage after Western therapy methods are completed. Chinese medicine considers that the kidney governs reproductive and urinary systems. Because of this, prostate pathological changes primarily pass through regulation of kidney function. The conso-therapy method principles consider that the essence of prostate cancer is blood stasis and thermo-toxins forcibly occupying the prostate, moreover developing three clinical types: Latency, stasis and vacuous harm. With latent form prostate cancer, the pathology is kidney qi which is dark and depleted, the internal qi and blood of the prostate gland have lost equilibrium, and over a period of time have injured internal part of the vessel network, resulting in blood which is dark and stagnant, gradually accumulating thermo-toxins. At this time, when the injury is relatively light, in general there are either no symptoms, or the only one seen is frequent evening urination and sometimes pain in the lumbosacral region, etc. The tongue is dark red, tongue fur is thin white or thin yellow, the root of the tongue fur is slightly greasy, kidney pulse is sunken. In stagnation type prostate cancer, those inclined towards damp-heat stagnation show symptoms of: Lower abdomen full of swelling or painful, urine coming out in droplets and is difficult to stop, or in small quantity, of short duration with red color, burning heat, tongue nature red, tongue fur yellow and slimy, pulse is slippery and rapid. Those inclined towards qi and blood stagnation show symptoms of: Lower abdomen full of swelling and pain, urination with piercing pain, coming out in droplets, sometimes blood in the urine, difficulty urinating to the point of blockage and unable to flow through, tongue nature: Dark purple with stasis macules, pulse is rough. Those with vacuous injury type prostate cancer with an inclination towards kidney yang vacuity show symptoms of: Lumbosacral pain, lower limbs fatigued and limp, urination comes out without strength, droplets come out with discomfort, fear of cold in the limbs, face color ashen white, tongue character pale and fat, tongue fur white and thick, pulse fine and weak. Those with an inclination toward kidney yin vacuity show symptoms of: Sore lumbus and limp thighs, urine quantity small and burning hot, five hearts are vexed with heat, night sweats, face color emitting red, tongue body is thin and small with red color, tongue fur is few or not there at all, pulse is fine and rapid.

The principle of applying conso-therapy is to target the core pathology of blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implementing dissipation of stasis and resolving toxins. The prescription used is: Conso-#1, 3000 mg., #305, 3000 mg., divided into two doses to be taken morning and evening on an empty stomach. At the same time, for the latent type, in general it is not necessary to use soup medicine doses, however if there are obvious symptoms, conso-yang supplement soup can be used to transform and adjust accordingly. With the stasis type, this is categorized as damp-heat and uses conso-water disinhibiting water soup to transform and adjust accordingly. This is categorized as blood stasis and uses conso-qi regulating soup and conso-blood quickening soup to transform and adjust accordingly. For the vacuous harm type, this is categorized as kidney yang vacuity, and uses conso-yang supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly. Kidney yin vacuity uses conso-yin supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly.

Bladder Cancer and Kidney Cancer

Acute and Chronic Blood Cancer and Cervical Cancer

In the last chapter, we discussed intestinal cancer and prostate cancer. This chapter will continue with a brief look at abdominal area cancers types such as bladder and kidney cancers, then we will move on to acute and chronic leukemia and cervical cancer, etc. Due to space limitations, we will not be looking at medical examples in the remaining chapters in the book.

Bladder cancer: Bladder cancer for the most part occurs in older people, and on average occurrence is in people over 55 years old, in men 4 times greater than that in women. The primary symptoms are blood in the urine without pain or accompanied by frequent urination, urgency to urinate or painful urination. The reason for occurrence is related to chemical carcinogens, endogenous tryptophan metabolic abnormalities, smoking, pathogens, etc. Diagnosis of bladder cancer can involve cystoscope, cystography, urine exfoliated cells, B chao, CT examination, etc. For a patient in the early stages, Western medicine will implement electric cauterization or surgery to remove it. If surgery is not possible, radiation and chemotherapy, etc. are used. Conso-anti-cancer theory divides bladder cancer into vacuous-harm type and stasis-stagnation type. With the vacuous-harm type, the spleen and kidneys are injured, with the emergence of painless, bloody urine, inhibited excretion of urine, non-stop dribbles, lower abdomen dropping down with swelling, anemic and emaciated, dizzy, short of breath, thin and sloppy stool, face color without luster, tongue character pale and fat with teeth marks, tongue fur white and slippery, and pulse which is sunken and fine.

The static-stagnation type is damp and hot with qi and blood and other pathological material building up triggering blood in the urine, urgency to urinate, painful urination, lumbus sore and painful, lower limbs floating and swollen, repressed and depressed spirit, both flanks full of swelling, belching air, sighing breaths, tongue nature is red and dark, tongue fur yellow and slimy, pulse string-like and slippery. The main regulating method, is to target the general character of the cancer pathology of blood stasis and thermo-toxins, selecting the dissipation of stasis and resolution of thermo-toxins using Conso-#1, #305, each at 3000 mg. divided into two doses morning and evening on an empty stomach. At the same time, for the vacuous-harm type, fortify the spleen and nourish the kidneys, fortify qi and nourish the blood with a prescription using conso-yang supplement soup and conso-blood supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly. For the static-stagnation type, clear out and disinhibit damp-heat, regulate qi, quicken the blood, using conso-disinhibiting water soup, conso-regulating qi soup and conso-blood quickening soup to transform and adjust accordingly. It is also appropriate to utilize other conso-therapy methods.

Kidney Cancer: Kidney cancer often occurs on one side in one of the kidney organs, most often on the right kidney’s uppermost point, on the exterior side. In the early stages, there are commonly no symptoms, in the late stages, the 3 major symptoms are: Bloody urine, sore lumbus, tumor in lumbo-abdominal area. The reason for occurrence can possibly be related to: Long term exposure and irritation from carcinogenic substances, smoking, long term use of analgesics and antipyretic medicines and phenacetins and other factors. Diagnosis of kidney cancer can involve X-ray, pyelography, cytoscopic examination, renal arteriography, B chao, CT, etc. Western medicine’s choice of treatment method uses surgery, radiation and chemotherapy and other synthesized therapies. Conso-anti-cancer theory divides kidney cancer into static-stagnation type and vacuous-injury type. The static-stagnation type is damp, hot, with qi and blood mutually bound up in contention, developing into tumor, with symptoms seen as: Lumbo-abdominal area swollen with pain which may be intense due to possibly touching a tumor, non-stop bloody urine or urine in short spurts and red, tongue nature dark red or with green purple static macules, tongue body fat and tender, tongue fur yellow and slimy or interspersed with white, pulse: Slippery, rapid, string-like and rough. In the vacuous-harm type, the liver and kidney yin are vacuous or the spleen and kidney qi are vacuous. With liver and kidney vacuous yin, symptoms seen are: Lumbo-abdominal area pain possibly touching tumor, bloody urine, urine in small amounts or frequent urination, dry mouth, parched lips, thirsty to drink and constipated, swallowing pain, night sweats, tongue red with little fur, pulse fine and rapid. With spleen and kidney yang vacuity, lumbo-abdominal tumor is seen with occurrence of: Constant vague pain, upper leg relatively weak, lessened qi, soft spoken words, fear of cold in limbs, urine which is clear and long or urination and is hard to pass, non-stop dribbles, occasionally interspersion of bloody urine, tongue nature: Pale, fat, with teeth marks, pulse sunken and weak. The main regulating method is to seize the core of the cancer’s blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implement dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins with a prescription using Conso-#1 and #310 each 3000 mg., divided into 2 doses morning and evening to be taken on an empty stomach. Then based on the confirmed type, the stasis-stagnation type uses conso-disinhibiting water soup and conso-resolving toxin soup to transform and adjust accordingly. The vacuous-injured type, with liver and kidney yin vacuity, uses conso-yin supplement soup. Spleen kidney yang vacuity uses conso-yang supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly.

Number Four: Blood cancer types:

1. Acute leukemia: Acute leukemia, commonly called leukocythemia or blood cancer, ranks first in child malignancy tumors. It’s special characteristic is quick onset, quick development, fever which is difficult to bring down, spontaneous perspiration, night sweats, body pain and bone pain, anemia, bleeding, swollen liver and spleen, swollen lymph nodes. Occurrence may be related to ionized radiation, chemical matter irritants, hereditary factors, pathogen contamination, etc. Acute leukemia is a general designation and can be divided into many types. Often seen are acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, low proliferative acute leukemia, etc. At the time of diagnosis, laboratory tests are the standard, with white cells divided into types, with over 90% juvenile cells. White cells always have a large increase in quantity or show some increase. There are also normal or reduced conditions, with red blood cells and platelets showing obvious reduction. Western medicine’s combined chemotherapy has been effective in bringing a comparatively large number of patients to the point of recuperation. Chinese medicine’s dominance in dealing with this illness is primarily the reduction and elimination of side effects from chemotherapy as well as regulating the body’s constitution after the illness is over and to speed up recovery.

Using conso-anti-cancer theory, acute leukemia is divided into replete-hot and vacuous-hot types. The replete-hot form shows symptoms of fever, thirst, constipation, red colored urine, and is often accompanied by bloody nose even to the point of bloody stool and bloody urine, red tongue with yellow fur, pulse fine and rapid. With the vacuous-hot type, the skin is steaming hot, palm of hands and feet are hot, damp heat, night sweats, skin, nose and teeth all bleed, vexed heart, sleeplessness, dizziness, blurry vision, exhausted spirit, devitalized appetite, tongue nature red or pale red, tongue body thin and small, tongue fur few or thin yellow, pulse: Fine and rapid or fine and weak. The main regulating method is based on the core pathology of cancer which is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implementing dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins. The prescription uses Conso-#1, 500 mg., # 311, 500 mg.,divided into morning and evening doses before meals or taken ground into powder. At the same time, targeting the replete-heat type by using conso-resolving toxin soup to transform and adjust accordingly. For the vacuous heat type, use of conso-yin supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly.

2.  Chronic leukemia: Chronic leukemia is granulocytes or lymph cells which undergo diffuse proliferation or infiltration to all tissues in the body. Many occurrences are seen in middle aged people, seldom in those under 25 years old. A special characteristic is the slow and gradual onset of the illness and the long progression of the illness. Chronic granulocyte type leukemia primarily has symptoms of spleen swelling and enlargement. Chronic lymph cell type leukemia primarily has symptoms of symmetrical lymph node swelling. From diagnosis, the blood appearance in the laboratory shows slow grain for the most part as neutral band-form cells and a small quantity of metamyelocyte cells, early erythroblast, myelocyte, with small quantity of primary cells and acidophil and alkalophilic granulocytes increasing by a large amount. Slow lymph for the most part are lymph cells, red blood cells and platelets are reduced, blood sedimentation clearly at increased speed. In addition, there is also the analysis of bone marrow appearance, tissue chemistry and biological analysis, lymph node aspiration biopsy, chromosome examination and other methods. Western medicine takes chemotherapy as the main treatment method for this illness. Chinese medicine can coordinate with chemotherapy to protect the body constitution, increase therapeutic efficacy as well as recuperation after illness.

In the conso-anti-cancer system, chronic leukemia is divided into hypochondriac lump type and vacuous injured type, implementing the identification of evidence to target cure.

The hypochondriac lump type sees symptoms of: Right flank and lower spleen swelling, swelling full and painful or accompanied by swelling of neck and axillary lymph nodes, throat swelling and pain, bloody nose and teeth, low fever and fatigue. In women, menorrheal menses or amenia, tongue nature: Red-purple or having maculae caeruleae, tongue fur white and thick, pulse string-like and slippery.

The vacuous injured type sees symptoms of: Spleen swelling and enlargement, or swelling and enlargement of the neck and axillary lymph nodes, torpid intake and lack of strength, shortness of breath, soft spoken words, dizziness and blurry vision, face color yellow and white, finger and toe nail color withered and white, insomnia with multiple dreams, low fever and night sweats, tongue pale red, tongue fur thin yellow or with scant fur, pulse fine and weak or slightly rapid. The main regulating method is to target the core of cancer pathology which is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, by employing the dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins by using Conso-#1, #311 each 3000 mg., divided into morning and evening doses before meals. At the same time, according to the differentiated proof of diagnosis, the hypochondriac lump type, uses conso-blood quickening soup to transform and adjust accordingly. The vacuous injured type uses conso-qi supplement soup and conso-yin supplement soup in a joint prescription to transform and adjust accordingly. Especially worth noting is the ancient Chinese medicinal formula: soft shell turtle shell boiled tablet which is extremely effective in treating spleen swelling and enlargement. However, because the formula has 23 different herbs, many of them medicinal insect types which in modern times are very difficult to find, therefore there are no longer any pharmacies producing them. However, based on the combined prescription theory of this medicine, we should be able to implement changes to manage this.

Number Five: Female cancer types: In talking about female cancers, breast cancer is ranked as number one, and this was already discussed in chapter 2 on chest and hypochondrium area cancers. This chapter will place emphasis on a discussion of female cancers in a single organ, uterine and ovarian cancer. 1. Cervical cancer: cervical cancer is the cancer of the uterine cervix. For those over thirty years old, occurrence ratio rises following the advancement of age, until reaching its peak at ages 55-65. From outward appearance, cervical cancer has 4 types; cauliflower type [ nipple form] , ulcerated type, diffuse infiltrated type and segmented node type. Looking at the pathology, the great majority are squamous cells, with adenocarcinoma and mixed cancers relatively few.

Dear Reader, if you’d like to take another step in gaining more information, please read on to the analysis in the next chapter.

Chat # 98

Ovarian Cancer and Bone Tumor Cancer

Lymph Cancer and Skin Cancer

In the last chapter, we discussed bladder cancer, kidney cancer, acute and chronic leukemia, moreover began to examine cervical cancer. This chapter will continue to look at cervical cancer and ovarian cancer, then move on to bone tumor cancer, skin cancer and lymphosarcoma. From the next chapter, #99, we will gather together answers to some of your most pressing problems.

Looking at the reasons for illness, cervical cancer is related to early marriage and early pregnancy, many births, cervical erosion, laceration of the cervix, excessively frequent sexual relations, smegma, as well as psychological factors: Specifically, feelings related to anger, depression and grief causing imbalance over a long period of time. Diagnosis requires implementation of cervial secretion smear examination, vaginoscope, and colpomicroscope examination, biopsy, B chao, CT, etc. Western medicine treatment for the most part utilizes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy as well as cold therapy, heat therapy, and laser, etc.

Looking at the application of conso-therapy methods, for cervical cancer it primarily implements regulation of the body constitution before, during and after Western treatment methods, moving the qi and blood, especially after treatment is over in order to prevent recurrence. First is to target the core of cancer pathology, which is blood stasis and thermo-toxins, implement the dissipation to stasis and resolution of toxins using Conso-#1, #309, each at 3000 mg., divided into two doses every day morning and evening on an empty stomach. In the early stages, cervical cancer for the most part does not have symptoms. In the middle and late stages the patient may have four major symptoms. These consist of: Bleeding in the vaginal canal beginning with sexual relations or after an examination, oftentimes a small quantity which stops by itself. After this, there is the possibility of bleeding in between menstrual periods or bleeding in small quantities after menopause on an irregular basis. In the late stage, bleeding is comparatively more profuse. A vaginal discharge: Leukorrhea greatly increased, with serosity, like rice water or water that meat was rinsed in, possibly having a foul smell. Pain: lumbo-sacral portion in continuous pain, lower limbs with shooting pain. Constipation: in the late stage the tumor presses or invades the rectum, making defecation difficult, rectal tenesmus, sticky liquid and bloody stool. In addition there is pressure or encroachment on the bladder which can trigger frequent urination, painful urination and bloody urination. In the late period, anemia may be seen, emaciation, fever, etc.

In targeting these symptoms, the conso-therapy method discriminates and divides into types which are; qi stagnation type: Concurrently seen are chest and flank filled with swelling, depressed spirit, sighing in despair, tongue dark red, tongue fur thin and white, pulse string-like. This is to be coordinated with conso-qi regulating soup. Blood toxin type: Concurrently seen are tongue nature dark purple or with stasis macules, tongue fur: Yellow, slimy with a thick root, pulse slippery and rapid. This is to be coordinated with use of conso-toxin resolving soup. Blood vacuity type: Concurrently seen are insomnia and multiple dreams, face color yellow-white, finger and toe nails pale white with multiple wrinkles, tongue nature pale red, tongue fur thin and white, pulse fine. If there is yin vacuity, then the five hearts are vexed with heat, mouth is dry and there are night sweats. If there is yang vacuity, then the spirit is exhausted, the four limbs are cold, intake is reduced, stool is sloppy. Consider coordinating this with conso-blood supplement soup, conso-yin supplement soup and conso-yang supplement soup.

Ovarian cancer: ovarian cancer can occur at any age, with most cases occurring in women between 20-50 years old. The pathological types seen often are: Sticky liquid type cystadenocarcinoma, serous cystadenoma, granulosa cell carcinoma, malignant teratoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, etc. The sticky liquid type cystadenocarcinoma canceration has a rate as high as 50%. These are all conditions which histology considers benign and yet clinically showing malignancy [ by diffusion or metastasis]. The reasons for illness can be related to environment, life conditions and nutritional factors. Diagnosis methods are gynecological diagnosis, X-ray, B-chao, CT, abdominoscope, cytology, etc. Western treatment takes surgical resection as the main thrust, in some cases where resection cannot be done, then radiation or chemotherapy are used. The early stages are without symptoms, only when the tumor has grown large can one lay a hand on the lower abdomen area where the tumor is, usually on bilateral sides. It’s nature may be hard or unevenly soft and hard, with a high or low uneven surface. When pushed it can be moveable or have restricted movement. It may be painful and also may produce all kinds of pressure symptoms. Ovarian cancer has a tendency toward intra-abdominal implantation with the symptom of ascitic fluid. According to the conso-therapy method divisions, the above-mentioned symptoms are the foundation, concurrently seen are: Chest and flank full of swelling, repressed and depressed spirit, string-like pulse. As for the qi stagnation type, use the conso-qi regulating soup; concurrently seen are; Sharp abdominal pain which may worsen at night, face color which is dark and black, tongue nature which is green-purple with stasis macules, pulse which is rough. As for the stasis- stagnation type, use the conso-blood quickening soup, concurrently seen are: Oppressive thoracic cavity glomus, exhausted body lacking energy, fearful of cold in the extremities, lumbus and knee soreness and weakness, or ascitic fluid, tongue pale and fat, tongue fur white and slimy, pulse slippery. As for the damp-stagnation type, use conso-water inhibiting soup and conso-yang supplement soup. Concurrently seen are: Face color that is tidal red, the five hearts vexed and hot, mouth dry, night sweats, constipation and red urine, tongue that is red with little fur, pulse that is fine and rapid. As for the yin vacuity type, use conso-yin supplement soup. At the same time, target the problem of blood stasis and thermo-toxins which are the core of cancer pathology, and equal for all types select the dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins using: Conso-#1, and # 309 each at 3000 mg., to be divided into two doses morning and evening before meals.

6.  Skeletal cancer types, lymph cancer types, body surface cancer types: 1. Skeletal cancer type: bone tumors are divided into primary type and metastatic types. In the former type, the system points to occurrence in the bone and adjoining tissue tumor. There are benign and malignant types. With the latter type, the system comes from the mammary gland, thyroid gland, lung, kidney, prostate, and other places which have cancer. All are categorized as malignancies. From the point of view of pathology, bone tumor primarily has osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, many occurrences of myeloma, chordoma, reticulosarcoma, etc. Reasons for illness can possibly be related to congenital, surviving embryonic cells that have turned into tumor, a developmental anomaly, genetic factors, chemical carcinogenic substances, ionized radiation, viral infection, etc. Diagnosis involves X-ray, CT, radionuclide, pathological biopsy, etc. Western medicine treatment takes surgery as the primary course of action, moreover makes appropriate use of radiation and chemotherapy, etc. Conso-therapy divides bone tumor into two types; bone heat type and toxic cold type. The bone heat type sees symptoms of: Pathologic change in the bone with burning and piercing pain, localized skin dark and purple with stasis redness. The injured area has restricted movement, the course of illness is relatively short, developing quickly, accompanied by fever, constipation or anemia, emaciation, dry mouth and thirst, tongue nature red and dark, tongue fur: Thin, yellow, dry or with very little fur, pulse: Slippery and rapid or fine and rapid. Use conso-toxin resolving soup to change and adjust accordingly. The bone cold type sees symptoms where the injured bone acid pain is dull, and encountering cold intensifies it or may be painless. The localized skin color is dull black or unchanged, the illness process is relatively long, developing slowly, accompanied by fear of cold in the limbs, torpid intake, sloppy stool, tongue pale and dark, tongue fur white and slippery, pulse sunken and slow. Use conso-yang supplement soup to transform and adjust accordingly. At the same time, diagnosis of blood stasis and thermo-toxins of cancer pathology is exactly the same, using dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins with Conso-#1 312-A, 312-B, each 3000 mg., divided into two doses to be taken morning and evening before meals. In addition, based on the Chinese medicinal theory of kidney rules the bone, throughout the entire process attention must be paid to regulating kidney function. Moreover, this can be combined with conso-ointment application therapy method, etc.

2. Lymph type cancers: Lymph cancer is malignant lymphoma. The primary site is lymph nodes and lymph tissue primarily including the two main types: Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s disease. A high degree of occurrence are seen in the neck, pars frontalis sulci cinguli, suboccipitofrontal , subaxillary, groin, intra-peritoneal, mediastinum and other areas. The reason for illness may possibly be related to: Virus, immunologic function damage or deficiency, long term chronic infection, long term irritation from certain physical chemistry matter as well as other causes. Diagnosis primarily depends on lymph node biopsy examination, blood and spinal cord smears, X-ray, CT, serum alkaline phosphatase, radionuclide, etc. Western medicine treatment is primarily chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Conso-therapy method divides lymph cancer into two types;, cold phlegm type and hot phlegm type. The two types share characteristics of: Lymph swelling at different sites which are hard and painful when pressed, uneven concave and convex surface, poor degree of movement. With the cold phlegm type, concurrently seen is: Localized dull pain, encountering cold increases severity or may be painless, chest distress and cavity glomus, swollen flank, sloppy stool, slimy mouth with torpid intake, shortness of breath, lack of strength, fearing cold in the limbs, pale and fat tongue with teeth marks, tongue fur white and slimy, pulse sunken and slippery. Use conso-disinhibiting water soup to transform and adjust accordingly. With the hot phlegm type, concurrently seen are: Localized burning heat pain, red urine and constipated stool, damp heat, night sweats, five hearts vexed and hot, face red and emaciated, tongue red and thin, tongue fur yellow and dry, pulse: Slippery and rapid or fine and rapid. Use conso-toxin resolving soup to transform and adjust accordingly. At the same time, based on the blood stasis and thermo toxins of cancer’s common pathology, select dissipation of stasis and resolution of toxins using Conso-#1, #312 each at 3000 mg., divided into two doses to be taken morning and evening. Conso-applied ointment method is also very appropriate to be used often.

Body surface cancer types [ skin cancer]. Skin cancer primarily occurs at 50-60 years old, with occurrences in Australia having the highest rate in the world. The pathology is divided into basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma easily occurs on the eye, nose, nasolabial groove, cheek area. Squamous cell carcinoma easily occurs at the temple, eyelid, ear, scalp and other areas. The cause of illness may be related to skin disease [ such as xeroderma, keloid, intractable ulcer], and physiochemical irritation [ such as sunlight, ultraviolet rays, X-ray, kerosene, etc.] Diagnosis requires doing pathological examination. Western medical treatment is primarily surgery and radiation. Conso-therapy method divides skin cancer into three types; hot toxin type, damp toxin type and dry toxin type. Aside from localized skin appearing swollen and broken, it may be from ulceration, leishmaniasis, or induration, etc. The thermo toxin type has localized area with intense burning heat and red swelling, vexed heat and sore throat, red urine, constipated stool, red tongue, tongue fur yellow, pulse slippery and rapid. Use conso-toxin resolving soup to transform and adjust accordingly. The damp toxic type has many localized places of flowing pus with putrid smell, heaviness of body, sleepiness, abundant phlegm and sloppy stool, tongue pale and tongue fur white and slimy, pulse sunken and slippery. Use conso-disinhibiting water soup. For the dry toxin types, localized areas extremely dry with scabby crumbs, skin dried out, mouth dry and stool dry, tongue red with tongue fur yellow with dried cracks and many wrinkles, fine pulse. Use conso-yin supplement soup. In addition, target the common pathology of cancer’s blood stasis and thermo toxins by selecting Conso-#1, #317, each at 3000 mg., divided into two doses to be taken morning and evening before meals. At the same time, there is special need to use conso-ointment method applied for external use.

Chinese Medicine’s Fight Against Cancer has its Superiority

Conso-therapy Methods have Outstanding Characteristics

In the last chapter, we concluded our discussion of commonly seen cancer types and the question of application of conso-therapy methods. This chapter and the following will take accumulated problems of common concern and answer them collectively from the serial publication in Jin Shan Shi Bao.

Question: I am a cancer survivor. Having been introduced to reading material by family and friends on traditional Chinese herbal medicine, I have developed an interest in its anti-cancer methods. However, my Western doctor considers Chinese medicine to be ineffective and opposes my use of it. What do you think I should do?

Answer: This problem crops up almost every day from my patients. At present, many Western doctors lack an understanding of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, even to the point of maintaining an opposition to it. This is normal. It wasn’t until the 1970’s, with President Nixon’s visit to China, that acupuncture science was introduced to the United States. Actually, Chinese medicine only has a 30 year history in the United States. This cannot possibly be placed on a par with the over 3000 year history of its development in China. However more and more Americans, including some Western doctors, have begun to understand and accept Chinese medicinal science. I recommend that you gather some information, particularly taking this book, One Hundred Chats on Chinese Medicine Fighting Cancer and introduce it to your Western doctor for discussion. I believe that after they develop a definitive understanding of it, their point of view may change. If it is possible, I would also be happy to communicate with your doctor and establish direct contact.

Question: Western medicine has surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other treatment methods, and even though they may not necessarily be able to reach effective results, yet the treatment goals are very clear. In the case of Chinese medicine fighting against cancer, in the final analysis, what kind of role does it play in treatment? In other words, why should I use Chinese medicine treatment methods?

Answer: The so-called Western medicine methods are clearly defined and we can summarize them with the word: Removal, which is to say using external force to expel the cancerous tissue out of the body. The goal of Chinese medicinal treatment methods in fact can be summarized with two characters which mean: Regulation, which is to say taking body functions and using them to reduce cancerous tissue. Chinese medicine in the fight against cancer has two special features which Western medicine does not possess. The first is, passing from the whole to control a part, which is to say passing through the body in its entirety and utilizing every part of the organism in order to tackle the pathological changes in the tissue of a local site. The second is, regulating the entire body using essential methods such as: Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, nutritional therapy, etc., none of which create injury. Western medicine has removal with speed and decisive action, however at the same time there can be injury to normal tissue. The regulation done by Chinese medicine is slow and thorough, however, as for speedy eradication of cancerous tissue, its efficacy is insufficient. Therefore, the roles of Chinese and Western medicine in the fight against cancer can be summed up in the two words: Mutual supplementation, which involves mutual cooperation between Chinese and Western medicine, selecting the strong points and supplementing the shortcomings of each and in doing so, capturing the most benefit for the patient.

Question: In that case, which aspects of Western medicine can benefit Chinese medicine? Which aspects of Western medicine cannot replace Chinese medicine?

Answer: There are 4 beneficial aspects. The first is an understanding of nature of pathological change in a localized area, and to make a final determination if the localized pathological change is cancer. The second is controlling the stages of illness: The early, middle, late and final stages of cancer. The third is to determine the prognosis, which is to say that every type of cancer and every patient has its own prognosis. The fourth is to reduce localized pathological change as early as possible, which is to say the removal of the cancer in the early stage. These 4 aspects are urgently needed in Chinese medicine. There is only one aspect where Western medicine cannot replace Chinese medicine, that is Chinese medicine’s treatment methods.

Question: After having cancer, I saw a doctor of Chinese medicine and took some Chinese herbal medicine, but I didn’t seen any results, so I thought that Chinese medicine would not be helpful in dealing with my illness. What is your opinion on this?

Answer: On one occasion, I spoke with a person from a reputable cancer organization and she told me that her organization had previously invited two traditional Chinese doctors to lecture on Chinese medicine fighting cancer. The result was that level of the talks was disappointingly low and everyone felt dissatisfied, and because of this, the organization determined that Chinese medicine had little to offer and no longer were doctors of Chinese medicine invited. This is a very interesting phenomenon. One or two Chinese medicine practitioners were inadequate and all Chinese medical doctors were repudiated. One can say that among lawyers, there are those of a high standard and those of an ordinary level. Of Western doctors, there are also those of a high standard and other more ordinary ones. The same is true for Chinese medical practitioners, some hold a high standard, with a wealth of knowledge and experience, others may be quite ordinary. In your search for a doctor of Chinese medicine, what are you looking for? Have you considered background in education and practical experience? Have you thought about whether or not the doctor has clinical and research experience? I recommend that you first collect information on Chinese medicine, make several phone calls for an initial consultation, then select several doctors to consult face to face. This will help you find an appropriate doctor of Chinese medicine.

Question: After having cancer, a friend from the Chinese mainland sent me Ganoderma lucidum, others brought me: cordyceps, snow lotus, Ka te xiao, Tian xian ye, and another spoke of 851. From advertisements I saw even more products of Chinese herbal products for fighting cancer. Friends also introduced me to your conso-therapy treatment methods. I don’t know what is best and in the end, what is suitable for me?

Answer: With all the different types and kinds of anti-cancer Chinese herbal medicine products, there are more than you can count and for an amateur to make the selection is truly daunting. I suggest that you first make an inventory of the products that you want to inquire about, then try to go online and make phone calls to seek out the following information:1. Who exactly was the product inventor and what is his educational background? 2. Has this product been used in basic medical treatment, and does the inventor himself have clinical experience or has he been guided by clinical research? 3. In the case of medical advertisements, has the efficacy of the product been proven by patients who used only this product and not other products or methods, especially Western treatment methods? 4. Does the manufacturing center possess high standards and legitimacy?

Question: I don’t know if I have cancer. Is Chinese medicine able to diagnose me by taking pulse?

Answer: This is not possible. Although both in ancient and modern Chinese medicine there is much experience related to tongue appearance and pulse in diagnosing cancer, however for a definitive diagnosis of cancer, it is necessary to go through the laboratory, X-ray, CT and pathological biopsy, etc. However, taking pulse can make a comparatively good judgement for certain cancer signs; changes in body constitution, and the degree to which qi needs correction from injury, etc.

Question: May I ask what is the difference between conso-therapy and other anti-cancer Chinese medicine practices? What are its special characteristics?

Answer: Currently in China, the original site of Chinese medicine, the anti-cancer methods for the most part are limited to one single aspect, among them herbal medicine and soup decoctions. Moreover, many traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, take Western medicine treatment methods as the main thrust in fighting tumors, and Chinese medicine treatment methods as supplementary. The positive aspect of this is the combination of Western and Chinese medicine, but the shortcoming is putting Chinese medicine in a secondary position and limiting in depth research opportunities. In other words, the essence of Chinese herbal medicine has not yet reached full expression. Due to opposition, Chinese medicine doctors do not have the authority to implement any Western medical treatments in the United States, our only weapon is Chinese treatment methods. This kind of limitation makes it extremely difficult to implement an organic coordination with Western medical treatment. However, the positive result comes from a thorough testing of the fundamentals of Chinese medicine, forcing us to move ahead in making great improvements in the development of Chinese treatment methods. Although conso-therapy had its earliest beginnings in China, yet the true completion of the system actually occurred in the United States. Because of this, the greatest difference between conso-therapy methods and other traditional Chinese medicine in the fight against cancer, is in taking several thousand years of Chinese treatment methods and reconfiguring them into optimal combination. Moreover based on inventors in China and in the United States with twofold medical experience, standard scientific principles are used to advance creativity. It can be said that throughout the world, there has never been this kind of complete system of Chinese medicine in the fight against cancer and prevention of cancer.

Question: If a patient lives far away in another state, or even as far away as China, Japan or Malaysia, and has no way to come to your San Francisco Bay Area clinic, how can they enjoy the benefits of conso-therapy?

Answer: Conso-anti-cancer therapy methods include small scale consolidation and large scale consolidation. Small consolidation refers to Conso-#1 treatment method, conso-restorative health soup treatment method, as well as conso-applied ointment method, conso-dietary method, conso-heart treatment method and conso-acupressure life nurturing skill, etc. These all can be managed by the patient themselves or easily put into practice with the help of family and friends. Though we are here in the California, yet there are patients as far away as New York, Washington, Hawaii and other states. In addition, there are overseas patients in Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and all over China, etc. Of course, conso-therapy also requires one segment of care under the guidance of a medical doctor, that is the so-called large scale conso-therapy. As explained above, conso-therapy is a set of standards, specifications and scientific anti-cancer and preventive methods which have gone through 17 years of practical trial experience. It has already matured and is moving toward further expansion. Presently, we are in the process of planning group divisions by region, step by step ensuring quality and quantity in areas all across the United States and extending conso-therapy methods throughout the world. At present, it is not necessary to come to the San Francisco Bay Area to enjoy small scale conso-therapy methods. In the future, people in all locations will be able to enjoy large scale conso-therapy and have the complete service of all the conso-therapy treatment methods.

Question: May I ask how conso-therapy is used before, during and after surgery, radiation and chemotherapy? In addition, some people say that Chinese herbal medicine should not be used before radiation and chemotherapy and not until these treatments are finished. Is this correct?

Answer: The goal of using conso-therapy methods before surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy is thorough regulation of the body to raise the organism’s disease resistant power, and be able to face the battle of surgery and radiation with vigorous physical strength. There are 2 goals to be applied during radiation and chemotherapy. The first is to help reduce the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, and the second is to safeguard the body’s resistance and create an opportunity for rapid recuperation after radiation and chemotherapy. After surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, there are 3 goals in the application of conso-therapy: the first is to help repair damage and injury at localized sites created in the organism from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy; the second is to regulate the body, raising resistance to illness; the third is to prevent cancer cells in a latent state to metastasize and then germinate.

As for the second question, I believe that treatment during radiation and chemotherapy should be coordinated with conso-therapy treatment. If you think about it, since we already know that radiation and chemotherapy can bring different degrees of injury to the body, why not be on guard before it happens? As pointed out earlier, there are 3 concepts of prevention in this book; the first is prevent illness before it occurs, the second is make preventive changes after illness occurs, the third is prevent recurrence after illness. Therefore, during radiation and chemotherapy, adding a coordinated protocol with Chinese herbal medicine is precisely the concrete embodiment of illness prevention.

The science of Chinese Herbal Medicine Needs to be Sought After,

‘The road goes every which way,

It extends far and wide’

In the last chapter we took the fundamental questions raised of common interest from the publication series and offered answers and explanations. This chapter will also review some questions that everyone has concerning Chinese herbal medicine and provide answers. This is also the last chapter of the book.

Question: In boiling Chinese herbs, is it necessary to use a stoneware casserole? Is it acceptable to use ceramic, glass, aluminum or cast iron pots?

Answer: Boiling Chinese herbs requires use of a stoneware casserole pot, and it is also acceptable to use ceramic or glass pots but not aluminum or iron. Simply said, metal based vessels cannot be used in boiling Chinese herbs. Why is that? This is because there is tannic acid contained in many herbs, and when tannic acid encounters metal, chemical changes may occur, forming non-water dissolving tannate, thereby destroying the original live herbal activity, creating a sediment or producing a sticky membrane which possesses unhealthy matter and is an irritant to the human body. Likewise, Chinese herbs contain ingredients of organic acid types, when heated to 100 degrees C. in an aluminum vessel can produce a chemical reaction, releasing chemical compounds. If these chemical compounds are ingested by human beings, they can accumulate in the liver, kidney, brain, and other tissue, causing symptoms of joint pain and weakness, etc. from the drop in the blood serum level of inorganic phosphorous.

Question: I heard that if you prepare Chinese herbs incorrectly there can be ‘banded qi’, ‘banded flavor’. What exactly is this?

Answer: The so-called banded qi and banded flavor refers to boiling herbs in a vessel which contains a layer of previously cooked herbal remnants or other random things formed into a dry matter which was not washed away. While cooking another Chinese herb, the original accumulated matter then dissolves into the new herbal soup and interferes with the new formula. If the original accumulated matter contains toxic ingredients or the herbs have an antagonistic effect, the reaction will be even greater. Because of this, in a light case, the occurrence of banded qi and banded flavor, will affect the efficacy of the treatment, in a serious case will lead to a poisoning phenomenon. The method for prevention of banded qi and banded flavor is really very simple. Each time you cook herbs, thoroughly wash and air dry the vessel used for cooking.

Question Some people have told me that you shouldn’t rinse Chinese herbs before cooking them, that this may destroy the ingredients. Please clarify.

Answer: In general, Chinese herbs processed in the factory and during the time of storage, oftentimes use sulfur to steam fumigate in order to prevent live insects. Of course, nowadays non-sulfured herbs are promoted. However, from the production of pharmaceuticals and the culling method, there is yet no way reach complete uniformity, and therefore it is not possible to fully guarantee that there is no sulfur. In addition, while herbs are in storage, if they are not properly cared for, some of them can easily turn moldy. Therefore, if you boil Chinese herbs directly, sulfur and mold can adhere to them which can then enter the herbal soup. In a light case, this disturbs the nature of the herbs, in a serious case, there is danger to the body, even to the point of bringing up new health problems. Because of this, before cooking the herbs, one should use clear water to rinse them.

Question: Before cooking herbs, is it necessary to soak them? Would it be acceptable to use boiling water to cook them directly?

Answer: Before cooking herbs, first wash them in cool water, then use cool water to soak them for a minimum of 15 minutes, or for as long as several hours. After that, they can be placed directly on the stove for cooking. Please note that you cannot use boiling water to cook the herbs. The effective plant ingredient in the Chinese herb is generally spread out in a well distributed form in the plant cell. Following the gradual increase in water temperature, plant cells gradually expand and crack. The internal protein and starch and other matter gradually decompose and dissolve in water. The pharmaceutical matter has effective ingredients which successfully seeps out and comes apart. If there is direct use of boiling water, this easily causes the protein and starch and other matter in the cells to solidify, causing the cell to not easily break open and the effective ingredients are not able to become fully soluble.

Question: Nowadays, use of the: Mute Maid-Servant herb pot is very convenient, however I have also heard it said that it is not effective. Is this true?

Answer: Each side has its reasoning. First of all, we need to look at exactly how long the cooking time is. I have a patient who said that she doesn’t drink Chinese medicinal soup because as soon as she drinks it she gets an upset stomach and her throat gets abnormally dry and rough. After sorting out the issues, it turns out that originally every time she cooked her herbs, she cooked them all night long. Later on she changed to a cooking time of 30 minutes and quickly found the herbal soup to be suitable. In general, Chinese herbs for clearing heat and resolving the exterior use a high flame for 10-15 minutes and that is adequate. Other herbs are water boiled for 20-30 minutes using a high flame to a medium low one. If the herbal medicine exceeds more than 20 ingredients, then the cooking time should be extended by approximately 10 minutes. If the medicine is to enrich and supplement, such as ginseng, American ginseng root, etc. then a small flame should be used after reaching a boil, followed by a simmer for 40-60 minutes. Now returning to the question of the Mute Maid-Servant herb pot. With this type of pot, because boiling herb time and quantity of water must be placed in the pot at a set water level, and only then can it automatically keep warm, therefore, oftentimes extending the time duration relatively long. I recommend that unless you are cooking enriching and supplementing herbs, by all means use a traditional casserole pot which is even easier to control the herb cooking time and guarantee herb efficacy. At the same time, it will also make the herbal soup flavor more palatable.

I would like to mention that Chinese herbs containing volatile oils such as cinnamon, senna leaf, field mint, grains of paradise fruit, round cardamon fruit types, are used in small quantities, easily giving off flavor and therefore should be boiled for only 2-3 minutes. Alternatively, after finishing boiling the herbal liquid, while it is still hot, submerge the volatile oil herbs for 5-10 minutes and this will be adequate. Moreover, herbs such as: Gypsum, abalone shell, oyster shell, dragon bone, mother-of-pearl and other mineral Chinese herbs require prior cooking time of 10-15 minutes. Only with use of a casserole pot is it easy to control the cooking time.

Question: I’m very busy. Would it be acceptable to cook several days worth of Chinese herbal medicine, and then divide them into daily portions?

Answer: This is not a good idea. Chinese herbal soup prescriptions oftentimes are complex prescriptions with a system of many ingredients and among them every chemical ingredient can produce all kinds of chemical reactions and sediment. For example, tannic acid and bio-salt, protein, glycoside types, bio-salts and glycoside matter have organic acids, and after they mix, a sediment reaction can occur. Sometimes, it will cause the formation of a new compound difficult to dissolve in water, and separate out from the solution. The longer medicinal liquid sits, the greater the sediment reaction. The corresponding effective ingredient will be reduced and the efficacy of the pharmaceutical matter can be affected. Because of this, ideally the plan should be that the medicine should be consumed on the day it is cooked, and it is also acceptable to cook the medicine in the evening and take the second dose in the morning. In general, the space between cooking and consuming should not be more than 12 hours.

Question: I’ve heard it said that in taking Chinese medicines, there are many prohibitions. Could you briefly introduce them?

Answer: In taking Chinese medicine, there are some prohibitions, but not too many. In a word, there are 5 types of things to avoid. Firstly, avoid things with a fishy smell, such as fish, shrimp, and crab types, especially ocean water seafood. These items belong to the emit fishiness category and can cause an increase in intensity or penetration of swelling pain symptoms. Secondly, avoid hot natured meat types, such as: Chicken, lamb, goose meat, etc, which also belong to the emit heat items. Thirdly, avoid sticky natured things such as: Bamboo shoots, glutinous rice, fatty meats, etc. which all belong to slimy stagnated category. They can cause grease stagnation to the appetite and influence the development of medicinal efficacy. Fourthly, avoid raw and cold substances, in addition to cold salads, iced products like: Ice cream, popsicles, ice water, frozen ice, cold leftover dishes all belong to cold congealed types, and they can chill latent yang qi. Fifthly, avoid sugar types, things of sweet fullness which can lead to: Dampness and turbidity, central obstruction, indigestion. Especially avoid white sugar which not only lacks vitamins and minerals but moreover can consume the body’s vitamins and minerals and from this weaken the human body’s resistance to cancer, leading to a decrease in the engulfing capability of the white blood cells. We know that normal cells rely on oxygen to breathe and cancer cells exist primarily with reliance on glucolysis function. In the blood of patients with tumor, the lactic acid content is oftentimes in high quantity, and lactic acid is the product of glucolysis. Therefore in fact, even before taking Chinese herbal medicine, during surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, as well as during the period when there is cancer activity, these 5 types of substances should all be avoided.

Question: Chinese medicinal soup is very bitter. Would it acceptable for me to add fruit juice to reduce the bitter flavor or can I use fruit juice to follow after taking Chinese medicine?

Answer: This is not a good idea. The tartaric acid in fruit juice easily causes many different kinds of herbs to decompose or dissolve ahead of time, causing the efficacy of the herbs to be greatly reduced.

Question: Would it be acceptable to take Western and Chinese medicines at the same time?

Answer: Western medicines belong to the category of chemical compounds, whereas Chinese medicines belong to the category of original plants that have been processed. Both of them will produce a chemical reaction, though generally it is very minimal and is insufficient to create any health risk. Nevertheless, since now there are more and more different kinds of medicinal products, an organism’s drug resistance is stronger and stronger, so in order to avoid a physiochemical clash, in using Western medicine and Chinese medicine it would be best to have a time gap of at least 30 minutes.

Question: Some people say that taking Chinese medicine for a long period of time will lead to fatigue. Is that the case? How can cancer patients avoid this? In addition, is there drug tolerance or toxicity with Chinese medicine?

Answer: Most crucial is what Chinese medicine is being used. If the medicine addresses the medical problem, then not only will it not lead to fatigue but on the contrary, as the body improves, energy will be plentiful. If the medicine does not address the problem, then of course it will injure the body. In a light case, it will consume the body’s correct qi, resulting in fatigue. In a serious case, it will trigger other pathological changes. If cancer patients use Chinese herbs for a long period of time to overcome tumor, they necessarily consume the body’s correct qi, leading to fatigue and lack of strength. In that case, is there any way to avoid this situation? There certainly is, and it is use of conso-therapy methods.

In order to understand conso-therapy methods for cancer pathology, the first step is to recognize that tumor is: qi stagnation, blood stasis, water obstruction, thermo-toxins bound in mutual contention. The second step is to recognize that after the formation of tumor, it necessarily will consume the body’s: Qi, blood, yin and yang, leading to qi vacuity, blood vacuity, yin vacuity and yang vacuity. This is the so-called ‘four repletions’ and ‘four vacuities’. In treatment, conso-therapy emphasizes the elimination of the four repletions and supplementing the four vacuities. This is also referred to as supporting the correct and dispelling the wicked simultaneously. In this way, the body’s correct qi is vigorously protected.

As for whether or not Chinese herbal medicine has toxicity, I quote a Chinese folklore proverb: If it’s medicine, it’s three parts toxic. Toxicity or the production of side effects have 2 reasons; One, is that some Chinese herbal medicines are intrinsically toxic so that incorrect usage can produce a toxic reaction. Two, is if the medicine does not fit the illness, for example with symptoms of cold using cold inducing herbs, with symptoms of heat using heat inducing herbs, the result of will inevitably add frost to snow, and pour oil on fire.

Throughout this book, from beginning to end, I have thread through one concept; Chinese medicine is a scientific system of theories based on practice, with much valuable experience and knowledge behind it. It is extremely worthwhile to dig out, popularize it and glorify it. Conso-therapy strives to blend Chinese medicine into one body with the essence of other ethnic medicines throughout the world for health protection, cancer prevention and anti-cancer knowledge. In doing this, we can bring to cancer patients and many who have difficult to cure diseases, the utmost welcome news.

‘The road goes every which way,

It extends far and wide,

I search high and low to find it.’
